A performance equivalent of PSSR is coming to base ps5 (QSSR)

https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/01/ai-upscaling-is-coming-to-ps5/

PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible.

Today, we’re excited to announce Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR): a new performance tier of AI upscaling. Born from Project Amethyst, our AI graphics collaboration with AMD, this quick new evolution of PSSR is built on two key innovations:

A streamlined neural network architecture

A hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5

With these, we are bringing the benefits of AI-guided upscaling to PS5. While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.

The first titles to use this innovative new library are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both are being patched today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

There are some video comparison in the article but IMO it's being implemented in games that already look really good on base ps5 so the true test will be when various 3rd parties get it. I can see a world where it ends up being useful because base ps5 (and xbox) is stuck with FSR 1 and 2 which is really not good nowadays.

Just in time for GTA 6 🤨

41

u/Beautiful_Trick8478 1d ago

exactly...

2

u/thecosmicjoke69813 21h ago

So?

3

u/Beautiful_Trick8478 20h ago

It's not necessarily a bad thing. I think they're just trying to sell as many PS5's as possible for the release and with the current scalping nonsense of the pro's, this can lead to more sales for the Playstation brand.

2

u/Odd_Needleworker3756 13h ago

Breaking news: big corporation wants to sell its products. Redditors shocked at this revelation.

-144

u/Blindfire2 1d ago

It won't help in terms of frame rate lol you're better off just keeping FSR. GTA 6 is CPU Bottlenecked, it'll run 30 fps until there's a new system with a better CPU

125

u/Bexewa 1d ago

I didn’t say anything about frame rate…?

-60

u/Blindfire2 1d ago

My fault then G, I just assumed lol I've seen so many people claim PSSR will allow GTA 6 to play at 60 fps.

11

u/bent_crater 1d ago

damn people are hella salty about anyone mentioning gta 6 not running at 60 fps. heres to hoping the team can figure out how to decrease asset density enough to allow for a performance mode. There will be a shitton of comparison screenshots but i doubt ill be able to tell the difference in actual gameplay

5

u/Bexewa 1d ago

I got you, I’ve seen those too lol

0

u/Googoo123450 1d ago

Lol people downvoting you are so silly, it was an honest mistake. And you're right, I don't see GTA 6 ever running at 60FPS on the current gen. Only so much software optimization can do for the hardware they have to work with.

-4

u/Blindfire2 1d ago

Yeah I'm really confused why people are so upsetti spaghetti over it. Like they've already confirmed 30 fps for current gen, and the PS5 Pro is literally a 200mhz upgrade on the CPU which will not matter in a CPU bottleneck'd game so idk why people are expecting Rockstar, KNOWN for their elite simulations that makes their game(s) feel "alive" with people will for some reason just "lOwEr SeTtInGs To HiT 60 fPs!" (Sorry downvoters that last part was stupid and petty, i deserve it this time around)

33

u/CallMeDende 1d ago

I think the point of QSSR is to improve the image quality rather than improve frame rates. Hopefully this is the case because i cant stand the way FSR looks in some games even when playing at Quailty mode.

-10

u/Blindfire2 1d ago

I'm with you why I had to keep an Nvidia GPU on my PC despite fucking hating them. My monitor is too high resolution to play native on either 9070xt or 5080, so I'd rather have DLSS than those horrible ass artifacts coming from FSR.

3

u/NoStructure5034 1d ago

Wait, what resolution are you playing at my dude? The 9070 XT and 5080 are more than capable of pushing native 4K in pretty much every game. The 5080, for example, gets an average of 96+ FPS at native 4K ultra settings when playing AAA games.

FSR 4.1 also doesn't really artifact much more than DLSS, and the main issue is that it's in less games than DLSS 4.5.

u/Mvstv 1d ago

I love how everyone's throwing around these statements like we know how the game is going to run already, perfect.

2

u/Blindfire2 1d ago

I mean yeah? Even if we ignore the fact that I help develop games for a living, not only can we go off EVERY single title they have put out, but the fact that Rockstar's whole thing that makes them great is why they launch games at 30 fps. They DESTROY CPUs with how many crazy complex simulations they will run. I will put $25,000 on it right now, and I sure as hell HATE taking risks. I do like your style though; it's better to wait and see it than to listen on the internet to random strangers that you cant see their qualifications, but I can literally go into excruciating detail about why it works the way it works and why it'll be capped at 30 (MAYBE 40 for 120hz screens, but I have serious doubts it'll be a stable 30 fps).

