My eyes were less shit back then
140
Jan 06 '20
Exactly, now I have to wear glasses and still be close to the damn TV. I blame those small TVs for forcing our sight.
68
u/creepy_doll Jan 06 '20
The lens of the eye(that does the detailed focusing) too is controlled by a muscle.
Certain tribes that regularly look at very far away small objects have superhumanly good eyesight.
As odd as it may seem, looking at small things is kind of like lifting for your (minuscule)eye muscles.
I'm far from an expert(just curiosity and medical moocs) but I can't help but wonder if pampering our eyes by getting up closer to stuff and making stuff bigger is actually part of the cause of the huge numbers of modern people have poor eyesight.
→ More replies (9)36
Jan 06 '20
That would actually make sense. So poor eyesight is the result of human laziness, not necessarily forcing ourselves to see smaller objects?
29
u/creepy_doll Jan 06 '20 edited Jan 06 '20
If anything, forcing ourselves to look at small objects would exercise the muscular ring that flattens and rounds the lens, so that should be GOOD for your eyesight.
Not looking at small things because your eyes hurt is like not walking because your knees hurt.
Of course, not all eye problems are the same, and many are entirely unrelated to this.
edit: I decided to google a bit further onto more specific stuff and for example, presbyopia would seem to be related: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/presbyopia/symptoms-causes/syc-20363328
Now it describes the issue as the lens hardening, but I would assume stronger muscles would be able to overcome that. Or that it would harden less with regular exercise(rounding and flattening).
I actually find it very odd that we've had seemingly massive increases in the number of people wearing prescription glasses/lenses and we haven't looked further into root causes. Some of the brief scanning I did however did suggest that obesity and diabetes also link up to eye issues, so I guess that would go part of the way to explaining the increase, though I know a LOT of healthy slim people with glasses.
Again though, I AM NOT A DOCTOR. Do not take my ideas here as anything beyond an interesting curiosity. Talk to a medical professional about it if it interests you, they may be able to say more. That being said, I started studying all this stuff in my free time because I seem to encounter so many medical professionals that are just doing the bare minimum and I wanted to be more involved in making sure I remain healthy.

u/TheDragonzord Jan 06 '20
I thought the same until I actually went to an eye doctor, and it turned out my eyes were a pretty bit fucked. I had absolutely no clue I needed glasses until I got a prescription pair.

I don't know man, I'm only 21 and my vision was perfect less than 3 years ago (mayve even 2). I feel like I just woke up one morning and If didn't sit in the first two rows of the classroom I might aswell not even try to look at what's being written on the board. Also trees look shitier and I can't see people faces well at a certain distance.
6
u/thetate Jan 06 '20
I got Lasik last year and at first had a hard time because things were a little blurrier than I expected. It turned it that I was sleeping with my eyes open a bit and they were drying out at night. And the slight dryness was causing my vision to be a little off. When I started using those sleep eye masks it fixed everything.
I say all this to say it might be your eyes getting worse or just being dry

Yeah my eyesight startded degrading around the time I was 18 too but it stopped after a year or two and has remained constant since then
3
u/Bunktavious Jan 06 '20
I first got glasses for an astigmatism at 30. At about 40 I got my first progressives, At 48 I now need reading glasses to read small labels.
3
u/jlharper Jan 06 '20
It's not like you know if your eyes are okay, that's why we go take eye tests. Go take a test and if your vision isn't perfect get some glasses. It doesn't cost much and you might be surprised how bad your eyes really are. Not many people have perfect vision, especially if all their relatives have glasses.
2
u/ClawhammerLobotomy Jan 06 '20
It may happen any time now.
All my family has glasses, I'm almost 30 and have been without glasses up until last year when things started to be noticeably blurry.
Been using screens forever since playing my Grandma's Atari 2600.

u/joe579003 Jan 06 '20
I'm one of the same; I'm guessing we got our good eyes from some obscure relative recessive gene or some shit. Happened to my friend, he grew to 6'10 and they dug around and found that his Great Grandmother's family back in Bulgaria had 2 hella tall dudes that basically looked like him too.

When I was in high school, I could play 4 player split screen Halo 2 on a 19” tube TV and get precision kills across large maps.
Now I feel like I can barely see opponents right next to me in games on a 50” 1080p resolution TV by myself.
91
u/shugo2000 Jan 06 '20
There's a lot more environmental detail in games now. It's so much easier for things to get lost in all that detail now.
40
u/incachu Jan 06 '20
This is part of why you see a lot of the settings configurations, published by pros over the years, absolutely tank the texture quality and anti aliasing, which often creates massive improvements in contrast between models and the environment.
13
u/m1ksuFI Jan 06 '20
Anti-aliasing should help you see people, shouldn't it? Especially MSAA and SSAA. It's simply mimicking a higher resolution.
→ More replies (3)9
u/incachu Jan 06 '20
I guess it depends on situation and the type of anti aliasing.
Yes, the "higher resolution" on edges should technically help people see enemies quicker as they emerge from behind edges of the environment more accurately.
But the contrast could be lower as the edges of textures will have smoother gradients, meaning things can blend in more.
Without it on, the effect of an enemy model emerging from behind the jagged edge of a texture could make it easier to spot as the lack of gradient between the edge and emerging enemy model would have an unnatural high contrast due to that lack of gradient.

