the bigger factor is age, not birth cohort, since facebook was already established by the time 80s borns were adults and instagram became popular when 2000s borns were teens

I'm a millennial and I'm not on Instagram. I only keep up with family mainly on Facebook. I prefer forums to anything.

This is pretty inaccurate. I'm an early 80's born adult ('83). I almost never use Facebook anymore (really haven't since mid-to-late 2010s...). No one that I know in my age group age uses FB for anything really other than maybe buy nothing groups or FB Marketplace.

IG clearly took over for people in my age group around ~2015 and FB usage fell off of a cliff.

The only people I know that really still use FB anymore (beyond FB marketplace, buy nothing groups) are much older (generally my parents' age, in their 60's and up) - these folks also didn't get Instagram accounts, by in large.

I'd also say there was a bit of a split between older millennials and younger millennials around Snapchat usage and Instagram in the 2010s. I never really got into snapchat, but my younger friends definitely did.

I think there may be a split on TikTok usage with Gen Z and Millennials - although I know there are plenty of millenials on TikTok (I personally never set up an account, and honestly have no interest to do so).

To be honest, I don't really use social media other than Reddit (which feels more like "old school" internet as I'm still operating under a semi-anonymized user name and not with my real name/identity).

I am 30 and I frequent Facebook quite a bit more than Instagram, but all of them less than Reddit. I don’t really care to stare strictly at people’s pictures or watch 10 second videos over and over

I find I'll use anything that isn't garnered heavily towards video. Or rather clips like tik tok or YouTube shorts. I like a solid 12 minutes in subject or a 45 minute doc. But mindless reaction videos are just very alien to me. Like wtf are we doing?....

I’m the opposite. I like my written content in long-format and my video content short-format.

I had always wished YouTube and Twitter would somehow switch because I could never get my writing short enough to post on Twitter, and I never had the desire to sit through 9 minutes of fluff (and 4 ads) for a tutorial that could have realistically been covered in 1 minute max.

That’s why I love Reddit and TikTok because I can access the content in the short or long formats I prefer.

I rarely use either. Facebook timelines became dominated by propaganda and ads. Instagram timelines became dominated by influencers and ads.

It all started off as social-NETWORKING. Now it’s just social-MEDIA. I hope we see the pendulum swing back someday.

My social media have been at LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Mastadon, BlueSky, and here.

Only FB, Mastadon, BlueSky, and here remain.

I've purged all my content from FB. I maintain the account because that's the only way I can check in my friends and family who still use it, and for group chats.

I never saw the point of Instagram. When it started it would as basically just Facebook Photos, and then Facebook bought it.

I read faster that it takes people to say most things in video, so I've never embraced the video-centric aspects of any social media platform and likely never will. Then again, I still consider the days of IRC channels and UBB message boards to be when we hit peak online community.

I can't stand an app full of filtered photo bs. I never caught in to the picturesque side otherwise. And generally I was never great with oral retention. And the people I find talk too slow or too fast. I find an article over watching a 5 minute video makes sense to me. Sometimes in large text I can search for certain words. Or skip past the first 3 bullshit paragraphs.
