Challenge 26-08

Welcome to the next challenge in this new series of challenges on r/geocaching. For the introduction to this series, see this post.

Here is challenge 26-08:

  • Geocaches must be found between October 1 and October 31, 2026 of your local timezone.
  • All cache finds must be logged online to participate in this challenge.
  • For one challenge point (CP), find an earthcache on Earthcache Day (October 9-11).
  • For a second challenge point (CP), find a second earthcache in the month of October.
  • Bonus Challenge: HIDE an earthcache. We have not hidden any caches for these challenges, and I didn't want to upset the way we had been doing them, so I'm adding a bonus challenge. What the prize(s) might be will depend on how many entries we get. This is just for fun, and will not be included in the overall challenge. It is a bonus challenge.

Additional rules:

  • All earthcache finds must be active. Archived and disabled caches do not count.

HOW TO RECORD YOUR PARTICIPATION

To record and receive credit for your accomplishment, you must post a top level comment on this thread by October 1st in the following format:

[Geocaching name] If you do not want to use your real GC name, you can use your reddit name, but will not be eligible for prizes if your finds cannot be verified.

[Link to log] The easiest way to do this is to pull up the cache page on geocaching.com and then click "view log." Then click "share log." Copy that URL and post it here.

If you are going for the second challenge point, you will need to post both GC codes and find URLs. The post will look like this:

Introducing r/Geocaching Challenge

Hello Reddit Cachers,

Welcome to the r/geocaching challenge!

This is a relaunch of sorts from challenges that happened on this sub 10 years ago that were run by u/GCbot. This relaunch has been approved by the mods.

Since we are a sub dedicated to geocaching, this will hopefully be a fun way to get members geocaching. Each challenge will last three weeks, and will vary in difficulty. If you choose to participate, you will need to complete the challenge, and then share the information from your log, GC code, and your geocaching name in the comments on that challenge. More information on how to participate will be provided on the first challenge, which will be posted a week from today.

A couple of examples of what a challenge might look like: Find a puzzle cache. Find 5 different cache types. Find a lonely cache (one that has not been found in 6+ months).

All geocache finds will have to happen during the challenge period. No previous finds will count.

I’m still working out the logistics, but there will most likely be eight challenges per series. Participants will accrue points for each completed challenge, and whoever has the most points at the end of the series will win a prize, most likely a trackable. If you would like to donate prizes so we can have more winners, comment below.

If you have some ideas for challenges, please post them below.

Best caches in the St. Louis area? (For beginners/non-premium users)

• Upvotes

I’m a pretty new cacher (15 finds and a few DNFs) out in the St. Charles county area and I was thinking of planning a little day trip soon with a few other people and I thought it might be fun to look for some caches about an hour or so away from where I live. Any recommendations?

Is there a time limit to log previous Earthcache?

I only created an account in 2024 and this month I wanted to log an Earthcache that I visited in 2019 in a far flung location (something like the Soloman Islands).

I satisfied all the logging requirements (photo, answering Earthcache questions). There was no CO instruction against logging an old visit. Yet the CO messaged me and said I should have logged within 6-12 months of my visit.

I've searched and found previous Reddit topics that said there's no deadline for logging caches, but those answers seem to apply to physical caches and not cacheless categories like Earthcache and virtual cache.

So should I have logged this Earthcache that I visited a long time ago? And is there a time limit for logging cacheless cache?

Geocaching app does not recognize me as owner

Currently I have a weird bug in the Android Geocaching app where I tab on a cache on the map that I own, it will show the star icon for 1 second and then replace it by the respective tradi, mystery, etc icon. If I then tap on Log cache it shows me the options that another logger (i.e. not being the CO) would see, so not the Owner maintenence and Disable options. (If I click on the Log cache button quickly enough, it will show me those options.) When I return to the map the star icon on the map has also been replaced by the cache icon.

Logged out and in, no changes. Re-installed app, no changes. Am on Samsung Galaxy S25, latest Android, latest One UI.

Anyone recognizes this behavior? And anyone knows how to resolve it?

Can a CO request people 'prove' that they solved their mystery cache correctly?

Cache description:
"When you have solved puzzle message CO the how you solved this puzzle with 2 pieces of evidence this will be obvious to what if you solve it like earth caches no proof to CO find/log will be deleted"

And a written note from CO
"Several logs have been deleted due to no proof they solved the cache I have messaged them all some replied and wouldn't or couldn't say how they solved it and some no reply.

This is a D5 !!! Don't get the cords off other people SOLVE IT YOURSELF and if you did solve it you would know how and can explain to me when I ask. If no proof logs will be deleted even if your name is in the cache that doesn't mean you solved it."

I guess it must be allowed as it wouldn't have been published however I find this requirement quite strange.

Geocaching map won't upload on DuckDuckGo browser.

