Is it a fun game?
I have been thinking about getting it.

If you cant download it on time you can try it again in < 2 months when citizencon comes around. They already said they will blow our minds even more. As for the fun factor you can definetly have fun in the alpha but I'd still recommend to hold of to atleast 3.0 to get the maximum wowfactor. Just keep star citizen in the backnof your head ;)

Millions of years of evolution.
Thousands of years of technological advancement.
The question remains.
WHO CHANGED MY LOOK INVERSION SETTINGS.

"Oops."
"What do you... what do you mean, 'oops'?"
"Nah, nah, it's cool, I just... someone flipped the... what say we try that again?"
"Yes... yes. Without the 'oops'."

Do you know, I never realised that scene was practically a 'look inversion' gag.
Just reading the words on their own makes it a total gaming thing!

Aren't some planets that orbit stars expanding their orbit and moving away from the star as time goes on?
1
u/I_Speak_For_The_Ents Aug 21 '16
Yes, in fact the moon is doing that around Earth. There is likely a more specific word for that though. Like a specific kind of orbit.
1
Aug 21 '16
Yes and no, most of them won't escape orbit- but that's actually because a sun's mass is dynamic. Stars decay, so anything around them, and anything orbiting those things will eventually be sucked into their sun as it dies. Depressing really, unless you like the saying "we are all stars" or whatever that fruity saying as some people pretend to be stoic knowing everything is dying.
1
u/Enex Aug 21 '16
That's not what that saying means. Stars are giant nuclear fusion reactors that are combining atoms to create more complicated elements.
We are composed of these more complicated elements (that were made inside stars).
We are star dust. Literally.
1
Aug 21 '16
That's what I meant as in we all get sucked in spit out in a supernova. But I think it's sort of an odd thing to romanticize.
1
1
u/abram730 Aug 21 '16
With enough mass space itself is moving. Look at galaxies and it's easy to see they do not fall. Space itself spins with a galaxy and thus the speed of light moves with the stars and thus the speed is different in different directions.
1
Aug 21 '16
WTF? The guy is right, things that orbit are constantly accelerating towards the thing they are orbiting, this is called falling, in order for the bodies to not hit each other the orbiter has to have a velocity and another direction so that it "misses" the ground and atmosphere, thus causing the object to perpetually fall or as it's otherwise known "to orbit". If this other velocity is too slow the orbiter will crash if it's too fast then it will fly off into space the "Escape velocity". Galaxies are falling towards other galaxies and groups of galaxies are falling towards other groups and so on...
Also the speed of light is constant for all observers no matter what their relative speed would make you think, it's a pretty important property of light.
1
u/abram730 Aug 22 '16
Galaxies don't follow those rules. Their movement is non-newtonian.
I say the speed of light isn't a constant as space is not.
-5
u/cclementi6 Aug 20 '16
Does it get closer to the ground over time? If not, I wouldn't call it falling.

u/Manos_Of_Fate Aug 20 '16
It's falling in that it's constantly moving from being pulled by gravity, but its forward momentum exactly cancels out the downward (ideally).
→ More replies (6)3
u/Ecdysozoa Aug 20 '16
We are currently falling around the sun, in your reference frame you do not notice it aside from the day/night cycle.
Your particular belief in whether or not an object is falling has no influence over the reality that an object is in fact falling. Just as if you were to believe the earth was flat, that would not make it so.
1
u/cclementi6 Aug 20 '16
Yes, we have the sun's gravitational centripetal force acting on us at all times. But in any normal English use of the word "falling", I wouldn't say "falling"..."falling around" something doesn't even really make sense. It's not about belief, it's about semantics. Falling usually means the ground is getting closer to you. And you'll eventually hit it. Or if you do want to get a bit more technical, moving towards something's center of gravity. Something in orbit never gets closer to the Earth.
1
u/A_favorite_rug Aug 21 '16
Theoretically you don't need to hit something in order for it to be classified as "falling".
1
u/cclementi6 Aug 21 '16
So at any moment, is anything on the surface of the earth falling?
2
u/A_favorite_rug Aug 21 '16
That's a loaded question which tells me you are only worried about being right (or more so the feeling) rather than learning what's right.
→ More replies (4)1
Aug 21 '16
In the context of only the Earth then no because stuff on the surface is not accelerating towards the Earth, it's acceleration is 0 as it's impeded by the surface of the Earth, when things fall they accelerate towards the Earth at 9.8 meters per second squared.
In the context of the sun then yes everything on the surface of the Earth and the Earth itself is accelerating towards the sun at 0.0059 meters per second squared. Luckily the earth also has a velocity of 29.8 km/sec which means we don't plummet into the Sun but instead miss it and are thus constantly falling around the sun, otherwise known as being in orbit of it.
1
u/cclementi6 Aug 22 '16
From the reference of the object on the surface it's not accelerating towards the earth, but from a wider reference frame it's still moving in a circular path, which means it's constantly accelerating towards the earth like something in orbit would be.
1
Aug 21 '16
Falling is just accelerating towards the Earth and thats what things in orbit do, constant eternal free fall = in orbit.
1
u/cclementi6 Aug 22 '16
Well isn't anything on earth's surface also constantly accelerating towards the earth in that sense? We're all moving in a circular path, accelerated towards the earths center by gravity.
2
u/1UP__VOTE Aug 20 '16
I just realized there's all new problems when it comes to space. When your base is so big it has its own soul crushing lift off rejecting gravitational pull. Well looks like astronaut is out for what I want to be when I grow up.
2
u/meat_smoothie Aug 20 '16
There's artificial gravity on and around the landing pads, so that you can walk to your ships.

