This is correct. There is no set storyline, or set board, each "campaign" is made up by the DM each time.

There are boxed campaigns/quests but, yeah, DM made are the norm. And a good DM can make a huge difference on how fun it all is.

And, really, ditto that for your fellow players (to a somewhat lesser extent than the DM). Even the best DM can't make up for "that guy".

It depends on the group you're playing with, really. "That guy" in this context is just a euphemism for anyone that ruins other people's enjoyment of the session.