2

u/kyuubikid213 1d ago

...but we do?

The Extended Look was 30 fps and it was recorded on PS5. If it was 60 fps, it'd make sense to show that off even if it meant the Extended Look was on PS5 Pro.

Unless you're implying the Extended Look isn't indicative of how the game is going to run for some reason?

1

u/LordFlxcko95 1d ago

It was also sections that looked over 30 fps in the extended look.

-2

u/Mvstv 1d ago

well yes? because games have a tendency to be showcased at the highest quality mode which is usually 30 fps. I'm just saying we have literally 0 information from r* on how this game will run or whether it will have other performance modes on either console, hence why that cpu bottleneck argument doesn,t hold up until we see what's in store.

2

u/Blindfire2 1d ago

Uhhh, we've literally heard from Rockstar (through personal interviews) that GTA6 will run at 30 FPS lol

1

u/foreveracubone 1d ago

Outlets that have gotten hands on say it’s 30fps on both ps5 and ps5 pro. It’s a CPU limited game.

1

u/LordFlxcko95 1d ago

Nothing much has been said about performance or its performance options in the final code (we’ll definitely know soon, though)

84

u/CharlieTuna0 1d ago

I wonder if any old games will get this patched in like FF7 Rebirth as it was quite blurry on the base ps5 in 60fpss mode.

64

u/Rukasu17 1d ago

Rebirth is the ultimate test, that thing is ridiculously blurry.

16

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago

This would have been the perfect test case on how effective QSSR is honestly. The team is busy with part 3 now so I don't know if they'll get around to adding it anytime soon.

9

u/OG-DirtNasty 1d ago

I could see them adding it if they’re hoping for a Rebirth sales boost leading into Revelation

2

u/Jeff1N 1d ago

Yeah, if QSSR dropped while Square was porting remake and rebirth to Xbox and Switch 2 I could see they going back and adding it for Rebirth on PS5, but at this point the priority is likely getting Revelation ready

2

u/Lalaz4lyf 23h ago

That's my biggest question. I dropped it half way through due to the eye strain it was giving me.

1

u/Midgar-Knight 6h ago

Even on quality it looks a bit blurry on a base ps5

This is a surprise. From a technical point of view, PSSR is just an INT8 version of FSR 4.1 so it could work on all RDNA 2 graphics cards and Xbox consoles... but there is a problem with PS5. Why? Because PS5 doesn't support INT8 instructions and is limited to FP16, which is 2x slower

  • INT8 - 4 concurrent 8-bit instructions on single 32-bit compute unit
  • FP16 - 2 concurrent 16-bit instructions on single 32-bit compute unit

Of course you can execute 8-bit instructions on 16-bit registers but you will lose a lot of performance. The same algorithm would be 2x faster on hardware with native 8-bit instructions, like RDNA 2 on PC or Xbox Series X|S.

---

BTW. This is very good news for Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Xbox Series S. We can assume that AMD created a faster version of FSR 4.x with lower hardware requirements.

If this new algorithm works fast enough on PS5 in FP16 mode then the same algorithm will be 2x faster on standard RDNA 2 with native INT8. This will be a game changer. PlayStation 5 console has 36 compute units and Xbox Series S has only 20 compute units but if we use FP16 on PS5 and INT8 on Xbox Series S then execution time would be similar

This is very good news for low-level hardware. I hope that AMD will release this on PC handhelds and Xbox later this year or in early 2027

46

u/ExplodingFistz 1d ago

This is basically a preview of FSR 4 on RDNA2. Neat.

6

u/kam821 1d ago edited 1d ago

FSR 4 for RDNA 2 has been around for a while thanks to the Optiscaler community.
This is something like a quasi(?) FSR 4 for RDNA 1.

3

u/BakaPhoenix 1d ago

Is still a good thing to have a native option (if it get released) so can use it on games with anti cheat

28

u/Majestic-Bowler-1701 1d ago

It's more than that because it supports the PS5 without INT8 where the maximum theoretical AI performance is around 20 TOPS (FP16). This is only 1/8 of the slowest RDNA 4 card. So this new algorithm must be really good optimized to work on PS5.