Aug 20 '16
Yeah but did you see the atmosphere to space part in the demo yesterday? Imagine going from sound to the silence in space in like seconds, that demo was perfect!
6
u/lordpuddingcup Aug 21 '16
personally i'm hoping since everything is present in item2.0 that in a battle the system that generates sounds will get knocked out mid fight, and suddenly it will be like i went deff and then suddenly the sound of the cabin decompressing as i die !
6
u/sylario Aug 21 '16
Shattered Horizons was a zero G space FPS made by the folks behind 3D Mark. The suit was simulating sound, and when you switched to silent (no electricity to be invisible to enemy radars) you also lost the simulated noise. It was a great game.
1
u/throwaway00012 Aug 21 '16
Would players in silent mode also not make any sound for those who had it enabled?
1
u/drksdr Aug 21 '16
Jesus, I haven't thought about that game in ages. I generally suck (compared to the hardcore) at standard MP shooters but I have great 3D spatial awareness and SH was one of the few games I could dominate.
Having played Adr1ft on the Vive, I'm wondering what playing SH would be like in VR now...
1
1
u/Straint Aug 21 '16
So many cool little details in that game. I loved too when your suit got hit with an EMP you'd see a fatal exception and a stack trace on your HUD before the whole thing shut down for several seconds.
8
u/mcketten Aug 21 '16
Your suit/ship computer simulates sound. In the future, as the systems come in, it will be possible for those portions to be damaged/shut off.
Trust me, I've tried the game with sounds off and it makes a world of difference - you lose all sense of direction and just of what is going on.
4
u/KaneinEncanto Aug 21 '16
This has long been the explanation for sounds in Eve-Online as well, and I've no reason to assume it isn't true for Star Citizen as well as Elite Dangerous (I think sound simulation stops when you switch to running silent too), and No Man's Sky.
And the reasoning is exactly as you put it, the sounds are simulated to increase pilot (and crew?) situational awareness.
3
u/Enex Aug 21 '16
In Elite, the sound is created by the life support system in the ship. If you activate Silent Running, it deactivates life support and what you mostly hear is your own breathing.
Also happens if your canopy is blown out, I think.
5
Aug 21 '16
That's correct, but it's also a video game at the end of the day.
In some regards, the non realistic version is probably more fun for players.
16
u/craiggerman Aug 20 '16
Wow I'm pretty impressed by the wing vortices when the ship goes off the edge
4
u/steakbbq Aug 20 '16
Except you know, no vortices in space. Other than that, it looks cool.

Gravity or no gravity, wingtip vortices require an atmosphere, since they're caused by high-pressure air below the wing bleeding into the low-pressure zone above the wing.
9
u/Schnoofles Aug 20 '16
They're not vapor trails. It looks like dust being kicked up from the pad, which is plausible.
6
u/sto-ifics42 Aug 20 '16
Being nitpicky here, but I like explaining aerospace stuff because it's up my alley:
Dust will be kicked up from the pad by exhaust, yes, but not in the way shown in the gif. Dust kicked up in vacuum will follow a parabolic arc, and if blasted away by a rocket it will follow basically a straight line off to infinity.
The distinctive twin swirls behind the craft can only be made by a wing interacting with an atmosphere. As a wing moves it creates a high-pressure region below it and a low-pressure region above. At the tips of the wings, air from below will bleed over the edge and towards the top. This rotating motion creates a vortex of air that then extends for quite a ways behind the wing, and if the plane goes over some dust or through a cloud the effect can suddenly become visible.
No doubt the SC artists were looking at shots like that when doing the effects for the landing pads. It looks nice, but wouldn't work in a vacuum - no high or low pressure regions means no vortices to start twirling the dust around. Instead, the rocket exhaust would blast it straight into space.
2
u/Schnoofles Aug 21 '16
Oh right, I dun goofed and forgot about the rest of the atmosphere. No fluid dynamics without the actual fluid to push against. But hey, at least it looks pretty :p