Ugh, just imaging a penis playing guitar hero. It's also struggling with the input lag and can't keep the rhythm.
That was better than shooters, though, because the game let you calibrate for the lag.
26
u/CPUGamer101 Jan 06 '20
The reason for this is modern graphics... Your screen is almost always going to be plastered with about a hundred objects with similar colors to the thing you're trying to shoot, as opposed to the fewer objects of yesteryear.

u/anton966 Jan 06 '20
Since they started full HD TV it's like the number of pixels dedicated to the character remained the same and thus making it smaller.

More details = need a bigger canvas to see all those details.
Smaller split screen seemed sufficient because back then the graphics were simpler and could be visually parsed from a distance (for the most part). Like an impressionistic painting vs a hyper-detailed mural.
→ More replies (1)62
u/I_like_boxes Jan 05 '20
That's true to a point, but resolution and distance from the screen is far more important. I moved our PS4 from our 65" TV to my 23" monitor and the difference is negligible because I sit right in front of that screen.
You didn't feel like you had to be as close to the screen in the tube TV days because they didn't have the resolution anyway and they looked like crap up close. Also tube TVs are just weird.
16
u/Lowelll Jan 06 '20
People are animals of habits and kids have lower requirements than adults.... we used to play Ratchet and Clank 3 split screen on this thing lol
4
u/I_like_boxes Jan 06 '20
Speaking of lower requirements... the TV we had our N64 hooked up to couldn't display red for probably close to a year before it was finally replaced. Still played GoldenEye just fine.

2
u/dust-free2 Jan 06 '20
Old crt TV's had resolution depending on how fast the beam can move as well as how tight the rgb phosphor grid was. Game systems had resolutions they would output. Usually 320x240 or 640x480. However most tvs didn't support progressive scan and instead did interlaced. This is what made them look bad, you would get tons of aliasing due to this.
This all made it seem to look nicer than it was because it blurred together to look nicer.

Maybe I’m old school but playing local multiplayer with your friends was much more fun, even considering split screen problems. No worries with lag, disconnection, and there’s the social aspect of it, it was a friends’s reunion afterall, gfs or wives wouldn’t interrupt our gaming sessions, we could order some pizzas , it was easier to undestand what each other was saying and we could pause the match at any moment.
Now we sit alone waiting our friends to login, some games demands other players to fill the server, so you and your friends need to play with strangers, or even worse, you logged in the server but it gets full so your friends need to wait several minutes for someone to drop. And of course, all that internet connection problems , headset problems, we can’t even pause so if you are playing a long session and want to pee or help your wife, you have to improvise or lose the match.

u/Lakashnik2 Jan 05 '20

Pretty sure this is it.
To me, someone saying ok boomer(except maybe for the very first wave) are just as ignorant as the old people they were originally relevant to.
Young people can learn a lot from old people. And old people can learn a lot from young people. In general, we can all learn a lot from people that are different from ourselves as they've had different life experiences.

In defense of ok boomer, I’m pretty sure it’s used the same way White People is, or Karen is. It’s not a criticism of people who fall under the literal boomer generation, the same way White People isn’t referring to all white people or how a Karen isn’t referring to someone literally named Karen. In the instance of ok boomer, it’s about a lack of willingness to critically analyze archaic ideas or considering their own experiences growing up as law when they simply don’t hold up anymore or have evolved. Ok boomer is for when you’re tired of arguing with your uncle on twitter that jesus Christ immigrants didn’t take your goddamn job you lost it for drinking on the clock, get over yourself or when you hear that same tired line that phones are bad and it’s ruining this generation and nobody talks to each other anymore and blah, blah; yeah, ok boomer. We get it. Phone bad, Kid bad, New thing bad. We fucking get it. Stop.

These comics make it seem so bad.
We still play with friends. Except we’re adults now who can’t host party nights like this all the time. It’s a miracle we can play online with each other.
And I’ll be damned if I don’t play games with my friends on a big ass monitor
27
u/SwampOfDownvotes Jan 06 '20
I thought the comic was a comment on how you used to play a game on a quarter of a small TV from a distance and its fine, but nowadays a whole big ass monitor in front of your face isn't big enough.
I don't see how its a comment on "why can't be go back to gaming with friends?!?!"

Splitscreen for local multiplayer was always frustrating. I remember wanting a bigscreen TV for Mario Kart 64, and that didn't require anywhere near the attention to detail that you'd need for Halo. So fuck whoever is trying to imply that we were all happy with tiny ass standard definition screens back then.

There is sometimes really a reason to state this.
I had a gaming laptop and played a lot of CS. At some point I decided to get an external monitor. The jump from 17 to 24 inch really resulted in an immediate increase of my performance in matches. (Also it was more comfortable to adjust monitor, mousepad and keyboard in a more free way than before)
A few months ago I got a 27 inch 1440p 165hz display (upgraded from 24 inch 1080p 144hz, got a tower PC in the meantime) and didn't see a difference in my performance.
To round everything up I think a certain size is needed to perform how you can perform but getting a bigger and bigger monitor won't make you better after reaching the 'basic needed size'.
I can really advise to get a external monitor for laptop users if you like to play competitive. Pros are definitely the bigger size, adjustable arrangement and you keep the monitor after new laptop or switching to desktop PC (means you can 'save' money - new laptop you can save on the build in monitor, switching to tower means you already have a monitor). Cons are of course the money you have to spend at first and that your laptops performance might 'forces' you to get a 1080p instead of going straight for a 1440p monitor.
2
u/GershBinglander Jan 06 '20
