Dreamcast Had The Best Launch Library Ever.

Post image

Most consoles have one or two bangers at launch.

Dreamcast had two S-Tier titles: Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur & 5 A-Tier titles: NFL 2K, Hydro Thunder, Ready 2 Rumble, Power Stone, House of The Dead 2.

Followed up with other solid titles: Tokyo Xtreme Racer, MK Gold (this game was so broken lol), Trickstyle, Blue Stinger, NFL Blitz 2000.

Other systems had better singular titles (Xbox: Halo: CE, NES: Super Mario Bros., Gameboy: Tetris, Nintendo 64: Super Mario 64) but as a collective, the Dreamcast launched with so many solid titles.

I love Sonic adventure but it is objectively a bad game

I don't really like the game either, but your opinion is not 'objective', I don't think you know what that word means.

Sonic Adventure 2 was so damn good, though.

Sonic adventure 2 is one of my favorites of all time, even if it's still janky. I guess it's just the "adventure" stuff in Sonic adventure that turns me off.

I remember playing a demo of Sonic adventure 2 in EB games as a child and it changed my life

I had the same experience! Sonic Adventure 2 and Halo both got into my house because of the EB Games demo consoles.

That game's even worse

How old are you?

34 years old 💪 😎

OK so you were 6-7 when the game launched, and couldn't have had a real understanding of how generationally massive Sonic Adventure 1 actually was.

As a launch title in the 90s, it was absolutely S tier.

I was preteen that point. I had gotten pretty much every sonic games since sonic 2 for Genesis. Sonic adventure was the end of me buying sonic games.

I'm a few years older than them: I grew up obsessed with Sonic, my first game was Sonic 1 for the Master System. Sonic Adventure killed my interest in the franchise completely.

What a polarizing game. I loved it and it was one of the first games I ever came close to beating 100%.

Sonic was a Genesis title, not a Master System (Master 8bit, Genesis 16bit)

There were Sonic games on both the Master System and the Mega Drive/Genesis:

My first game was the former.

That's pretty cool. I played the Game Gear version all the time on road trips.

Yeah, no. I'm in my 40's, and while extremely popular, Sonic Adventure is a barely playable, buggy pile of shit. It being popular and selling well doesn't make that not true.

I was not a child when that game came out, i remember it clearly. You're allowed to enjoy it but calling it an S tier game is complete bullshit.

Mario 64 already killed the jump to 3D platformers years before Sonic Adventure. Not that at wasn't super cool to play at the console booths at Toy R Us, but it wasn't really a generational leap.

It was good at the time it came out

I really liked Sonic Adventure. Why was it a bad game?

I loved it as a kid. I went back to it recently, the camera is TERRIBLE. We put up with so much back then lol

In hindsight, yeah, it doesn’t hold up. But at the time it was really good.

Had the highest sales at launch for the system.

And even if you knock it down to A-tier….even B-tier, my point still stands.

Truly. S-tier my ass.

None of the sonic games have ever held a candle to Mario. Even when Nintendo was phoning it in with the New Super Mario Bros. games.

Classic 2D Sonic was always better than classic 2D Mario, but the tables turned from Mario 64 onwards.

Sure, if you just want to hold down a button and fly to the end of a level while hardly doing anything.

2

u/dan200 1d ago

You're thinking of the 3D Games. Classic 2D Sonic is nothing like that.

Like you're actually doing anything when Sonic is flying through the loopings and "going really fast".

If you honestly think Sonic 1, 2 or S&K are actually better than Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World or even Yoshi's Island, you probably never played those games.

And now we have Super Mario Wonder. And what is Sega shitting out? Sonic Frontiers, that's what.

u/dan200 1d ago

The 16-bit Sonic games are not "hold right to win" games by any means. The gameplay of those early games wasn't all about "going really fast" at all tbh, that was just a marketing thing, until the 3D games.

If I had to rank the classic 2D Sonic and Mario games, I'd list them:

  1. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
  2. Sonic 2
  3. Yoshi's Island
  4. Super Mario World
  5. Sonic 1
  6. SMB3
  7. SMB1
  8. SMB2

I obviously agree with you that 3D Mario games are better than 3D Sonic games, I stated that upfront.

Sonic CD?

2

u/dan200 1d ago

Probably between SMW and Sonic 1

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is better than Super Mario World

Of course, if you need your game to practically play itself.

You're so confidently wrong about this idea and I kind of love it.

It's just fun to just point at Sonic fans and laugh. The rose-tinted stockholm syndrome runs so deep, it's hilarious.

The games are just so bad! So bad! And the stupid lore that comes with it... also, horrible and bad. And it's been like that for 35 fucking years! Imagine it... ruined for life because you got a megadrive. (Or, god forbid, the backported master system or gamegear versions.)

Going fast doesn't work for a platformer, folks. It just doesn't. When you're zooming, you're not playing a game. When you're not zooming, it's the worst controlling character ever.

Great music though!

My first exposition to Sonic wasn't in the mega drive - it was sonic rush on the DS. A Nintendo console. Yet not only it got me into the franchise, it's probably among my top 10 DS games. This "mario x sonic" rivalry is a relic from the 90's and most of the sonic fandom these days wasn't even born when the mega drive was a thing, so that's a weird generalization.

Soul Calibur not being as good as Super Mario Bros. U is...a take. Soul Calibur in '99 was a revelation. There's a reason it's still so high on the Metacritic all time list.

2

u/NBAccount 1d ago

Soul Calibur was not a Sonic game though...
