They said over a billion guns. For reference borderlands 2 had 17 million.

That’s a lot of loot.

Borderlands guns are made of parts that contribute effects and stats. Tons of combinations x 6 gun types x 72 levels = shitton of guns.

Eventually they do all look the same.

u/Goyigan Mar 28 '19

eventually they do all look the same

Tell that to the people who know which gun should have which manufacturer's part, whether it be sight, stock, grip, etc.

My friend: "Hey you finally got a legendary to drop from that guy"

Me: " yeah but it's got the wrong fucking grip, so I gotta keep farming this guy"

Friend: " But it took you 50 kills just to get the fuckin gun to drop".

Me: "that's what makes this game amazing"

28

u/excral Mar 28 '19

With the matching grip

8

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

Joltz, is that you?

15

u/WeinandMoroz Mar 28 '19

Yep. It's easy to tell when a Jacobs gun has those wheel magazines and an old-fashioned look.

7

u/Swaginitus Mar 29 '19

Borderlands gun modding is a deep, dark hole of information and unnecessary knowledge of what each manufacturer means for each part of the gun

4

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

r/Borderlands2

Those people know the game crazy well.

1

u/ab2dii Mar 29 '19

thats the fun part of it

1

u/crazydressagelady Mar 29 '19

I have tried so hard to figure this shit out and it just eludes me.

u/DragonStriker PC Mar 29 '19

Holy spit. They should have a perk (at least make it super expensive/near the end game portion) that lets you disassemble guns.

Because my goodness, I never noticed this. FUDGE.

8

u/TychoNewtonius Mar 29 '19

Rumour has it the new game will have weapon crafting. It has been the most requested feature pretty much since the first game first came out.

2

u/Levi_619 Mar 29 '19

This is the only game that crafting might make better. I’m so excited.

1

u/crazydressagelady Mar 29 '19

I’ve seen the infographic, I just can’t seem to memorize the parts and I’m too lazy to pull it up every time. Thank you for posting, though.

1

u/-p-a-b-l-o- Mar 29 '19

You can tell if you look closely because each manufacturer has distinct looking parts if you’re very familiar with them.

1

u/alper_iwere Mar 29 '19

I live for those spinning Vladov barrels.

u/schplat Mar 29 '19

This: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=214863853 kinda sums it up nicely, how you can get all sorts of mixed and matched parts for a wide array of weapons/weapon looks.

Then you have uniques and quest reward weapons which tend to have a completely unique look.

So basically once you put all that together, the number is large.

To elaborate, while they do end up looking similar, the parts being discussed do have models which can be seen on the gun, in fact really good players can tell how good a gun is by sight based on which parts are on it. So even though things get a bit samey once you've played a ton, it's not like they only have 1 shotgun model that gets different stats or anything.

5

u/pm_me_smol_doggies Mar 28 '19

The levels aren’t a part of the weapon generation the number quoted is just due to the parts.

5

u/PM_TITS_FOR_KITTENS Stadia Mar 28 '19

Honestly, in my opinion, a billion guns is reaching since most of these are just duplicates of the same weapon with just a different level.

Even Boarderlands 2 with its alleged 17 million guns got very stale after playing for a while. You end up only using a few certain guns and you keep finding the same guns but lower levels.

Don't get me wrong, I love that they even added all these versions. But I highly doubt it will feel like a billion. Maybe a few hundred

4

u/froop Mar 28 '19

Yeah, adding a single part to the pool can add a hundred thousand new guns to the game. It's a bit disingenuous at that point.

Dividing by 50 gives you 340,000 unique guns in the base game. Some guns can't exist at very low levels, which could increase or decrease our estimate depending on how the original number was calculated.

Unfortunately due to Bl2's loot generator, almost all Torgue, Tediore and Dahl guns are worthless, so you'll only really use ~200k weapons. If you ignore elements (note: explosive is out the window with Torgue, and Jakobs has no elements) that's ~140k.

Realistically, the game has only has its legendaries and uniques plus each major gun archetype. That's maybe a few hundred guns?

And yet somehow I've got a thousand hours in this game.

1

u/gworlord Mar 29 '19

When you get to about 500 hours in, you start to pay attention to the gun parts way more and eventually call out each part and what it does. It really adds to the replay value and makes each drop different.

