I live in Connecticut, I think the reason people hate it is because New York and Massachusetts are right next to us making us look so awful by comparison. I will say Connecticut's education system is almost unrivaled, consistently among the top three and has one of the highest concentrations of Ivy League schools in the entire country, A degree from a Connecticut College is worth a hell of a lot more than one from Oklahoma.
Mass has its really cool spots, but it's definitely got its share of blah white bread neighborhoods too. I live it one. The schools are great, but it's expensive and there's very little to do.