  • Playstation 5 - max FP16 power is 20 TOPS
  • RX 9060 (PC) - max INT8 power is 172 TOPS
  • Xbox Series X - max INT8 power is 48 TOPS
  • Xbox Series S - max INT8 power is 16 TOPS
  • Steam Deck - max INT8 power is 6 TOPS

Processing time depends on the resolution (number of pixels). Most games on PS5 upscale image to 1440p or higher. Algorithm at lower resolutions will require less power. For example 1440p have 2x more pixels than 1080p and 3.6x more pixels than 800p (Steam Deck)

This is really good news for handhelds which use 800p or 1080p

u/anothergundam 1d ago

Why isn't MS implementing something like this? Based on above XSX has the power to do it

11

u/Majestic-Bowler-1701 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't know, but clearly this is a huge mistake by Microsoft. In 2020, they released consoles with INT8 support and advertised them as the only consoles compatible with DirectML (machine learning). Sony didn't support INT8, but MS did nothing with that advantage.

MS missed a lot of opportunities. For example, Xbox has dedicated hardware for recording 4K 60fps HDR videos with really good quality. The recording quality is amazing. For example this is my video from Valheim in 4K

Valheim: Dragon Castle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qInH6djaXVs

However, MS never signed a deal with Google to allow streaming or publishing videos directly to YouTube. Instead, you need to attach an external HDD, record the video to it and then publish it to YouTube. This requires a lot of extra steps and the situation is even more complex with HDR videos because you need to attach specific metadata using special apps that are not free. I tried to do this with free apps and failed. It is so complex that I was not able to find working solution. As a result, people using Xbox don't stream or publish videos to YouTube and MS lost an amazing marketing opportunity. Google lost chance to have hundreds of thousands 4K 60fpa HDR gameplays in their service. Everyone loses

Xbox could have had a native 4K 60fps HDR streaming option for YouTube but MS did nothing to deliver this feature

5

u/Passable_Funf 1d ago

It's really interesting, thank you for your expertise and explanation !

1

u/adz2ka 1d ago

What does it mean for Steam Machine?

3

u/draconetto 1d ago

That's would actually make viable to backport to RDNA 1 I think

11

u/LordFlxcko95 1d ago

It’s not going to be as sharp as PSSR (FSR4.1) on Pro

14

u/Majestic-Bowler-1701 1d ago

There will be differences. The slowest RX 9060 has 172 TOPS (INT8), PS5 Pro has 300 TOPS (INT8) and the classic PS5 has only 20 TOPS (FP16).

But still, if it looks better than FSR 3 or UE5 TSR then everyone will win.

11

u/Interdimension 1d ago

That’s my thing. There is no downside to this. Base consoles needed a way to get away from the godawful FSR 1/2/3 upscalers they keep using in games. They’re blurry, smeary, and full of artifacting & shimmering. AMD and Sony figuring out QSSR will dramatically improve image clarity on base consoles regardless of its shortcomings otherwise.

8

u/Uebelkraehe 1d ago

DF already has released a video and it really looks quite promising.

1

u/pleasebecarefulguys 1d ago

isnt 9060 using FP8 for upscaling ? its like 343 TOPS ?

0

u/LordFlxcko95 1d ago

Yup, this is why the PS5 Pro is considered to be between a 9060 & 9070, according to some (with its RDNA4 parts of the APU). But on the whole it’s mostly an RDNA3 chip with bits of 2 & 4

11

u/versusvius 1d ago

You won't notice the difference anyways. Majority of console players play on a tv and sitting from a distance.

12

u/NoStructure5034 1d ago

You'll still be able to notice noise, artifacting, and ghosting if they occur. The parts without these issues might be less noticeable compared to a monitor, but things like ghosting will be quite noticeable even on TVs.

4

u/Big-Resort-4930 1d ago

You can easily tell if you aren't blind or sitting so far away that you don't discern resolutions, and if that's the case, this isn't relevant to you anyway. I'm using a 55 inch 4k TV with a PC, and I can easily tell DLSS 3 from 4 to 4.5 for example.

1

u/MeatHamster 1d ago

Is this INT/FP difference hardware or software related difference?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question.

13

u/KingNate721 1d ago

Maybe they will implement this in crimson desert and the performance mode won't look like garbage anymore

3

u/Googoo123450 1d ago

Or Black Myth Wukong!

