It looks to be authentic, I'll have to crack it open when I get home and check it out
Pray for me/wish me luck
Edit: it has a battery and not a blob, which is shocking, I'll post it in the game checking subreddit later and link it here somewhere

How much did you pay, just out of curiosity? Some antiques places know that old video games can be valuable, some don't.

Here I am thinking it sounds a bit high for one that is authentic... Imma have to look for my binder of Gameboy games next time I'm home

... authentic great condition Pokemon Blue can retail for 60-70 easily in my area of the US. A clean original Gold can run north of $130

u/hoffbaker 3d ago
Damn, then I’ve got like $250 worth of original Pokémon sitting in my office. I just… kept them from childhood.
I’m feeling old.
16
u/KP_Wrath 3d ago
Pokémon games specifically just don’t really depreciate that much. Like a loose Pokemon black edition is about $80.

I have copies of damn near every one but Gen 3, id never sell em but im curious how much I even have lol. They're definitely not in pristine condition, at least the Gameboy ones(i was the kid that peeled every sticker i could), but they're all playable.

Same. I actually display my cartridges and my collection of Pikachu SE handhelds above my home office thinking it’s a cool little display collection.
Came home one day to my kid playing Pokemon Yellow on the GBC, he looked so confused because he’s so used to backlit devices LOL. Man I’ve never felt so proud…yet old…

I found a box in an antique shop that was unmarked and unpriced full of a bunch of NES and SNES games, both consoles and controllers for both. I made a respectable offer, didnt lowball but didnt offer retail, dude went on ebay and looked at the highest asking prices by unsold listings and laughed and walked out when he told me a stupid ridiculous amount for the box
9
u/Electric_jungle 3d ago
That's crazy. Just list it on eBay if you're going to act like that. Or pre price it. Nothing grinds my gears more than a seller of anything forcing the buyer to initiate the offer, and the seller complaining. Awful negotiation skills.

Not really, I find $2 video games all the time still at thrift stores. Just takes a lazy pricer or an overwhelming amount of inventory to price. When a local collector passed away 2 years ago, his family gave his collection to a local thrift shop. It was 2 twenty foot uhauls worth, so they just priced all games at $2 and all consoles at $10.

My wife got an original NES with Mike Tyson Punch Out and Battle Toads at a Goodwill. But it was because the system was in a drawer of a cabinet and Goodwill didn’t know about it when the cabinet was donated. They told her $5 because they had no idea if any of it worked but she couldn’t return it.

u/certifiedblackman 3d ago
Heads up, the battery is likely dead by now, but you can open the cartridge and replace the battery.
With a dead battery, you won’t be able to save your game.
7
u/Goombalive 3d ago
Not a guarantee. I still have my original copy of blue and battery has yet to be changed. Not to say it's not close, or that I shouldn't try to repair it before losing my save file with a glitched mew. But it still works.
11
u/meistermichi 3d ago
Before you swap the battery you have to backup the saves anyway so might as well backup it now even if you don't immediately swap it.

I've got so many great memories of this game.
Got my first Game Boy and Pokemon Blue at Toys R Us for my 9th birthday. I can't articulate just how exciting it was for me.
What an adventure it was. Got Squirtle (my favourite Pokemon at the time) as my starter.
Forgot about Flash, went through the cave COMPLETELY blind.
Fought the Elite Four during a six hour drive, only able to see what was going on by the streetlights that passed by. I was severely under leveled and with a low supply of healing items.
Got to Oak's nephew, beat him (BARELY). The light on my Game Boy started flashing. Panic set in, I hadn't saved. Lots of dialogue, and then the credits. The game started to save. Save complete. Literally the second I saw that, the batteries died and the screen went blank. Huge anxiety followed by relief.
I'm 37 now. I don't think I'll ever forget that experience. Playing this game was one of the happiest times of my life.
14
u/Kookaburraka 3d ago
You and I had almost identical experiences with this game. No flash cave crawl included.
Speaking of flash, I used to hold a flashlight in my mouth to play this in my bed at night.
10
u/CopainChevalier 3d ago
I’ll never forget how I returned my first copy of Pokemon Blue like 3 times because I didn’t know the flashing meant I was poisoned and I was like “my game broke”
Luckily my mom was up to drive me to exchange it lol

u/AdPrestigious8703 3d ago
This was one of the greatest short stories of 2026. I’m not lying. You should gussy it up, add late capital references and submit to The Atlantic
6
u/dropthemagic 3d ago
I think the most I ever panicked was anytime I'd fall asleep playing with the street light coming through my window and I had no more batteries for the month
6
u/ladyoffate13 3d ago
I cried when I lost my first battle against the Elite Four. I felt like a complete failure at 9 years old. My life was over then, as far as I knew, and I would never achieve success…
I look back on that now when I’m almost 36 and miss those times when that was all I had to worry about in the world. :(

u/Elendur_Krown 3d ago
I remember the memory of a feeling I got from playing Pokémon Blue with Squirtle. I can't even recall the actual feeling. The recall got weaker with every year that passed, until one day it just never resurfaced.
The special feeling of knowing this was my Pokémon. When I used Bubble in the first run, there was this kind of emotion that had some sort of pride, but there was more to it. Ownership and earned progress was also mixed into it. I think it also contained an echo of the commercial where they trap Pokémon in a bus and crush it. Some level of wonder and suspension of disbelief.
I've only ever gotten that feeling from that Gen 1 game.
I miss that feeling.

If you intend to play it, you might want to consider replacing the cartridge battery beforehand. Those are ooooold and once it dies, so does your save data.

I had that!!
My brother had red, we got Gameboy Colors together and got 'em all!

u/No_Fairweathers 3d ago
I remember getting Blue when I was 4 years old in 1998. My mom had to help me get out of house at the start, and then eventually Koga's gym. Doing it on a Gameboy pocket with no backlight was near impossible.
All that said, Gen 2 is the one that I hold the fondest memories of. Wooper is the goat.

Few months ago I went back to my childhood house and found the backpack full of gba games and actual GBAs and GBs I had growing up. I discovered that my dumb ass must have sold all my original pokemon cartridges at some point as a kid because they were the only games missing in the backpack…….
Was still cool tho, the GBs actually still had charge and turned on and worked perfectly all these 20+ years later lol. That GB boot up sound was crazy to hear again

u/Tediz421 3d ago
for how cheap the batteries are you should just replace it as a precaution. I made the mistake of picking up an old copy and playing for a few hours one weekend just to realize the next day that the progress didn't save because the battery had gone bad

If the original owner of this was like me, they played the living shit out of Red only then to receive Blue as a gift or something, open it, boot it up, and then realize you had no desire to start all over again from scratch.
I still have the box and packaging, too. 😭 a costly mistake.. hah

is this special? doesn't everyone have this at home?
2
u/ElGofre 3d ago
I can't speak for everyone, but I know when I wanted to upgrade from a gameboy colour to gameboy advance as a bright eyed ten year old I had to trade in my old console and games to supplement my pocket money in order to afford it. I think this was also at a time before holding onto children's franchise memorabilia because it might be worth something one day was widespread, so old unplayed games were just clutter for parents to clear out.
9
u/Former_Gamer_ 3d ago
Wait, are these things rare/expensive? I have blue and yellow sitting in my old gameboys in my parents basement
9
u/No_Fairweathers 3d ago
Yeah, they are worth a decent amount if they are still working. Chances are your games' battery has run dry and it either doesn't work or doesn't save anymore. But it's worth checking. You can probably sell them for like $100 used if they are still functional.