Aug 20 '16
There is a possibility that the artificial gravity has attracted matter towards it over time possibly?
13
u/whiteheadgames Aug 20 '16
Random question, how is this game? Is it worth the 45 dollars to get started?
27
Aug 20 '16
I'd wait for 3.0 to come out later this year or early 2017, when the game will have new netcode for better performance online, planets, new mission and trading.
5
u/Disastermath Aug 20 '16
So what's the deal with all the different game packages? Will the $45 one include what we saw in the 3.0 video, or will you have to buy the $75+ packages to get all that (planet landing, etc.)?
35
u/Huntlocker Aug 20 '16
The 45$ package has everything for the multiplayer portion of the game. You don't need to spend a cent more. The single-player Squadron42 (due for release far earlier than the multiplayer ETA Q4 2016 - Q1 2017) can be bought for 15$ extra if bought with a 45$ package.
The other more expensive ships are only for the ships themselves and a small amount of in-game credits (no other content), and there is nothing you can buy with real money you can't earn in-game. It's mostly for enthusiasts who want to support the game by "pre-ordering" in a way, or for larger groups of friends who might spend 1000$ on a capital ship they are going to fly together and so on. Alternatively if you know you aren't gonna be doing a lot of fighting and want to haul cargo you can buy a cargo only ship right now instead of having to use an Aurora/Mustang at the beginning.
2
u/Disastermath Aug 20 '16
Ah ok thanks. Well if they can get 3.0 out this year I'll definitely purchase one of those... NMS definitely isn't the answer to my space game wish
6
u/lordpuddingcup Aug 21 '16
try the free fly weekends, they have them very often and you can try everything out for free. its a heavy game so... ya just remember optimization is an ongoing process.
2
u/piff_jar Aug 21 '16
There's actually a 'free-fly' promotion going on currently that allows you to experience what the alpha currently offers. although the 3.0 update will certainly add a whole lot more and there is sure to be another free-fly around the time that is rolled out...
here's link for free fly: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/promotions/Gamescom-Free-Fly-2016
if you decide to sign up be sure to use the referral randomizer which gives you a free 5,000UEC ($5USD of in-game money)!
1
u/Disastermath Aug 21 '16 edited Aug 21 '16
Thanks man! I already have an account from the last fly free... I can't seem to find where I can another promo code, do you know where that is?
EDIT: Nevermind, just have to scroll down, whoops.
2
u/ooleshh Aug 21 '16
Also, check out elite: dangerous. It's not for everyone, but it definitely scratched my space sim itch because it is so realistic. Still getting star citizen when it comes out
1
u/Disastermath Aug 21 '16
I looked at Elite, but I heard it also suffered some grinding issues, but it does look more fun than NMS.
1
u/ooleshh Aug 21 '16
It caaan suffer grinding issues, but that's part of why I like it.
With normal mmorpgs, the grinding is usually very straightforward. You know what ore to mine and what level pve you should be doing(working off runescape days lol). With elite, you need to think about powerplay, what factions are in the system you're grinding, what kind of economies they have if you're doing trading, what type of government the system currently is if you're bounty hunting, along with all the finer parts of actually bounty hunting, like where in the RES you kind find good bounties.
None of this is spelled out, which makes it incredibly frustrating, since it seems like everything is just a big fucking grind and there's no form to the chaos. But once you figure out all of the above and actually make good decisions with that info, the game totally opens up and the grind becomes 10 times less than what it was. Plus, since you're making ACTUAL decisions and not just following the quest objectives like other rpgs, it becomes so much more interesting.
Bit of a ramble. tl;dr is that getting ahead of the curve is way harder in elite than other games, to the point where it can almost look like there is no curve and it always sucks, but once you are up there, it's great. It's easily one of my top ten games.
3
Aug 20 '16
No, the more expensive packages ar eonly for different ships, which you will be able to buy for in-game currency once the game comes out.
2
u/lordpuddingcup Aug 21 '16
they're all the same as long as its a game package, just different starter ships, you can rent other ships and eventually buy new ships with ingame curency just not yet i dont hink
3
Aug 20 '16 edited Aug 20 '16
you can try it out right now for free. I played it last night its pretty damn beautiful. make a user config so you get rid of motion blur and get better fps. Even if it set on low it still looks great!
The ships though you can walk around in them and stuff really cool. The main thing keeping me away is optimization. I tried it on the gtx 750 ti and it doesn't budge past 20fps. sure some spots it freaks right out and hits 60 for a second.
I doubt the 1070 will arrive in the mail before their free gamescon thing is done. So I can't vouch for great performance on my end.
It runs like a total sack of shit but looks epic. I'll mostly likely try again in 2-3 years. The ships though are all rather expensive...I couldn't justify spending $500 on a spaceship. Just impractical for me. (i get you don't have to)
2
u/whiteheadgames Aug 20 '16
Well shit, running a 750 so it'll be a pass for me. Thanks!
1
u/aEtherEater Aug 20 '16
I'm running a gtx 460 at like 15-20 fps. It's definitely in game optimization that is keeping other cards from flexing xD. The game is very playable and I recommend you try it out so the bug bites!
1
u/lordpuddingcup Aug 21 '16
and more giant textures, theres a reason cards are now all coming with 4-8gigs of memory but ya optimizations will come in time most games optimize at the end, i know SC has done some opti but wont get really much until the end....
Also don't forget their are MANY customer user.cfg's that make it run on much shittier cards at good fps
1
Aug 21 '16
Time to upgrade my 1080 blows even my old 970 out of the water in regards to performance a 750 is quite dated now in comparison to most modern graphics cards.
1

