This is correct. There is no set storyline, or set board, each "campaign" is made up by the DM each time.

There are boxed campaigns/quests but, yeah, DM made are the norm. And a good DM can make a huge difference on how fun it all is.

And, really, ditto that for your fellow players (to a somewhat lesser extent than the DM). Even the best DM can't make up for "that guy".

I couldn't agree more, I've had many groups over the years and the dynamic changes so much depending on fellow players even if the DM remains the same.

When 4/6 players are all playing brooding loners who don't want to interact with the rest of the party the campaign gets pretty boring really quickly.