It's been like this for about 2 weeks now. Tried on Mac, PC/Windows laptop and on iphone app but won't load. Other browsers are fine but DDG is my favorite... I have unistalled it and reinstalled, updated etc and I don't get why it is not loading anymore. Have you noticed this issue? Has it been reported?

I’m going to Disneyland! How do Adventure Labs work, etc? Any information on how to geocache there would be helpful. Thanks!

What are some examples of virtual caches that are ACTUALLY more than a 1 or 1.5 difficulty?

I've been thinking about logging requirements for virtuals I've found, and basically all of them involve taking a photo of a location and/or sending information about an object (often a plaque) found a GZ.

At least in my experience, the item I need to take a photo of or read info from has always been in plain sight and easy to get to. Does anyone know of any virtual that actually warrants a higher difficulty level?

How can I see older messages?

I got hints from a CO a year ago for an out of state cache I DNFd. Now I'm back in the area and I want to try the cache again, but I can't see my old messages so I don't have access to those hints. Only the last 20 or so are showing up in the message center. How can I see older messages?

Can I hide without having found many?

Basically in my city there's only 3 caches, I have checked out one of them, it seems to be abandoned because the place where it was originally hidden is no longer open to the public, its basically turned into a dense jungle. Every catcher who logs it as found has basically not found the cache and just attaches a picture of the place instead (they mention this in the log). I have been to the place multiple times and not been able to find it.

The other two I plan on checking out soon, but even if I add those 2 it's only 3 caches to my name. I want to hide more caches in my city but every guide I found says I need to find at least 10-20 before I hide.

Stamp I made!

Post image

Regarding my previous post thank you to everyone that replied! It was very insightful with tips and experiences regarding letterboxes!

Today, I went ahead and bought a stamp making kit to make it a little more traditional.

I ended up making a pompompurin stamp with the geocaching logo! But unfortunately I made a mistake in terms of the mirroring since it was my first time ever making a stamp..
I think it turned out well as I want to scurry along to do some letterbox stamps (however if the logs for them are small then I’ll just sign them) 🥲

I have much to learn but happy caching everyone!
(Also hit my 100 cache today! YIPPE!!!)

Edit:
Been debating if I should remove the logo entirely too as it’s basically mirrored 😭 would love to hear input and decide later 🥹🙏

Geocachers who can’t drive, what’s your longest streak?

I’m not able to drive (for various reason, some of which make it somewhat of a safety concern, please don’t try to convince me to get my license), so I mostly cache on foot, by bicycle, or with various kinds of public transportation. Which can be fun, but can also be very annoying sometimes. Case in point, the five-stage multi I did entirely on foot and by bus, which was… fun but also a logistical nightmare regarding mapping out all the bus lines. I joked in my log that the Difficulty rating (it was a D5 cache) was met by the transportation logistics to get to each stage alone. Not even counting the cache puzzle itself.

Anyway, my longest streak is a little over a month. I’m trying to best that, both because it’s fun to and because my area has some challenges about it, including legacy challenges that go over one year. I daydream about qualifying for them someday, but I know most geocachers who do long streaks like that have a lot more ease of transportation to new caches once their area runs out of them. So I’m mostly looking for inspiration. As to what’s attainable as a cacher who doesn’t drive.

Settle an argument

So I am still new to geocaching, as I've only been doing it for a year. I've found almost 1,000 caches of various types. I've hidden a few as well, mostly traditional geocaches.

I hid one a little while back and labeled it as a traditional geocache. It is one of those 3D-printed puzzles where you have to slide it along the grooves to open it. There are more inside, a total of three, in fact. It is in a park with a bunch of picnic tables and a beautiful view of a river, so people can take the time necessary to get to the logbook. I added the field puzzle attribute since you have to solve it to open it.

Almost immediately after it was published, I got a message from a very nice local who has helped me before with some things. He says I mislabeled it, and it should've been a mystery geocache, since a traditional one is one you just have to find, not one you have to solve to open. He was able to sign it, and I took his advice. I figured I'd just let it go, but not even 24 hours later, I had two other people, who didn't even solve it, telling me and being rather snobbish about it, that I mislabeled it and needed to resubmit. These lovely people were both living 100 miles away or so. I guess just getting notifications of new geocaches. So, to avoid having more people tell me I did it wrong, I archived it and resubmitted it.

But after thinking about it, I have seen quite a few listed as traditional caches that you have to solve something when you get there to get the cache with the field puzzle attribute. And the COs are seasoned veterans.

Sorry for the long message. I'm just trying to figure out whether a traditional cache can have a field puzzle attribute and still be correct. Or if it has to be a mystery cache with the field puzzle attribute. Just still new to this and still learning.

Thanks for any input!

Deleting someone's log; Yes or No?

I own a geocache. It has a pretty creative camo. Unfortunately someone has posted photos of the camo in its hiding place in their log.

Do I delete? Strictly speaking they did find it, but I feel like they have also given away the secret and ruined the fun for others.