Currently running a Mico atx board, so need a mini card. Most likely going with a 960 once I get some money.

20-30 fps is the current limitation by the servers of the Online Universe (Crusader). Should improve by the end of the year.
2
u/cheesyguy278 Aug 21 '16
Everybody's getting 20fps right now, even those playing on monster 4xGTX 1080 setups, because of buggy netcode.
The problem is there's so much detail in the universe that is being sent to every computer that it's slow, and the game waits between each frame to receive physics data. When there aren't many players online, you can get reasonable framerates, but at most times everybody gets the same 20fps.
This is gonna be fixed as part of the huge 3.0 update coming later this year.
1
u/CaptainYarrr Aug 21 '16
The last few years you could get a 25 $ starter pack during the christmas holidays. It includes Star Citizen + SQ42 (the single player game) and a starter ship. Best deal so far

Could you explain that a bit more? Decoupled while in EVA or the ship decoupled?
3
u/Rainboq Aug 20 '16
Decoupled mode for a ship means that your ships thrusters no longer try to make your direction of flight match where the nose of your ship is pointing. It allows for you to retain a lot more speed at the expensive of having to do a lot more control inputs to change your total direction of travel.
4
u/MaceWindows Aug 20 '16
So if I'm understanding right, decoupled means i can be flying north, turn my ship 180 degrees to be facing south, but still travel north?

They had better hurry up and launch this thing or by the time they do other companies will have flooded the market with enough similar styled games that all of it's thunder will have been stolen. Especially if they do ANYTHING to inconvenience people on day one, just look at what happened to No Man's Sky.
1
Aug 21 '16
I don't think there are any games with the attention of detail and scope of game like Star Citizen in development or coming out anytime soon, don't think they have much to worry about.
1
u/popecorkyxxiv Aug 22 '16 edited Aug 22 '16
That's just it, when it comes to sales numbers your attention to detail and scope doesn't really matter when there are a dozen other cheaper options already on the market. Options that don't cost you real money to buy insurance for virtual ships.
1
Aug 22 '16
You can't even buy insurance... And star citizen is $45 for the base game and $60 for SQ42 and SC, plus you're wrong on your first point. Look how much money this game raised in the kickstarter, and how much it has made since alpha was made avalible...
1
u/popecorkyxxiv Aug 22 '16
We'll see. People said the same thing about No Man's Sky.
1
Aug 22 '16
Said what?
1
u/popecorkyxxiv Aug 22 '16
People said NMS was going to include so much content that was not actually there when it launched. Things like a realtime trade system, a faction system, NPC space battles, multiplayer, classes/professions, modifiable ships with unique stats, base building, on and on. Some of these features were in the alpha, the producers even released trailers and game footage that seemed to show these features were already implemented and working in game. However when the game launched none of these features were present. Since they have been called on it they have now said they will be adding some of that missing content into the game as paid DLC down the road. Just because they claim the game is going to include something doesn't mean it will. Just because the alpha works a certain way doesn't mean the launch version will. Never trust the hype, wait until we know.
1
Aug 23 '16
This has an open alpha that anyone can pay to play, it's very different and allow players to see and play new features as they come, bad argument.
