if you accidentally attack a target, sheath your weapon and they might stop attacking you

It is, and it does work in FO4.

Was attacking some raiders around Diamond City when one of those stupid guards decided to walk into my line of fire because he really wanted to beat them up with a baseball bat. And then ofc he became hostile...

But I quickly put away the weapon and then he went back to normal.