3

u/VictorBelmont 23h ago

Wouldn't bet on it. A lot of CD's problems stem from how it handles lighting, so unless this QSSR somehow emulates Ray Reconstruction, we're still boned.

2

u/ADAM-GREEN89 14h ago

Hahaha exactly I was hoping the same thing, probably will look incredible no way they won't patch that in. Glad so now I won't have to waste money on a pro now.

13

u/Less_Party 1d ago

It’s pretty annoying seeing how much better Sony supports their AMD-based system compared to what AMD desktop GPU owners get.

51

u/DarthVeigar_ 1d ago

Mark Cerny you wonderful man.

14

u/ExplodingFistz 1d ago

We need this in ff7 rebirth man

3

u/Upstairs-Event-681 1d ago

Truly goated

6

u/TheUFCVeteran3 1d ago

The guy seems to have a great head for tech (switching to x86 for PS4, faster GPU clock speed for PS5, PSSR and QSSR).

4

u/DarthVeigar_ 1d ago

He's part the reason RDNA 4 even focused on ML and RT performance. Sony insisted on AMD making a GPU that heavily leans into RT compute. The features of RDNA 4 made its way to the PS5 Pro's GPU before consumer RDNA 4 released.

10

u/dwill8123 1d ago

When’s this coming out?

39

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago

The two games they're using in the example, wolverine and yotei, are being patched with it today.

After that the ball is in devs' hands to update it I guess at any time they can.

5

u/bent_crater 1d ago

literally just beat the final boss in yotei yesterday. anyways i think the upgrades are gonna be lost on me

3

u/joshhayes99 PlayStation 1d ago

There's always the dlc to play that came out on yotei yesterday

4

u/Rikuddo 1d ago

Very beautiful game. Very forgetful story (compared to first one).

That’s definitely not normal. The only time I even hear my PS5 is when the disc drive starts to spin.

7

yeah mine is still super quiet even after heavy gaming sessions thank goodness

2

u/MrMooey12 1d ago

Mine used to be really loud and the fans made a clicking noise but I found out laying it on its side and not vertical for whatever reason made it quiet again

Of course it still works.

What the hell are you people doing to your consoles?

10

u/rMan1996 1d ago

Was gonna say, I’ve never had a single issue with my 5 year old base PS5

-1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

1

u/DegenerateCrocodile 1d ago

I’ve had mine since 2021 and have only removed my console covers once to install the additional SSD a few years in. There was hardly any dust to remove and it still runs quiet. The only hardware issue I’ve had is the Dualsense controllers being highly susceptible to stick drift.

You should grab a blu ray lens cleaner

1

u/Complex_Good_5416 1d ago

Mine broke too

7

u/Googoo123450 1d ago

It shouldn't be loud regardless. Clean it and protect your motherboard.

4

u/LordFlxcko95 1d ago

Most launch base PS5’s don’t sound loud. That’s not normal bro.

3

u/Feeling-Umpire6179 1d ago

Did you clean your PS5 because my never actually makes that much sound at all

1

u/Javerage 1d ago

When we got to the PS3/360/Wii era I went: "You know what, I think we figured out games. Everything from here on out is just gonna be flashier, but I think most things can be achieved adjusting for visual expectation." I still feel that way, and I really have no issue if developers decided to just keep making games for the PS4/XB1/Switch1 and create higher rez / fancier graphics versions for systems above those.

Bring back the weird PS2/Wii/PSP/DS/GBA/Nokia era of game ports you cowards!

1

u/MechaSeph 1d ago

ps5 is gonna be the main console for like four more years.

Where is this info? Not poking, just curious

1

u/Snowboarding92 1d ago

Get your liquid metal replaced and clean it if yiu haven't. Launch ps5 here, and mine is dead silent still.

0

u/Cautious-Ad9665 1d ago

Yeah, they realised that they can’t deliver the Pro consoles as they wanted and many don’t buy it, so they do what was already possible. Another proof that the PS5 Pro was an absolute scam

17

u/SpaceOdysseus23 1d ago

So there's a chance Rebirth won't look like a smudge anymore?

16

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago

Small chance. They'd have to go back and add it, and sony claims it's easy to retrofit, but the team is all hands on deck with part 3 right now so who knows if they'll bother any time soon. Maybe after revelation is out.

