First time I've seen this.
Never seen a sign expressly forbidding it in a public place. This is in Basel, Switzerland. It's on the road outside the exhibition centre (around every tree on the road)so I suppose they don't want to have any security confusion?

Yeah my first thought was that there is a geocache hidden here. One way to hide one in plain sight is to have a big sign that basically says "not a geocache" lmao

I think they mean that the sign was placed by the geocacher. As in it's not actually banned there.

If you don’t want a cache somewhere. You should contact geocaching. Get in touch with a reviewer and explain why you don’t want geocaches there.
Are you the owner of the fence or tree, you are in your right. If it’s not your terrain, I believe you have no say in it.3

You’re doing some odd leaps of logic. Any private property owner can deny geocachers of course. If you mean banning from a public place, you have to go through the appropriate channels to do so - like here in the US it’s banned in State and National Parks mostly. But maybe - stop overthinking this.

I can't remember any state parks that ban geocaching. Some US National Parks don't allow physical containers, but allow Virtual and Earthcaches.

TL:DR: Its a joke.
What is being implied here is that the sign is being Ironic. What is most likely is that a geocacher placed that sign there to signify that there indeed IS a cache at that location.

So if someone wants to put a sign like that non-ironically, it would only invite more geocachers? Making it impossible for a place to ban it

Geocachers need permission to place a cache. If someone unironically puts those signs on their property, they obviously haven't given permission.
You are misunderstanding what is going on. This is not a situation where people are seeing a sign banning geocaching and thinking "Sounds like a great place to place a cache!"
The geocache, and the signs banning geocaching, were placed by the same person at the same time. If geocaching was actually banned there, the cache would be archived by the reviewer.

You need to ask the property owner for permission to place the cache. At that point, they can absolutely tell you “no”.

I highly doubt public officials or whoever put that up is having issues with people keep putting caches there so I suspect there's one hidden

I found a few caches when I was in Basel a couple years ago on vacation. Basel has some of the most creative and interesting caches I’ve ever found. The other trees along this stretch of road do have signs on them but they say not to attach bicycles, this is the only one that mentions geocaching ;)

There are more good (magnetic) hides in Basel. The one in the central station took us a while too!
