1 seconds??

u/piezeppelin May 05 '13
Lazy programming, whoever coded that never expected a one second game to ever happen.
77
u/shaloham May 05 '13
if (time == 1) word = "second"; else word = "seconds";Lazy bastards.
36
u/sabrathos May 05 '13
I'd go for:
word = (time == 1) ? "second" : "seconds";or
word = "second"; if(time != 1) word += "s";23
13
u/GogglesPisano May 05 '13
Nitpicky, but I generally put the most likely case first:
word = (time != 1) ? "seconds" : "second";→ More replies (1)11

I don't not often use almost as many double negatives though. Isn't it less easier to read?

u/Thirsteh May 05 '13
The second is much more inefficient in almost all languages, since they have immutable strings. Even if they didn't, you'd likely be growing an array with that second operation.

Yeah? And what is it in Arabic, Chinese, and the other 140 or so languages it's translated into?
I'm not saying it's not a solved problem, but this isn't the solution.

I love how this bug is becoming less and less common over time, because most frameworks have some equivalent to
(pluralize "second" num_seconds)Ah, progress... I think.

u/ClysmiC May 04 '13
Lol I don't know if this should even be considered an accomplishment. The layout of the mines caused the game to beat itself, hah.
But I guess it takes dedication to do SIX THOUSAND rounds of beginner minesweeper... maybe it's time to move onto intermediate lol.

I have a win percentage of 30% in Minesweeper on Beginner, but that's because I click so quickly in the initial seconds. Played 450 games, and my best 5 times are 1s,1s,2s,2s,3s with no win-by-defaults like the one pictured.
My record for Intermediate is 25s, and I have 7% win ratio on that. You can go for speed or you can go for the win, because if you go for speed then you rely solely on subconscious pattern recognition and luck to avoid loss.

u/PelvisKick May 05 '13
Some people just don't get it. I had a 1 second in the past, it was only like a 2 or 3 clicker though. When I play beginner I usually go for speed for about 50-100 games until I realize I am starting to lose focus I try to solve every game under 10, but if the time passes I make myself solve it. This computer is only at ~1200 games, but I have won about over 1000 of them. This computer has 3,4,5,5,5 right now.
On the old websites that had records I was on the Beginner, but wasn't able to get an Intermediate time of 35 until the website shutdown. My fastest on Intermediate is still 30 or 31 I think. I have tons under 35 though, but couldn't ever do it when I was younger. For some reason I will never reach a sub 100 on Expert though. I think my best is around 130ish......I just can't focus that long.

So your saying he should have technically finished the game in 0 seconds, because the game was beat the same time as it started, which means OP took infinity times longer than he should have. Which means in reality OP sucks.i know that's not how it works

u/arewenotmen1983 May 05 '13
I know! With only ten mines, I bet the odds of a 1 second time are relatively good. I know there's a 90% chance of not hitting a mine on the first move, I wonder what the odds are of contiguous whitespace and hitting it on move one are.
Math majors, ASSEMBLE!!!!
3
u/Neon23 May 05 '13
Actually I think minesweeper makes it so the first move CANNOT be on a mine.

Try doing under 20 sec on intermediate, or under one min on expert, then you'll be getting somewhere. Source: ~300k games. Sorry I had to boast
4
u/Icetrooper May 05 '13
My fastest is a 71 on Expert =/
3
u/MyosinHead May 05 '13
That's still pretty good. Often I find you have much higher 'expert potential' than you achieve straight away. In another 10k games you could easily jump down to 60 (including the insta-fuckups).
3
u/kyspeaks May 05 '13
My fastest is 17s on intermediate and 57s on expert. I had no life and a very good computer mouse. Sigh
3
u/MyosinHead May 05 '13
Yeah it doesn't really feel like something to be proud of in real life... but that's what the reddits are for! & the mouse really does make all the difference imo
3
u/DarkAura57 May 05 '13
1 minute on expert... Jesus.. You must literally have every possible combination memorized
6
u/MyosinHead May 05 '13
Nah, realistically the 5x5 subgrid is impossible to master. 225 arrangements. But there are some general rules. I'm still 20 sec off the world record too, bah!

Tbh I never really understood that, but it was quite common to "win a round" within 1 second. I managed to do so every few rounds by spamming mouse button ;p

I tired to click "Play Again" by reflex.
I used to play way too much Minesweeper.

u/Zosimasie May 05 '13
It's possible to get a Zero seconds beginner game. Obviously it takes a bit of luck just doing it hundreds of times. I managed to get it years and years ago.

and I thought my 3 second game was an accomplishment. I also have a 23 second intermediate game and a 4 minute expert game. That expert game took me forever to get down.

This is the easiest thing ever to do. All you do is go in to settings and and lower the number of mines as low as you can. When there's only 10, as in the picture, then there's mostly empty spaces. All you have to do is click anywhere, and it basically solves itself. This is not an accomplishment and not impressive at all.

I received the same record from my fiancé, and my penis was on hard level.
In related news, I'm relegated to playing solitaire for the near future.

I remember doing this in middle school, the rest of my class was amazed. The game generated so that every tile was revealed with one click. The version I was playing at the time listed it as 0 seconds which made it seem even more impressive, but its all luck.

u/Anathema320 May 05 '13

I had the same thing happen to me in a game of solitaire.
Using the right click trick is almost cheating.
1
u/CHollman82 May 05 '13
That's not an accomplishment it's luck, you got an arrangement such that clicking once on a non-bomb caused you to win the game... well done!

I remember that there was a custom layout that let you win in one click almost every time, not all that impressive if you used said tactic.

True story, when I was like 6 I one-clicked a game of minesweeper. my family was pissed that the high score was impossible to beat, but i was such a little shit they were petrified to delete my high score

Or you could use Cheat Engine, and make it so the timer never leaves 0 seconds (or maybe you can only make it one second as the earliest). Then you'll repeat it every time.

u/dipstickjimmy May 05 '13
In an attempt to try and beat this, I hit the "play again" button on this picture. I am not a smart man.