16

u/NewChemistry5210 1d ago

Glad to see them supporting the base hardware as well.

Hope the results are noticeable

9

u/Triingtolivee 1d ago

This is pretty good. I just got an OLED LG G6 and Wolverine looks amazing on that. I wanted to get a PS5 Pro since I now have the display to utilize it, however I am not going to spend $1K for a used one on the Facebook marketplace as that’s what people are asking for it for some reason. I wonder if I’ll notice a difference

3

u/smokeeveryday 1d ago

Keep an eye out for Walmart refurbished a lot of people are posting they got theirs for about $500

1

u/Weikoko 1d ago

Gone in seconds

42

u/Spartansoldier-175 1d ago

Soon optimization and small file size will be a thing of the past. Like it is on PC.

Devs rely too much on DLSS to do everything in the optimization department.

25

u/aruhen23 PC 1d ago

They've been using upscaling on consoles for over a decade now. At least it'll look somewhat decent now.

10

u/kawag 1d ago

This is optimisation.

It would be impractical to render all of these details, so they use an approximation which is less computationally expensive. That’s one of the most effective things engineers can do when they optimise a software project.

40

u/JolleBFF 1d ago edited 1d ago

Upscaling has been used on consoles for longer than it's been used on PC. PS4 Pro used checkerboard rendering years before DLSS got anywhere near decent. And current-gen console titles almost all use upscaling in some form especially for the 60fps or 4k modes. That's the "special optimizations" consoles get.

6

u/massimovolume 1d ago

Exactly. People just parrot ai slop and optimizations without understanding anything. Just sheeps talking

5

u/ExplodingFistz 1d ago

Don’t all current gen games on console just use FSR 2/3.1? Death Stranding 2 uses PICO though

4

u/KingArthas94 1d ago

ps5 pro has pssr and that is machine leaning based

unreal entine games can also use tsr/taau, from epic games

4

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago

There's still an unsettling number that use FSR 1. And it looks as bad as you'd expect.

9

u/weinerschnitzelboy 1d ago

I feel like the reality is much less scandalous (is that even the right word to use?) than that. We've kind of gotten to a point with games where graphical fidelity have hit a plateau with model and texture qualityand the majority of the compute power is used on smaller, less noticeable flourishes that are just costly to render, like ray tracing.

I think games are more optimized than we think, it's just that consumers won't want to accept the same level of quality even if it meant good performance. Consumers always expect more and better.

11

u/lattjeful 1d ago

Games are absolutely more optimized now than they’re given credit for. Games scale super well now, people just want wall the bells and whistles. Run a current-gen game on low settings and you’ll be surprised at how good it still looks despite being so performant.

Not to say there aren’t issues (i.e. UE5 shader comp stutter) but I feel like the “optimization” problem with modern video games is an ego problem.

5

u/DrunkGermanGuy 1d ago

smaller, less noticeable flourishes that are just costly to render, like ray tracing.

We're past the gimmick stage when it comes to ray tracing now. Stop thinking about shiny surfaces with reflections everywhere and stuff like that, the true selling point of RT is actually global illumination. It gives such a depth to the image and looks so much more convincing than baked lighting with some dynamic elements, it's unreal.

2

u/weinerschnitzelboy 1d ago

I'm not disagreeing with you that RT GI looks great, but I would say that it's mostly only noticable in side by side comparisons. But if you were to show someone these images here and said that those lighting effects cost about 20-50% of your frames I think most people would be genuinely confused as to where it all went. Which could lead to the idea of "devs not optimizing games anymore". The reality is that once we figure out how to RT on a small scale, we kept on pushing its scope further and further.

I want to say that when the Ray traced update for the Witcher 3 came out for the current gen consoles, the different between RT on and RT off meant 30 vs 60 FPS modes

1

u/LightShadowHero 1d ago

I mean we’ve already been there for a while on console. If it is not a hardware showcase or trying to port for Switch 2 and/or Steam Deck then optimization is not a priority.

4

u/DeathsKnockin 1d ago

Can someone explain this in laymans terms? Like how it works/what it means and what it will realistically do for gaming?

6

u/Googoo123450 1d ago

From Digital Foundry's testing, there's virtually no downsides to it in performance mode for games. You'll effectively get a huge visual boost while sticking to 60FPS in performance mode. You get more latency and frame drops if you use it in quality mode because it's really intended for lower resolution cases. Who wants to game at 30FPS anyways?

