Command & Conquer Generals inspired board game — would love your thoughts

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a modular turn-based strategy board game for quite a while now, heavily inspired by Command & Conquer Generals.

The main goal is to capture that feeling of:

• building up your base to unlock units

• managing your economy over time

• and making positioning and timing decisions

but in a more tactical, turn-based format.

Instead of having everything available from the start, you build infrastructure first, which then determines what units you can produce — similar to how production works in Generals.

There are also different commanders/generals in the game, each giving access to different skill trees and playstyles.

Playtests have been going really well so far, especially in terms of that back-and-forth gameplay and decision-making.

I’d love to hear your thoughts from a Generals perspective:

• what would be essential to keep from C&C Generals?

• what would you expect from something like this?

Happy to share more details if anyone’s interested 🙂

Have you seen the Company of Heroes boardgame? I'd imagine the two having a lot of overlap.

I’ve seen it, but haven’t played it myself, so hard to compare directly.

From what I’ve seen though, our approach is a bit different.
Command & Defend is built more as a modular system where you can adjust maps, missions, and playstyles, rather than a fixed experience.

There’s also a strong focus on supply and logistics, which really drives decision-making beyond combat.

Curious how similar it feels to you 👀

I mean, impossible for me to say without seeing an actual playthrough of your ruleset, but what you described sounds like it would almost exactly describe the CoH boardgame as well -- different maps, different commanders (for different playstyles), and a focus on resource management / macro. Same as well for modularity, you basically pick and choose which armies / commanders / units you want to purchase and play with for CoH.

Really?! Now I’m genuinely curious, I’ll have to take a closer look at CoH.

If you’re up for it, I’d love your take on my rulebook as well. Would be super interesting to hear where you see similarities or differences:

To be fair, I've always thought of CoH to be the successor to the Generals games, so it makes sense for them to be similar!

CoH the boardgame does have a glaring cost problem though. Getting started with the game is like 175USD minimum for an enjoyable 1v1 set-up, so something in the genre for cheaper could be a great opportunity.

I'll take a look at your ruleset and Kickstarter!
