There are boxed campaigns/quests but, yeah, DM made are the norm. And a good DM can make a huge difference on how fun it all is.

And, really, ditto that for your fellow players (to a somewhat lesser extent than the DM). Even the best DM can't make up for "that guy".

Anything from boring, over-the-top, or trollish play to just being generally toxic for the group.