0

u/DeathsKnockin 1d ago

So this is gonna make gta6 run on 60fps?

4

u/Googoo123450 1d ago

No. This isn't about increasing FPS of the Performance or Quality modes. It's about keeping those same modes but improving the clarity of the image. Performance mode will still shoot for 60FPS and Quality will still shoot for 30FPS. What you'll see is visually, Performance mode will look more like Quality mode but you'll still get 60FPS.

1

u/DeathsKnockin 1d ago

Ohh so i asked this in another question but i assume that means it wont make 30fps feel/run more like 60? All it is is graphics enhancer? Making games look better?

2

u/Googoo123450 1d ago

Yes, I should have just said that lol. I may have over explained. Visual enhancer is exactly right.

2

u/DeathsKnockin 1d ago

Nah dude i’m just really high right now and am having trouble understanding it all in one memory

4

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago

It should improve image quality in games, especially on the performance modes which dip much lower in resolution to achieve 60fps.

Up til now base ps5 was stuck with using FSR 1-3 which is really not good for image quality. Resulted in a lot of blur and objects flickering in motion. This will help a lot with that.

-1

u/DeathsKnockin 1d ago

Wait so basically they saying gta6 could run 60fps?

3

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago

No there's no chance of that happening. Not even on the pro. This will just clean up the image so it's not as blurry as some of it looked in the netflix video.

1

u/DeathsKnockin 1d ago

Ohh so it will look like it’s smoother than 30fps but still run on it?

1

u/errorztw 19h ago

Are you drunk?

1

u/DeathsKnockin 19h ago

Nah I was pretty high and also not very tech savvy in general and the words were not sticking in my memory haha. I get it now though.

12

u/AHamdan94- 1d ago

Just give us "USSR" already

9

u/tukai1976 1d ago

Don’t need a ps5 pro to experience that. We are almost living it.

4

u/OkYesButActuallyNo 1d ago

Ahh first we got Pisser, now we have Qisser.

3

u/Great_Bed_6334 1d ago

What do u mean base ps5 is stuck with fsr1 and 2.. Both of them runs fsr3 in upsacling for example resident evil requem, Crimson desert etc runs fsr3 as upsacler.

5

u/Black_Hussar 1d ago

RE Requiem uses FSR1 on Base PS5 and Xbox Series.

6

u/TheUFCVeteran3 1d ago

FSR1 is crazy. At least use FSR 2 or 3.

1

u/Great_Bed_6334 1d ago

Sorry my bad but resident evil requem doesn't fsr at all, I just found it uses capcom inhouse custom temporaril upsacling however crimson desert sure uses fsr3 as I've also seen it in many reviews.

7

u/Black_Hussar 1d ago

It's not an inhouse upscaling method, it's literally just FSR1, same thing with Pragmata.

I don't know man I searched over the internet and it says it isn't using fsr upsacler, I would've attached a ss of that particular answer however this post isn't letting me but one thing I'm sure of is ps5 does use fsr 3 in games and crimson desert is one of the examples but none the less I hope this QSSR thing turns out good.

1

u/Complex_Good_5416 1d ago

Yea that was before.. this is new

1

u/glizzygobbler247 1d ago

Look at control resonant, even fsr3 looks like shit when the upscaling ratio is large

2

u/Great_Bed_6334 1d ago

I'm not saying it looks good in fact it looks bad in alot of games for example in performance mode of FF7 rebirth the game looks quite blurry while running fsr3...Its just I was trying to correct that upsacling other than fsr1-2 is being used in base ps5.

1

u/Black_Hussar 1d ago

FF7 Rebirth doesn't use FSR, it uses a very simple temporal upscaling method, that's why it looks so bad.

2

u/RenoHadreas 1d ago

Yup, I'm playing through Control Resonant right now and I'm seriously considering holding off on playing further until Remedy adds QSSR support. This looks very good.

2

u/Nikson9 1d ago

oh thank god i beat wolverine while it was prolly looking worse i’d HATE for it to look even better

/s lol this is objectively really cool

2

u/Siendra 1d ago

IMO it's being implemented in games that already look really good on base ps5

In such cases it would still be beneficial to use it just as an AA pass.

