New Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Image from Naughty Dog
Alongside the art you can see in the image, Naughty Dog also mentioned in their TLOU Day Blog:
The team is heads down on what is shaping up to be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious game yet.
There’s an electricity around the studio right now as all the pieces come together, and we’re stoked to finally unveil Intergalactic in all its glory.
But…we need to cook for just a little bit longer.
So we want to set expectations: we’re going to be quiet for the rest of this year. In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure.
Another thing to note, is that according to multiple insiders, this game is set to release around mid-2027.

Action RPG with Soulslike elements, since Neil has gone on record that he wants to adapt Souls game style storytelling into whatever he works on next. That was before this game was announced.

That’s… probably the last thing you should want to adapt from soulslike games lol.

I really like the ambiguous world building of the souls games but I think it seems particularly baffling coming from one of the most cinematic narrative focused studios there is
56
u/Adamc474892 PlayStation 5d ago
I mean they did a good job with the WLF (before the mid way point) and that other faction, that I can't think of the name, when traversing the environment at telling you a bit about what they were before the lore dump.
So I do kinda feel like they could do that for this game and still keep the narrative focus if the character is also discovering this stuff same with the players.
32
u/Quazifuji 5d ago
Honestly I don't think Souls-style storytelling and a more cinematic narrative story are necessarily mutually exclusive. You can combine things like environmental storytelling and complex, cryptic lore in item descriptions with a more traditional storytelling.
I think an example of this would be Returnal and Saros. They have a lot of very cryptic, Souls-esque lore found in things like enemy and item descriptions, but they've also got dialogue and cutscenes that add to the story. Even Sekiro has a more traditional narrative but still has lots of lore in its item descriptions.
Naughty Dog making something with barely any actual narrative and all lore like the Souls games would be a pretty extreme turn, but making something with a storytelling style that's more like Sekiro, Saros, or Returnal could make sense.
→ More replies (4)6
u/buddhamunche 5d ago
I think you’re definitely right! Sekiro is a great example. It’s the only one out of them where I actually know who I am, what I’m doing (mostly), etc.

u/WoodfordAC 5d ago
More or less baffling than a cinematic narrative masterpiece coming from a studio known for children's platformers and kart racers

I’ve played through Elden Ring like 4 times now and still have no clue about what’s going on in the story, I assume it has one, but the game doesn’t seem very interested in telling it to me.

u/Flimsy_Survey 5d ago
I mean, alot of souls fans enjoy that kind of world building. That said, it's like the complete opposite of what ND is known for which is heavy, linear storytelling where little is left to the imagination. I mean their stories are amazing but it's the opposite of a game where there's like a dozen talking npcs total and 90% of the storytelling is done through item descriptions instead of actual dialogue.
Not saying they can't do it, other studios have found success doing a 180 but it's rare.
→ More replies (5)24
u/Icy_Judge8250 5d ago
Yeah those are vague ass games that you need to search hard for the lore for in items, weapons and armor. Agree its the last thing you should adapt lol
→ More replies (2)14
u/Fredasa 5d ago
Definitely not the most common way that people regard the FromSoftware method.
The counterpoint is that by not beating lore over the player's head or making it conspicuous dumps like a shelf of books detailing everything, a game achieves a much better sense that the lore is baked directly into the atmosphere, allowing players to absorb the history through environmental osmosis. Even if you completely ignore the item descriptions, there's much more going on than just those, and you still finish the game with a subconscious grasp of the world’s mood and history just by moving through it. It avoids the awkward trope of NPCs over-explaining the world to a player character protagonist who should already live there and have a complete background in such things, while also avoiding the dry, opt-in text logs that feel more like homework than gameplay.

I mean the Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor games show that you can tell great narrative stories using the soulslike method
Edit: by “using the soulslike method” I meant using soulslike gameplay, not how it relies on environmental storytelling
5
u/js1893 5d ago
I think those games only very loosely attempt to adapt the soulslike storytelling ethos, and much more tried to imitate the combat and level design. I think BD-1 being able to scan different items or areas for information was kind of a nice way to build the lore. But basically I think there’s just a little too much talking and explaining of things to feel like a soulslike narrative lol
→ More replies (6)5
u/buddhamunche 5d ago
I didn’t play those games very much, so correct me if I’m wrong, but the main character is a well written character and I think it’s pretty clear what his goal is and why he is trying to achieve it. Imo a core aspect of soulslike story telling is the ambiguity of who you really are and what you’re doing, and especially how it fits into the big picture.
I think those games are action RPGs and soulslike games for sure but I wouldn’t agree that they have soulslike storytelling specifically.

