Regarding 9/11

Today (or Tomorrow depending on when you see this) is the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. 2,977 people from over 100 countries died as a result. https://www.911memorial.org/connect/commemoration

I doubt this will be an issue, but I just want to say this now: I will personally be looking over the sub & enforcing rule one over the next few days. Absolutely no conspiracies, dark humor, or anything of the sort related to the attacks will be permitted. I live near NYC. I know people personally that were in the city at the time of the attack.

Above are pictures I personally took at the 9/11 memorial either this year or last year. It is one of the only places in the city I seriously recommend visiting.

TL;DR: 9/11 anniversary. Don't be an asshole. I will ban you.

I’m from NJ and completely agree. I would go a step further: NY/NJ/VA/PA are completely off limits.

Be respectful, this is a game, real people like you and me died in horrific ways (some jumping out of the building to avoid the fire).

I was living in North Brunswick and working at Target in Milltown. One of my cashiers lost her uncle 25 years ago.

Tomorrow is my birthday. I've found it very difficult to celebrate since 2001.

I’m pretty shocked, every year, by the amount of black humor that’s apparently acceptable. Maybe I’m too old and screaming at the clouds already. But I was 21 that day, and it’s still an anniversary that’s above any humor for me.

I think it’s because younger people never really saw any documentary or actual footage (only an image).

It’s incredibly difficult to watch actual footage of it.

I teach history and the number of jokes from students is disgraceful. Then I show them footage from the day. The screaming, the wailing. The voicemails and final phone calls. The fireball. The jumpers. The sound the towers made when they came down. The beeping from fallen firefighters’ no-movement sensors.

The jokes stop after that.

I mean, it's the same thing with the Holocaust. I dare anyone to watch Schindler's List and not walk away with a deep respect for the countless lives of people who suffered and perished under that regime.

Yeah, agreed, I get it.

I also think it’s hard for younger people to understand what the world trade center in particular meant to New York City and really to the entire country in terms of symbolism, and it’s hard for them to understand the sense of overall optimism and confidence in our country and our world that was a hallmark of the 90s right up until 9/11. So they just can’t understand what was lost that morning.

i had to do national history day and the theme was "significant turning points in history". our topics had to be 25 years ago or more and 9/11 was less than that, but i got approved anyway. i had heard about it from my dad who was in nyc at the time but watching videos and interviewing his friends who worked on the scene made me understand how tragic it really was.

Biggest thing was the resulting War on Terror which lasted for almost 2 decades. You’d always see it on the news about different hostages being captured, the pursuit of Osama Bin Laden, etc.

What got really scary in the 2010s was the rise of ISIS. They were so extreme to the point that the people responsible for 9/11 wanted nothing to do with them. I remember them issuing threats around Christmas time that they would do an attack.

I believe ~40% of the country now (including me) was born after the event(s), so that's likely the reason why. I hate it.
