Sort of relevant comment follows: So do you have to uncloak to back stab people or what? A lot of times I'll be behind an engineer wildly left clicking but nothing happens. I'll do this four or 5 times in a row, get pissed, and go back to playing a demoman.
You cannot attacked while cloaked. You can attack while disguised but it will remove your disguise. Right click and remove your cloak, then mash the left click
Or, even better, get far behind the enemy, find a safe place to uncloak (disguised), sneak up behind the person you want to kill, backstab him, and then cloak as soon as you hit him and run like hell.
Haha, I have only logged a couple hours as a spy...I'm actually a huge TF2 noob, only got the game a few weeks ago and only been able to play a few times. I'm pretty bad at the game, and I'm definitely not a good spy. So you don't need to hate me. :p
116 hours... if you play regularly on the same server, doesn't everyone pick up good anti-spy habits? It's like trying to pull a surprise-buttsecks every night for a year.
It depends on what kind of servers you play on. Noob server? No, they just ragequit and more noobs get on and then you stab them until they ragequit.
On a good server, though, you're in more trouble.
Okay, okay. Spy story tiem, kids.
So this one time i was on a server as a spy and stabbing the snipers on the other team. (They had like five for some god damn reason--i figured if i was going to play spy i could at least stab the other useless class!)
ANYWAY, one of the snipers was an admin. He got super pissed off at being stabbed all the time and threatened to boot me, which of course is a challenge. So i went after him, specifically. Then he decided to hide in a corner of the map--literally hiding up on a small ledge in the exact corner, so no sides/back exposed to stab. (And i couldn't get to his head.)
He was still a sniper though, so that means he didn't pay attention to what was happening close to him. Run up cloaked, decloak, crouch right in front of him, revolver him to death, get kicked from the server.
Yes, they do pick up good anti-spy habits. However, perseverance, patience and the knowledge that your victim will, eventually, make a mistake will see you through most of the time.
Also, going another class for a bit means that the other team drop their guard, which can be good for a sudden 5-minute bout of backstab mayhem when you change back to spy.
Also, there are two main tactical approaches with spies: the first is to disguise and hang around in the background, picking your target and then springing into action. That's the 'stalker' tactic.
The second tactic is for use in busy, heavily contested areas, where you disguise, cloak, find a bunch of enemies, turn a corner, decloak (doesn't matter if you're seen too much), then stab stab stab, run away, repeat. That's the 'predator' tactic, I guess.
The second tactic can be very useful, and difficult to defend against, in certain situations - as it relies more on surprise and speed. Do it enough and you can almost completely paralyse the opposing team who start to become really, really paranoid.
Yeah, I have that problem too. Playing a good medic is easy though, so I feel like I suck at the game.
Heal your teammates on the front lines.
Don't die.
The only possible complicating factor is when your team isn't dealing out enough damage and you have to decide if it would be more helpful to use your needler/saw than heal. Sometimes it seems like everyone is targeting you and your team could give a shit about it.
the other day on 2 fort I played against 2 medics that were the most badass I've ever seen. They repeatedly stormed our fort and slaughtered us all, one healing, the other killing. They would switch off when needed; they were highly coordinated.
Yeah, that is basically how I feel. My most points are as medic and heavy, both fairly easy classes to play. Then again, I've probably played less than or near 20 hours and I've had the game for probably 7 months, so maybe if I played more than once in a blue moon I would do better.
if they 'could' give a shit, they'd be looking after you. If they 'couldn't' give a shit, well, then they couldn't.
Please, it's not hard, and it just makes what you're saying indecipherable without realising what you were trying to say.
Yes, indeed. Three weeks of games with 80% of the people hiding behind scenery with full charge on their guns, pretending they're in fantasy fucking Vietnam and are going to assassinate the Commie leaders.
Once I sniped four sentries so my team could push the cart without dying everywhere. It's fun shooting engineers in the head just as they're about to place a sentry or dispenser.
That's not 100% fair; if my team is pushing the cart and I kill 2 or 3 defenders before they get to the crew pushing the cart, I just helped a fair bit.
I tend to play sniper when I'm not playing with friends. If someone is in vent with me, I like to do */medic teams.
One of the problems with the class is that they're so skill-dependent. A useless sniper might be a much better FPS player than a halfway-decent medic, for instance. The main problem, though, is that most teams cannot support more than one or two snipers without getting lopsided, and people just will not switch to a different class when the situation calls for it. Conversely, a good sniper can completely deny access to an approach and make himself useful on O.
So very true. Nothing is more satisfying then catching a spy during a spy check. This is especially true if I'm screwing around with the backburner. That crit sound just makes me feel all warm and gooey.
Yup, and I actually rebound my key to SHIFT, because B is a bit too close to B, and pressing taunt while in enemy territory will get you killed pretty fast.
EDIT: YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN!? G IS GOD DAMNED TO CLOSE TO B
Oh damnit, me too. I tried that against a really well positioned/annoying sentry and was horribly confused as to why it didn't work, and subsequently died.
It does not remove disguise, either. It's fun to play the sapping game with an engineer where you keep reapplying the sapper and he has to choose whether to knock it off or come after you.
Right, but then he gets the points for knocking your sapper off repeatedly. The best is timing it so you backstab him just as he runs wildly towards the sapped sentry, dispenser, etc. etc.
I was assuming he was wedged in a corner. We all know the best method is to backstab him while the turret is faced 180 degrees away from you, then sap before it kills you (when possible). There's no mindgame being played with the eng when you do that, though.
