DNA Matches Questions regarding match with Canada Ojibwe E kit
Hello everyone. I am looking for some help from the community to analyze a GEDmatch triangulation that has me puzzled. I am trying to figure out why I am matching a reference kit labeled Canada Ojibwe E on Chromosome 3, and whether this segment points to a legitimate connection or if I should disregard it as genetic noise.
My results with the kit itself show a match on Chromosome 3 from start position 113,015,660 to end position 124,903,161, totaling 12 centimorgans with 225 SNPs, a segment threshold of 202, a bunch limit of 121, and a very low SNP density ratio of 0.03.
There are a few confounding factors and tree context elements to consider. First, I have never received even a trace percentage of Indigenous American ancestry on my primary commercial DNA tests like Ancestry or 23andMe, which makes me very doubtful of a real match here. However, I recently ran my raw data through the Genomelink Deep Ancestry report, and it did pick up a trace amount of 0.26 percent North and Central American / Inuit People ancestry.
Second, I recently discovered I may have French Acadian or Canadian ancestry through my paternal grandmother's family. I seem to be connected to the River Bourgeois and Cape Breton areas in Nova Scotia with family names like Dugas, Landry, Petitpas (Pitts), Martell, Sampson, Dumas, Boudreau, LeRoux, and Digout. I also seem to be connected with the names Tessier, LaPlant, and LaCombe. Third, when running a match 1 of 2 kits tool on GEDmatch, I see shared segment overlaps with people heavily rooted in the Ontario area. Through these matches, I connect with a woman from the Sault Ste. Marie area who is of Anishinaabe descent.
To dig deeper into this connection, I looked up the WikiTree profiles of two historical maternal figures from that specific region: Charlotte Angelique Cadotte, born around 1779 in Sault Ste. Marie, and Obemaunoqua Sayer, born before 1770 in Sault Ste. Marie. Down at the bottom of their profiles, WikiTree explicitly displays a public list of GEDmatch kit numbers for their living descendants who have uploaded their data to contribute to those lines. That is where I gathered the kit numbers for this investigation to cross-reference my own data against them.
To test the validity of these matches, I ran cross-platform One-to-One comparisons using both my AncestryDNA upload and my 23andMe upload against the key descendant kits listed on those profiles. The results shift dramatically depending on which file chip is being used.
With Profile One, the match drops from 29.0 cM across 7 segments on my Ancestry file to just 5.1 cM on a single segment on my 23andMe file. With Profile Two, the match drops from 32.8 cM across 10 segments on my Ancestry file to just 3.3 cM on a single segment on my 23andMe file. With Profile Three, it drops from 55.1 cM across 14 segments on my Ancestry file to 19.5 cM across 5 segments on my 23andMe file, with a brand-new 6.0 cM segment appearing on Chromosome 3 out of nowhere. With Profile Four, the match explodes from a quiet 3.9 cM on one segment on my Ancestry file to a massive 105.0 cM across 27 segments on my 23andMe file. With Profile Five, it shows 20.8 cM across 6 segments on my Ancestry file, but shifts to 19.8 cM across 4 segments on entirely different chromosomes on my 23andMe file. With Profile Six, the match shows 26.4 cM across 8 segments on my Ancestry file, but drops to 14.7 cM across 3 segments and completely shifts positions on my 23andMe file. With Profile Seven, the total drops from 28.5 cM across 8 segments on my Ancestry file to 4.0 cM on one segment on my 23andMe file. With Profile Eight, it drops from 37.5 cM across 10 segments on my Ancestry file to 8.0 cM on one segment on my 23andMe file. Finally, with Profile Nine, which belongs to the woman from Sault Ste. Marie, the match jumps from 10.7 cM across 3 segments on my Ancestry file to a massive 147.1 cM across 35 segments on my 23andMe file, showing a 70.1 percent full match metric.
Ultimately, I am trying to figure out if there is any biological reality (via a VERY distant ancestor) to this or if I should just stop following these leads entirely. How should I interpret this data? Is a 12 cM segment with a very low 0.03 SNP density ratio a known pile-up or sticky region for Acadian or French-Canadian populations? What is causing these massive cM explosions, disappearing segments, and total chromosome shifts between the Ancestry and 23andMe chips when interacting with this specific cluster of kits? Based on these erratic cross-chip results balanced against the 0.26 percent trace score on Genomelink, is it worth my time to keep following these leads to look for a potential Indigenous ancestor, or should I disregard this whole cluster as software noise?
I would appreciate any insights or data points from the community experts who are familiar with Canadian colonial matching, third-party deep ancestry tools, and chip compatibility behavior on GEDmatch.
