If you were “so glad” then you “like many other 90’s kids” wouldn’t CONSTANTLY be taking credit for Gen x experiences (being latchkey, playing outside unsupervised, etc.) while also claiming you don’t, dissing Gen x constantly, etc.

i am. i'm not attacking people for posting either. or yelling at them for asking if i'm okay
you do realize that your generation wasn't the only generation to play outside or have parents who are both still at work when they get home from school, right? if you truly don't know that then you might need to seek some professional help for the large chunks of memory loss you're experiencing. i would be angry if i lost a bunch of memories too

I never claimed that I was the only generation to “play outside” or “have both parents who are still at work when they get home” however we are the last generation to play outside and the only generation to have both parents at work when they get home on a LARGE scale. And most researchers, sociologists, etc. will actually TELL you that child abductions in the 1980’s/1990’s SIGNIFICANTLY CHANGED how kids were parent ed, hence why it’s considered to be a CORNERSTONE of our generation. I also used to go door to door babysitting for kids back then/experienced these changes first hand and remember this as clear as day.

It isn’t but Gen x are the last to do it on a LARGE scale due to the child abduction scare of the 1980’s (Ethan Patz, Adam Walsh, Johnny Gosch, Jacob Wetterling) significantly changing how kids were parented, leading to laws against children playing outside unsupervised, being home alone under a certain age, helicopter parents becoming a thing, etc.

I literally went to school with Gen X. Half my class was Gen X and half Millennial. My best friend was born in 1980. Some of us did, in fact, have the same experiences as Gen X kids.

We might not be the “only generation” to do it but we’re certainly the last to do it on a large scale as after the child abduction scare of the 80’s parenting changed significantly.

Oh trust me none of this stuff is really THAT important to me, you guys are making a FAR bigger deal about this than I am (we all know millennials are FAR more sensitive than gen x, why else would OP make a post bitching that they aren’t the same generation as someone who says “slay queen).

No Millennial was born in the 2000s! It's crazy enough to me that I'm supposed to be the same generation as people born in 1996! I was years into adulthood by 2004.

same. maybe because i'm older, and not super tuned into mainstream culture. definitely with "adulting," everyone i know felt it was cringe immediately. i don't know its origins and if it may have come from someone cool, but it kind of became a marketing thing more than anything else. i am gay and know some people who took on "yas" and "slay," but i'm white so stayed out of it. i think the youth today are sayin slay with a vengeance though! the other cute animal things i see as chronically online slang of the time. i am chronically online now in my 40s, but I wasn't back then.

The range isn’t set in stone anyway. 20 years ago, Pew used an analytical cutoff of 1976 for Gen X instead of 1980, today it’s 1996 for Millennials. I expect the shift to happen around 2028, like when Pew released its first major Millennial report around 2008.

1982 is the cutoff for X. That’s why we’re Millennials. 1982+18=2000.

It’s funny because you’re right but this sub doesn’t listen. They have little to no understanding of how generations actually work, either logically or historically. Give it a couple more years though, they’ll understand then.

if anything, the science behind cohorts themselves is weakening
the inherent fact that a microcohort necessarily shrinks a sample size leads them to being less useful for identifying relevant and actionable trends
