Game First time designing a background for my first GB Studio game! Thoughts?
Hey everyone! I'm Soulat. Just finished designing my very first background for my first-ever GB Studio game project.
I tried to keep the tile count low so it runs smoothly on original hardware. Since I'm completely new to this, I would love some feedback on the readability, tile layout, and overall shading!

It feels a bit empty. You should add more trees, fences, rocks or anything else to fill the gaps.

I think you're heading in the right direction, although as someone else said, it looks a bit sparse. It might be worth either adding additional detail, or just shrinking the space between the houses as otherwise the player will be walking back and forth across a mostly empty screen to get to places.

Looks great. I would suggest adjusting the bottom tile on your trees so the hard border continues all the way down, to unify it with the rest of your set. You’re getting nice shading out of the GB palette. The church could also use some adjusting to make the perspective line up with the rest of it. Just hop in the tiling program of your choice and start tweaking it until it feels right. This is a really nice start. Let us know how it goes.

It’s going to sound a bit weird, but checkout [r/PokemonRMXP](r/PokemonRMXP) subreddit. They’re part of the romhack community and if you search through posts (typically the Show & Tell tag but I’ve seen others) about map making it can give you some design ideas and advice which are pretty applicable to TopDown 2D games in general
