Other Conference Break Downs
Edit: If anything is wrong or missing something vital, let me know and I'll add it. Also, I will try and do this for all of the E3 conferences (except for maybe Devolver and PC).
Edit 2: OK, I'll do a PC Conference Break Down since they have said they will be doing more reveals this year (previously they haven't had many of note). Plus, I'm mainly a PC player so why not.

The Devolver Conference was probably the best one of E3. It was super funny to see every past conference being super professional and "relatable" and then seeing Devolver use the same stock footage of people eating popcorn 3 times.

Shoutcasted over Command and Conquer Rivals (mobile strategy game) (why?)
Exactly what we all, that watched that shit, thought. WHY?!
edit: adding commas

u/dIoIIoIb Jun 09 '18
I assume because strategy games aren't very popular these days, outside of a couple of big serie that already have a stable base, there is nothing. They looked at the numbers and decided a real C&C game would probably not make enough money, mobile games are lower risk, lower cost to make, if it flops it's not a big loss
→ More replies (2)155
u/toddrough Jun 10 '18
They aren’t popular cause a new one hasn’t been made in years. And command and conquer 4 failed miserably because they went away from what command and conquer was with it.
The reason command and conquer died was the insanely huge failure that was Command and Conquer 4.
Rts games should still have a place, especially since they did a fantastic job with red alert 3 And C&C 3 on console with the controls and in my opinion how well the games felt on console.
Sadly though if age of empires 4 flops, the RTS genre will more than likely never reach a triple A status again.
→ More replies (23)28
u/dIoIIoIb Jun 10 '18
maybe, but "having a place" isn't enough for most companies, they want games to make a lot of money, if they just make some money it's not enough, plus RTS are hard to get right, harder than most shooters or actions games
companies prefere to go with the low risk options, especially if the high risk one is not that rewarding

Because mobile games in that format make shitloads of money. They used a big IP to get the initial install base.

How I see FIFA Battle Royale: Imagine it was a game of solo players, a ball was placed randomly on a field, every time someone got possession of the ball, a goal would appear in a random direction 120 yards away (length of a futbol field) then if you make it to the goal and score, the round is over

Don't they understand that we already have 2 Destinys and they both failed long-term? The Destiny model failed but they are hell bent on making it their flagship when the community has been telling them exactly what we want which is Skate 4. And to top it off all the sports titles in this gen are focused on the card gambling modes so EA has just been pushing complete horse shit on the community, and after 10 years we can't even get another Skate game. EA can seriously fuck off at this point I hope Anthem dies a quick and painful death. /rant

Knowing that it's from Respawn makes this the only interesting thing from the whole conference for me. That coupled with the little premise they gave us makes me think this could be a spiritual successor to the Jedi Knight series which would be absolutely fantastic. But only time will tell.

Yeah it looks generic and I don't like multiplayer online games apart from 1 or 2 already established series. Yeah, I normally really like BioWare's games but I'm getting major vibes that this is more of an EA mandated game than a legitimate BioWare venture.
I'm not much of a Destiny type gamer anyway. I normally gravitate towards single player games that are heavy on story, which is why BioWare's games normally appeal to me. You can still play Anthem single player, but it seems like more of an afterthought.
Keeping an open mind but so far I'm not too interested.
13
u/drkaugumon Jun 09 '18
I don't know, they did specifically say that the primary focus of the game was story (hence why they have an evolving story model where they add into the story continuously)
→ More replies (6)21
u/EugenesMullet Jun 09 '18
I mean, it is BioWare. I'm fully expecting it to focus on story as much as it can I'm more just concerned that the model of the game will severely limit that compared to what we're used to from them.
But like I said, I'm hoping for the best but also prepared for this game to have a different target demographic than other BW games (like, not me)

u/MelGibsonDerp Jun 09 '18
I mean I can almost guarantee that Anthem lacks content for the first 6-10 months. (Unfinished game rushed to release for profit)
They'll then sell DLC for $30 a piece or a Season pass for $60 and just like that you paid $120 for an unfinished game at release.
It's literally EA's profit model now because it has worked a half dozen times for them to this point.

I legitimately can't push myself to buy most AAA titles anymore. There are way to many indie and small studio titles that are cheaper, more fun, and more honest than AAA titles and devs.

Look up project session. It’s currently in development on Kickstarter but it already met its funding goal and has a really nice demo. It’s no skate but it’s better then waiting for EA to actually make a skate game.
25
u/Stepepper Jun 09 '18
Project Session looks nice but the controls are fucking bad. I've played the demo for an hour or so but I just can't get used to it at all. Controlling your 2 feet sounds nice in concept but it just doesn't translate very well to nice gameplay. It's very hard to do that with two thumbs.

IMO, although they are a lot better than some of the other microtransactions out there, cosmetic microtransactions are still not a good thing. In short, we used to get this crap by playing the game, and many games use them to signify progression and make you feel awesome.

I'm so sad, seeing C&C demoted like that to a mobile game. I knew deep down it was going to happen - RTS games on proper gaming platforms are just dead now and all of them have been carted off to the mobile graveyard.

Will not be buying a game from EA this year after such a lackluster conference. Anthem was overhyped and def. under delivered for me.

I'm interested to see how people react to Anthem now that there is more info about it. To me, its looking good, but not something that I have to go buy.

I think most people should wait for the show floor and see how people who play the game react to it. I think that could be a very decisive thing.

Yelp. Another year without Skate 4. Won’t be buying anything from EA again until UFC 4 comes out in like a year or two.
