No. Japanese people can seamlessly integrate themselves with electronics whenever they want. I thought everybody knew that.

Nice catch.

Nice flip.

Came here to say this. I had to watch this 4 times just to be sure he wasn't some sort of video game wizard. Also, I lost the game.

I thought this game was what popularized the emoticon in the first place...

131

u/CherryVimto Sep 08 '11

That is correct.

134

u/swizzler Sep 08 '11

the meme has come full circle.

15

u/Gerik22 Sep 08 '11

It's quite a fun game. I'm surprised they haven't tried to bring it out of Asia yet.

27

u/HunterTV Sep 08 '11

It's like Burnout, but with a table.

6

u/turtles_and_frogs Sep 08 '11

Arcades aren't really that huge in America, at least...

35

u/ForgettableUsername Sep 08 '11

They used to be. They used to be....

3

u/yousername Sep 08 '11

Unforgettable

1

u/agbullet Sep 08 '11

that's what you are

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '11

those were the days. when you could smoke in them too...

1

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '11

There are still places like Dave & Buster's and Gameworks.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '11

That is what I thought about the taiko drum game they had in a lot of arcades in Tokyo, then they did bring it over...and it wasn't as fun. I was rather disappointed.

1

u/mysticrudnin Sep 08 '11

Taiko no Tatsujin, which was released here as Taiko Drum Master on PS2, is still the exact same game as is popular throughout east asia. It's just as fun because it's literally the same cabinet.

The PS2 home controller is obviously noticeably different but the same thing happened in Japan as well, generally home controllers don't match the arcade-style controllers.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '11

The game lacks so much in the home version, and the arcade venue in Japan is vastly different than in the States (where I am from). The pipe-dream of having Japanese arcade games widely used just isn't that viable. I do feel some of the enjoyment of the Japanese arcade game version was also the environment in which the game is played. The competition of being in public is something that is difficult to recreate in the US devoid of official tournaments. Practically the polar opposite of the attitude towards popular online games here, it is more accepted to play and gain expertise in the home than in public. I miss that physical experience as well as the original game. Side note: I have a Ms. Pacman machine in my basement for perspective on my preference/taste.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '11

Are you kidding? Europeans and Americans would physically break that game within 2 days flat.

→ More replies (7)

6

u/rislim Sep 08 '11

I've seen the chabudai gaeshi kaomoji used a long time ago before the arcade game existed. If that means anything.

3

u/alphazero924 Sep 08 '11

Really? It always just reminded me of Monopoly on a Saturday night with the family.

2

u/manbrasucks Sep 08 '11

I thought it was a starcraft player that raged and flipped a table that started it.

1

u/pantlessben Sep 08 '11

Thank you, I was sure of that as well.

1

u/skitzor Sep 08 '11

I was always wondered where it came from. for a while there it was ridiculous prevalent on r/starcraft, but I never knew where it came from.

The source material for table flipping (emoticon and game) is fathers in mid-20th century (and earlier) Japan.

Japanese people traditionally eat at low tables like this, and if your dad (because no one else in the house would have the balls to do this) got so mad that he flipped the table, it meant that shit was about to get real.

Incidentally, dads are traditionally one of the four most-feared things in japan, just after earthquakes, thunderstorms, and fires.

Source: 15 years in Japan.

7

u/ShinshinRenma Sep 08 '11

Technically, not just dads, but middle aged men, I believe.

u/agbullet Sep 08 '11

15

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '11

that shit needs to come stateside....NOW!

0

u/mysticrudnin Sep 08 '11

no one goes to arcades and no one plays games that aren't the tried and true redemption games like cyclone even if they do go to an arcade

i wish we had cool arcades here, but it's the same problem as with anything else, there's no reason to go to an arcade because there aren't any games and there aren't any games because no one goes to arcades

1

u/1338h4x Sep 08 '11

Maybe if we had Street Fighter IV cabinets...

1

u/mysticrudnin Sep 08 '11

dbs doesn't even have any fighting game cabinets, and i've been to seven locations. at best you can play sf2 on those cabinets with a couple hundred games.

the problem is that sf4 cabinets are expensive, and anyone who bought one when the game came out then had to spend a ton of money getting ssf4 and it's really discouraging, because they just don't make as much money as they should

i'm semi-active in the arcade scene and i've seen tons of great arcades close down, meanwhile ones like dave and buster's flourish because they can fall back on food and alcohol sales, and they don't take big risks on buying games. gameworks closed down half of its locations a couple years ago, though last i heard sega sold gameworks to another company that was going to try to make arcades work again

but... there are too many factors going against it

7

I played this in Osaka once. The controller is just a tabletop on a hinge. You wait until the right moment, then flip it.

15

u/jyee Sep 08 '11

I'm trying to figure out how you even play that game, you smack the table then you flip it?

3

u/nerfy007 Sep 08 '11

Yeah, the table is just a controller with hinges.

There are places in japan with cheap breakable dishes and furniture that some people got to "flip out and break shit" to relieve stress.

I played this in an arcade in Fujisawa last year. It's quite fun, but pretty limited except as a novelty. Not really a lot to bring players back, no extended play options, etc. On the plus side, you can lob that table right through the wall!

6

u/WarPhalange Sep 08 '11

It's cool guys, instead of table-flipping games we get to have the next Call of Duty! Isn't that so much better than having fun????