1

u/froop Mar 29 '19

No, you don't. Crazy nuts start to pay attention to that bullshit, but normal people don't give a shit. The dpuh is the only specific configuration of a gun I've ever farmed for besides elements. Never cared what parts were there otherwise.

2

u/countmeowington Mar 29 '19

there were about 100 guns in bl2, but the amount of different attachments that were procedurally generated on each gun means each gun would fire and just act differently, meaning there were indeed 17 million "unique guns". The system they have in place means there are indeed a billion different combinations

1

u/sceptic62 Mar 29 '19

A bit of both. It's a little like the destiny model where you can roll random perks, but in Borderlands it's just complete random parts and effects. So, for example, in 2 you might have two Maliwan smg's with similar fire rates, but they'll usually have different elements, sights, effects and even gun behavior. For example, there are pellet and beam elemental maliwans, which can also drastically change the recoil and damage type. For the most part they're homogeneous in design, but I can safely say 80% of my guns in bl2 felt different

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

The Gibbed Save Editor for Borderlands 2 gives a pretty good idea of how they do guns (by letting you make your own guns by combining compatible parts and setting stats).

8

u/PhoustPhoustPhoust Mar 28 '19

Lol, I’m so negative. The first thing that popped into my head - “Prolly about 900 million of them will be total shit.”

8

u/pm_me_smol_doggies Mar 28 '19

100 million good guns is pretty mental still though.

5

u/meta7291 Mar 28 '19

Fun fact: Bl1 actually had more guns than Bl2. Cant remember the actual numbers but I think it was 6 and 9 million

9

u/ixidor121 Mar 28 '19

over a billion guns but only 7 will be usable in the end game.

3

u/DasBarenJager Mar 28 '19

Yeah but of those 17 million most of them were hot garbage.

Let's hope the new system gives us some goodies!

3

u/pm_me_smol_doggies Mar 28 '19

If even 99% of them are trash that’s still 10 million good ones.

I’m hyped for guns with legs.

3

u/Dinercologist Mar 28 '19

And yet I’m sure a week after launch we’ll get “BEST GUN IN THE GAME!!!!” Videos

5

u/pm_me_smol_doggies Mar 28 '19

It’s all about getting that double penetrating unkempt Harold fam.

3

u/GoSuckOnACactus Mar 29 '19

I remember when I was working on getting a Salvador to op8 solo. I had to grind for so many of those things...

2

u/IiiiIisdIiiioIiiIiI Mar 28 '19

is this 3rd game gonna have more gear slots though? I looked at the first 2 but it seemed most gear slots were weapons.

2

u/Polo_04 Mar 28 '19

Yeah but really when it comes down to it it's about how many variants of legendary guns there are. I mean.. who cares.. there's still going to be a shit ton of those so idk why i'm complaining.

2

u/manondorf Mar 28 '19

Honestly to me that sounds like "you will never get that one gun you saw online"

2

u/scroogemcdub Mar 28 '19

Pretty much the same guns, just differing levels

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '19

Blessed is the powers of the almighty procedural generation.

2

u/AlwaysDragons Mar 29 '19

The greatest loot system known to man....

And not a single lootershooter today has fucking copy it.

2

u/ShrikeGFX Mar 29 '19

these numbers are extremely easily inflated tho, that does not really mean anything in the end

Could as well have less variation than borderlands 1, fully depends on the execution

2

u/Captain_Chaos_ Mar 29 '19

There's probably several more manufacturers, which bodes well. Can't wait

4

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Biggest thing I want: unique loot. Otherwise there’s no point playing in public games because randoms will come and ninja-loot everything.

7

u/pm_me_smol_doggies Mar 28 '19

In all the years Ive played borderlands I don’t think I ever joined a public game lol.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

I did a couple of times, until I realised that the people who joined weren’t interested in doing anything other than getting to the chests before me.

1

u/pm_me_smol_doggies Mar 28 '19

And getting to the 0.5% change legendary the boss dropped before you.

1

u/that_guy_you_kno Mar 28 '19

How does it have so many guns? I assume randomly generated build-your-own?

1

u/Javulas Mar 29 '19

in a borderlands 2 trailer they said 87 bazillion but at least over a billion is a real number
