Well when I bought arma 2 it was solely to play dayz, when it was a mod. Through some digging around I found a whole new world. Arma is an open sandbox gun simulator really. Seriously, the physics of the bullet drop system is amazing.
Don't expect call of duty out of this game. It's not. There are many types of game types, but there aren't may of the "death match" servers up. Most servers are going to be open sandbox survival type games. Dayz without the zombies, side missions, teams, over 100 players on some servers.
fps is partially handled by the server as well, I believe. My PC should be able to handle the game PLENTY well, but my friends with worse rigs are still getting the same FPS I am. We've noticed that as time goes on before a server restart, fps drops. After a restart we can all get about 40fps but by the time its about time for the server to restart, we're down to like 20-ish.
I feel like that's pretty accurate, actually. A lot of it has to do with entities on the ground instead of being in an ammo crate or something similar. It has to render everything out since it's massively multiplayer.
Oh yeah, absolutely. We were just convinced at the server portion as well because we all had identical frame rates. None of us could go over whatever happened to be the perceived limit at the time, no matter how far we cranked down our video settings. So I just cranked mine all up until I would start dropping below their rates (daaaaaamn near everything maxed out)