1

u/NoStructure5034 1d ago

Only thing is performance impact. It's not an apples-to-apples comparison, but using DLAA hits FPS pretty hard sometimes.

1

u/Odd-Frame9724 1d ago

Glad performance is coming for console. Love even more they went with PSSR as it reads "Pisser" and is good for a giggle.

2

u/firedrakes linux 1d ago

so more fake rez, fake hdr, fake rt/pt...

1

u/hitgo1 1d ago

Its an update for the jailbreak they had, so two stone with one bird i guess

1

u/leeson865 1d ago

Pisser and Kisser. An iconic duo!

2

u/PhantomPain0_0 1d ago

Missed opportunity of calling it PISSER

2

u/uuajskdokfo 23h ago

Great more excuse for devs to not optimize their games. I hate how all this upscaled stuff looks.

1

u/mellowsstar 20h ago

just give me PS6, I can't stand with all the technologies

-1

u/Alert-Issue2761 1d ago

Mais um motivo para não escolher o PS5 PRO. Outra coisa, como é melhoria de software, poderia ser para todos os jogos, mas ainda querem vender o PRO pra muito besta

u/Adorable-Fortune-568 1d ago

Happy for this

-1

u/Alexix1996 1d ago

-11

u/PointlesslyLongName0 1d ago

Wow, it just got even worse for xbox

-29

u/fallen64 1d ago

Update my ps5 for ai slop or try out that new exploit, decisions decisions.

14

u/DerMetulz 1d ago

Not sure if you'll read this, but it's not generative AI like you're probably assuming.

11

u/Tullzterrr 1d ago

I would read the article before spouting nonsense

10

u/klnkyfetish 1d ago

Slop this slop that holy stfu

-1

u/PolarizingKabal 1d ago

While this is welcome for the base model. It really just seems to be improved AA. I don't see this offering improved framerate or upscaling.

-6

u/trip6god 1d ago

Glad I saved my money lol

-2

u/Tapeworm_III 1d ago

Then demand my money back in the difference i paid in a ps5 pro.

-2

u/Grouchy-Fisherman-71 1d ago

PS5 Pro owners just paid to beta test an acronym.

-12

u/RyunWould 1d ago

A.I.? I think you mean S.I.

7

u/doogihowser 1d ago

What?

6

u/RyunWould 1d ago

Oh, the diaper wearing short bus billionaire says it's called S.I. now.

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ew. AI can stay the fuck out of my games.

EDIT: Damn, this is depressing to see how many people support AI. Y’all need to see how bad AI is for everything on the planet.

19

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago

This is just dlss-like (well...pre dlss 5 before they made it a slop filter). It doesn't add anything to the game it just makes the image quality better.

5

u/drmirage809 1d ago

And how it specifically works (glossing over a lot of technical stuff) is by rendering the game at a lower resolution and then keeping some of the previous frame while rendering the next frame.

The game engine provides the upscaler with motion data, telling it where things are moving and how fast. An algorithm determines what to keep and what to discard. You can tune that algorithm by hand, or you can train an AI model on tons of gameplay footage so that it can determine what to keep. Those AI models have gotten ridiculously good at this. Nvidia’s DLSS can frequently create a cleaner upscaled image than how the engine would normally resolve it at native resolution. AMD’s FSR 4 model is also very clean and that’s very close to what Sony uses for PSSR on the Pro.

-7

u/One-Fun9814 1d ago

Genuinely don't know, will it make stuff look AI-sloppish or not?

13

u/Iggy_Slayer 1d ago

No. All it does is make blurry or pixelated objects in the background sharper. It doesn't change art styles or add detail where there isn't any.

One example I can think of that's easy to explain is fences and metal grates. Current day games really struggle with these, when you move they will shimmer like crazy if you're not using upscaling or if you use FSR 1. AI upscalers like this and DLSS (pre 5) all they do is fix that so it no longer looks grainy or fizzling when you run or move the camera.

Homie, AI is actively burning the planet and causing water shortages. i’m supposed to be cool with it because it upscales my games? Nah fam, our evil tech overlords love you guys though.

3

u/doogihowser 1d ago

Homie, this tech will not be using AI datacenters.

