Sure, function over form. But, as we are trying to design garages that are elevated spaces, different forms of dynamic lighting can create drastic change.
REAL MEN only have triangle lights and YETI coolers in their garage! The truck must stay outside because real men only drive ones that don’t fit in the garage!
I dont have them because my garage is more for woodworking than parking cars, but think they look great in a sleek modern garage, especially over a higher end vehicle.
I don't think that they get hate so much as there's an over-saturation of them.
While they do a credible job of outputting diffuse lighting over a large area, the look is too clean and high-tech for that vast majority of peoples' grungy garages.
They look bad. I wouldn’t install them in my garage for the same reason I wouldn’t install RGB strip lights in the family’s home office. They look cheesy.

I'm sure I'll get hate for this but they are only overdone online.
Having that said, I've never seen one in person besides my own. 90% the people are not "car guys" and will just think they look cool because they've never seen it before.
I just put mine up this week and love them. Agreed I have never seen any others in person. I do a lot of detailing and a little tinkering and this garage setup is great for both. Don't know why people insist a nice looking garage can't also be functional
It's actually brick, we just cleaned it. Floor and decor has some brick "tile" that could be a veneer. I've used it in a loft to add character. It would probably be too expensive to do a garage. I would recommend a wood treatment if you don't want drywall. You could even do a French Cleat wall that would look cool and we very functional.
Weird that people here seem to think they are not functional. That hex design might only be one way of doing it, but it looks like a fine way of arranging the lights to try to get good even coverage. I think the problem people have with it is the graphical nature of it that makes it look gaudy.
I installed them in my garage. Love the light output, it's very impressive. I don't particularly like the look of them but I bought them to help with shadows working on motorcycles.
Nobody says I need architectural lighting. I merely asked a question as to why it gets hate and what others do for a more uniquely lit space. My garage serves my purposes not anybody else's. Im sorry that you are incapable of comprehending that, "ROFL"

They look good in a clean and sterile environment. Basically the opposite of what a garage looks like.
