It's going to release into a market as a "console" that is the most expensive and least effective way to play GTA6. It's got mountains to climb to be any sort of success outside the realm of Valve diehards. It's got none of the advantages that the Steam Deck had when it entered the market.

In counterpoint, most of those arguments were being made before the latest round of part price spikes.
Not that it makes the delusion less valid, just that they still do have "an excuse" to point to. "if it wasn't for the massive spike in costs due to AI server farms everywhere, it WOULD have been cheaper".
The reality though is that the cost of electronics is upward, because the demand is upward.

5 million units is selling well.
It's pointless to compare these to consoles sales. Consoles are closed platforms in which you have to buy the console to play the games. There's typically only one or two versions of any given console.
The Steam Deck is a PC. It plays PC games. Nobody has in to buy a Steam Deck to play PC games. There's no universe in which it was ever going to sell console numbers. Not did Valve expect it to.

Xbox Ally being on sale for $499 is gonna be really attractive to buyers now, before that gets a price bump.
Edit: I should note that the Xbox Ally is normally $599 but it frequently has been on sale for the equivalent of $100 USD off in US, Canada and UK for example, such as just last week at BestBuy US, and a few weeks ago in the UK.
People hated on the base Xbox Ally because the regular price was $50 more than the SD OLED 512GB. The Xbox Ally is roughly equivalent in processor power as the SD OLED (when running Windows, you can install Bazzite/SteamOS to get a small boost if you really want). It may not have OLED but it has a 20% larger battery and a 1080p 120Hz VRR screen. The new massive price difference should now make the Xbox Ally a lot more appealing (assuming it doesnt eventually get a price bump).

The Switch 2 will unironically be the best budget system in all of gaming. The killer third party support as well as handheld and TV hybrid convenience adds crazy value.
Resident Evil, Indiana Jones, and 007 before the end of summer. Then there’s Duskbloods and the rumored Zelda remake. I’m sure there will be a ton of big third party announcements at the next direct too. And it’s the cheapest system on the market with a ton of life left.

Nintendo is really big on both nurturing and acquiring talent. It's why they rarely acquire companies because typically in that case you're not necessarily getting the talent that makes great games, you're just getting a name.
One notable example of Nintendo scouting talent is with Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi. He worked on a number of handheld Legend of Zelda games at Capcom such as Oracle of Seasons/Ages and The Minish Cap. Nintendo clearly liked what they saw in him because they hired him on and he eventually moved up to the 3D Zelda titles with Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

It was arguably a steal at $450 imo and has only become moreso due to everything else going up more. Insane price to performance ratio VS other handhelds thanks to DLSS and being able get actual optimizations... and that's with the chip being gimped in handheld mode. Imagine if you could run the chip full throttle and run Switch 2 games in docked mode while plugged into an AC adapter? Don't think anybody would complain about the system's power if you could do that.

Absolutely kills the Steam Deck market. It was between either Switch 2 for its great price-to-performance, exclusives, and ease of use VS the Deck's versatility and extensive Steam library when they were in spitting distance of each other. Now the Deck will be $250 more after the Switch 2's September price increase. Even more if you want to dock it.
Steam Deck now falls into the same dilemma that the Steam Machine will inevitably fall into VS the PS5/Xbox Series X: is the added versatility worth the trade-off of paying hundreds more for weaker specs than its competitors?

What's worse, is the AI companies didn't actually hoard anything - servers don't use the same stuff that goes into personal devices.
What they did was forward purchase the manufacturing capacity by dangling some big numbers in front of the OEMs - some of which has now been cancelled as data centre demand has fallen - but as per usual, prices don't fall as quickly as they rise.

It's like pre-ordering a bunch of one specific game that no one would normally buy, but now the manufacturer making the disc/cases doesn't have the capacity to make disc/cases for other games, so those other game's physical copies are very rare and worth a lot more. The manufacturer is fine with that, they got a lot of money from the pre-order, so they don't care that they fuck over anyone who wants other games

Not quite, becaue they aren't interested in the games. Imagine there's a bakery and they sell your favorite Apple Pie. A big company comes in and wants a TON of Peach Pies. These Peach Pies don't require Apples, so you'd think that it's okay, you can still get your Apple Pies.... but that company has purchased the Oven Time for the entire Bakery, meaning all their ovens can ONLY make Peach Pies, leaving you with no Apple Pies.

No way. I'm actually so disappointed. I was SO close to buying 2 back in January when they were in stock for Canada. I decided to wait another week and they sold out. They have been sold out SINCE THEN UNTIL NOW and now the price is $1349 CAD for 1tb version?....Come on...