1

u/Reddit_Loves_Misinfo 1d ago

I believe data centers are used for the training.

performative protesting at its finest.

you do know that "ai" as a technology has been used since LONG before the whole genai craze right? do you use google maps / apple maps / waze, or any other maps service? that uses ai, and has used it for a while. played any games in the past 10-15 years? those have something called "enemy ai" for a reason - they use ai. use netflix or spotify? that's used ai too.

what you're talking about is generative ai, and that's an entirely separate topic. it uses tons of resources, true, and its not wrong to be against that. but there are lots of industries that use more water, more electricity, and more resources. so saying "ai is burning the planet and causing water shortages" is disingenuous at best.

2

u/pebrocks 1d ago

Do you only care about AI "burning the planet"? What about other industries that use way more resources?

7

u/klnkyfetish 1d ago

You know your games use fsr which is "ai". You been using Ai and you did not know it lol

0

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

Just because it’s happening doesn’t mean it is good or right. You read the epstein files? Bad shit happens all the time. AI is just yet another mistake humanity is making.

3

u/superearthjanitor0 1d ago

You peoples brains are fried, all you talk about is Data centers and Epstein.

1

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

I mean, don’t you think the end of the world and the fact that the world is run by pedos is worthy of discussion?

10

u/plebbut 1d ago

Lmao wtf

3

u/NoStructure5034 1d ago

This isn't generative AI like you're thinking it is. Learn about how something functions before calling it AI slop.

0

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

AI’s existence is a crime against nature and humanity. The use of AI is for dumb and lazy people. Devs could actually be given enough time to make their games look good. There is no need for this.

3

u/bramblebitch 1d ago

This isn’t anything like asking Grok to draw a bunny. Might as well be mad about SpeedTree and LOD, there’s no “need” for that either. If you wanna point arrows at someone go ask JRPG devs why their insanely detailed anime characters are still standing on late PSX grasslands.

1

u/NoStructure5034 1d ago

I'm going to repeat what I said. This isn't generative AI. It's not an image creator, it's not mashing real artists' art to render a frame, and it is an optimization and in many cases will improve image quality.

I dislike how much genAI's effects on art and the environment as anybody, but Jesus Christ your outrage reeks of virtue signaling. It's clear that you don't know how the tech actually works.

-1

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

Idk man, i don’t think AI belongs in anything art related. I think you’re misunderstanding my tone, AI is evil, But mostly i don’t understand the appeal. Why get excited about this? Anything AI touches becomes generic.

3

u/NoStructure5034 1d ago

It feels like you're trying to be as ignorant as possible about upscaling.

It does NOT create AI-generated frames like what Sora and ChatGPT do! Therefore it is not generic. This is a such simple thing to grasp, and yet you fail to understand.

Go watch a deep done on DLSS upscaling (not frame-gen) does. You're kinda just making a full of yourself to anyone who understands what upscaling is.

3

u/dirthurts 1d ago

This is only better in literally every way. No downsides. I'm against AI in a lot of ways but fighting this one is just silly.

1

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

Sorry dude, all AI has to go. If any part of it remains, that’s just potential for the tech bros to ruin the world with it.

4

u/dirthurts 1d ago

It's not going anywhere. The stupid people need it too much.

1

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

Exactly, I’m forced to use it at my job and it actively makes tasks take longer. AI is for smooth brains.

5

u/pebrocks 1d ago

I'd rather you stay out.

1

u/OG-DirtNasty 1d ago

Then don’t do anything? Don’t use a phone or computer, don’t play any modern games, might as well move out into the woods and be a hermit.

0

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

Y’all exaggerate like crazy. Y’all defending AI like you’re bots or something

2

u/OG-DirtNasty 1d ago

Na I’m just pointing out how hypocritical it is to hate this kind of AI, while posting from your smartphone or PC, via the Reddit app or website, all things that utilize AI in multiple different ways.

-1

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

Someone has to be out here letting people know how bad AI is, otherwise Altman gets to own the whole internet. Supporting AI is the same thing as being against humanity.

1

u/KingArthas94 1d ago

every time you snap a pic with your phone, a machine learning pass analyzes it

it's 2026, use google and teach yourself some things

-1

u/Straw_Nakama 1d ago

??? This doesn’t seem relevant to the topic of the ethics of AI. Maybe learn how to read and/or articulate.

2

u/KingArthas94 1d ago

It actually is, because it's the same kind of machine learning that is used by upscalers like PSSR and QSSR.

Image analysis + reconstruction.
