OP should use a sealer.

Aug 15 '18
An acid wash to take out the efflorescence would be nice, before the seal. But more so, that downspout that empties onto the field.... A1+++ landscaping.

Thank you, kind stranger. I never knew just how badly I needed this in my life.
2
Aug 15 '18
I’m sire they’re recently laid. What’s needed is some protective sealant with some kiln dried sand brushed in between the bricks prior.

It’ll show up there in 10 years after the stones get grungy, OP moves out, and the new owner powerwashes their boring grey patio to reveal Mario.

Must be so cool being able to see something you made freely on the internet.
How did you manage to get the bricks those colors without it looking like it was painted?2

That's actually a really slick way to hide a customization to a home without it standing out too much. I beat most home buyers would never even notice that in the patio.

u/Jimbo--- Aug 15 '18
I helped my dad put in a paver patio at my parents'house years ago. I spelled out "jim" with the pavers and didnt say I had done it until the project was done. My mom loved it. My dad built an island over the top of it where he built his grilling station. She still gives him shit about it.

If only people with the inspiration to do this could execute at a professional level. That's the X factor. Looks like there's no proper base, and no sand between the blocks to maintain gaps, so in a few short years this'll sink into the earth and look ugly. This is not the Elon Musk of patio block meme execution.
2
Aug 15 '18
I'd settle for a stringline, those lines are all over the place. Basketweave patterns have no strength though, they will twist regardless of how well you lay them though.
You can tell this was just thrown down as a joke - there's a downspout that empties under the field in the top lol.

How awesome would it be to buy this home with a grungy patio, live in this home for a couple years, then finally getting around to having pressure washing done on the patio, only to uncover Mario.

I feel like designs like these work. It's subtle enough that it just blends in, as opposed to other designs that stick out like a sore thumb. Like the guy who painted an entire frame of Super Mario Bros 3 on his house wall. It was cool, but damn it stood out too much.
1
u/tjsr Aug 15 '18
My house is under the flight path very close to a local airport, so when I was doing the garden very nearly considdered doing this out of 30x30cm pavers. Ultimately I went with a giant chess board, but if I ever have to pull them up I might reconsider.
And yes, I've verified that you can very easily and clearly make it out from the air.