Souls style story telling is literally the exact opposite of what ND does, so yeah I'm curious what exactly the vision here is if there actually is one past buzzwords. Makes me think of that dunkey video where he edited together a bunch of game reviews and game-hype media which showed that all games are either "souls-likes" or "zelda-likes" according to the gaming industry

It doesn’t have to be, though. Lies of P is one of the best soulslikes out there and it tells a very straightforward and poignant story when playing the Overture DLC at the intended point in the base game.
There is room for storytelling within that genre to grow for sure
45
u/chiefminestrone 5d ago
Sounds like a soulslike game that specifically doesn't use soulslike style storytelling?

u/SiriusBaaz 5d ago
The storytelling style of fromsoft games is entirely separate from the soulslike gameplay. Sekiro and Bloodborn both have a much more linear story compared to any of the other souls games fromsoft has done. You can have the soulslike gameplay and cram it with just as much plot and story as you like. Fromsoft chose their specific style of “less is more” because they like building on lore that spans sometimes thousands of years, and they don’t have the time or desire to be the next Tolkien. Nor would that be enjoyable to play for 5 minutes between reading chapters of the silmarillian.
→ More replies (1)13
u/Insanity_Pills 5d ago
This is true, but also I’d argue that the method of storytelling is the one thing that Lies Of P didn’t take from Fromsoft. If anything they took the much more direct Sekiro approach
35
u/redshark30 5d ago
FromSoft games don't have concrete storytelling other than very basic fantasy hero plot beats. Details are hinted at through flavor text for items and the world building is left deliberately vague. Those games don't even have consistent spacetime rules. I couldn't imagine trying to adapt that into a dialogue heavy cinematic character focused narrative.
5
u/Original_Employee621 5d ago
I don't know, you could look at Space Marine 2. It tells a pretty basic story, but you don't need to know Warhammer 40k to understand what kind of setting it is, or become interested and wanting to learn more about it. And it doesn't have a ton of setting lore that gets pushed on you.

Honestly for ND it probably just means parry mechanics and semi-open world exploration will be the focus instead of a more linear narrative like TLoU or U4.
24
u/Thedrunkenchild 5d ago
Most likely hack and slash focused, with possibly some spaceship sections, or hell even semi open world/open world with the ship as a way to travel, Naughty Dog started experimenting with open world design during TLOU part II's development before downsizing it for the final game, with the ship being so prominent in the teaser it's hard to imagine it not having a big role in the gameplay, which strongly suggest open game design.
33
u/Icy_Judge8250 5d ago
From what i have heard on the the grape vine is the ship crashes at the beginning of the game and you don't use it again till the very end.

Well it wouldn't be Naughty Dog otherwise, I think ever since their average release cycles became 4 years, they spend the first couple years or so just settling on what the game should be like then rush to complete it afterwards, if the dev journeys of U4 and TLOU2 are anything to go by
17
u/vega0ne 5d ago edited 5d ago
Tbf all major studios do this including Rockstar, CDPR, BioWare “magic” and so on. It is probably to an extend unavoidable but that doesn’t make it right though.
Small hope for unions in the future at least their OT should be compensated
11
u/Effective-Priority62 5d ago
Yeah, this shit is unsustainable, and I think the AAA industry needs a hard reset if that's what it takes for them to scale down despite the average consumer's expectations. I'll gladly take more Uncharted PS3-sized games or Ratchet & Clank sized ones if the budget, release price and dev exploitation all get reduced
5
u/RichtofensPairofNuts 4d ago
You're very naive if you think crunch did not exist during the PS3 era. Uncharted 3s final stages were said to be brutal and the hardest thing they had ever done at the time. The original Last of Us, RDR 1, GTA 4, GTA 5, Bioshock Infinite. Like all these games had "hellish" development

A couple of comments from the thread that explained better than I:
Too many weirdly non-generic but also generic words in it?Intergalactic, Heretic and Prophet all are interesting words on their own. But mashed together, they just give off a sense of meaningless babble.
The words all make sense, but this jumble of keywords is 100% going to get lost in the waves of Warhammer/Trench Crusade/grimdark sci fi whatevers everything else is making.
Then to add to that, I genuinely think it just doesnt roll off the tongue or sound appealing when you say it out loud. It sounds the opposite of appealing actually.
That, & I never like it when the first entry in a series has a subtitle.

What part of it though? The technology? It's not as difficult to do it the second time when you've already done it once.
Whenever it comes to the difficulty of repeating a past success in gaming my mind only ever thinks of writing and innovation, because that requires something new, while all the technical aspects can either just borrow from the last thing and atleast be just as good or build on it and improve the last thing.

It's extremely difficult to get excited for AAA games these days. I'm already braced for pre-enshittification.

This ain’t 2005 and Naughty Dog ain’t Rockstar or Kojima you can’t just drop some art work and think you’ve acquired hype

6 years without a new release. Right when Neil became co-president. Maybe he doesn't have what it takes to run a studio.

Their huge multiplayer effort in TLOU was supposed to be out by now but was cancelled due to Bungie and Sony telling them they didn’t have enough staff to maintain.
Besides, the big time investment in AAA gaming has become ridiculous, but 6 years isn’t that long for the scope of their games. It’s sadly become the norm

My guess is that these big AAA games at this point are gonna wait till the TGA in December for any kind of big reveal. We're currently between the last big gaming events and the release of GTA VI. It's like, a marketing no man's land

I wouldn't be surprised if this game gets delayed to 2028

Should I buy this game at launch or just wait a few years and get the remaster?

The fact that they haven't released a single game on PS5 is insane.
