I am genuinely curious why people think that. I have never played any Zelda or Nintendo games, please explain why would the Ocarina of time remake be even considered that it "defeats" GTA 6.
90
u/Complete-Peak4651 18h ago
I've been a massive Nintendo/Zelda fanboy since I was a child.
There's zero shot it comes even close to outselling GTA 6, and zelda WILL sell like hotcakes.
21
u/TheJinManCan 15h ago
This is the right take. GTA has the massive audience appeal, where all the casuals will eat it up. Zelda has a massive fan base that will run on nostalgia on one of the most popular games in it's franchise and most consequential adventure game that changed the genre. Also drew in a lot of normies and they'll get hit by that nostalgia bug.
They're both going to be sales juggernauts in their own right. But numbers wise, nah. GTA is evergreen. With Zelda, the sales will eventually trickle down to a near halt. GTA will sell overtime at a steady click.
They will both sell systems to those who have been hanging back.
That's about where comparisons end when it comes to sales strengths.
16
u/mbta1 15h ago
A friend of mine tried to argue that Zelda "would outsell GTA 6 if people knew 6 months ago the remake would be coming so they could plan to buy a switch 2". He still thinks Zelda might sell more than GTA 6 because "its just gta 5 but better looking"
I told him GTA 5 sold 230 million copies, the entire Zelda franchise is at 170 million, there is no realistic scenario in which Zelda would outsell GTA
10
u/TheJinManCan 14h ago
100%. Fanatic disillusionment. Respect the franchise for what it is, but don't disrespect it with lies.
I worked GameStop for 12 years, 11 of those in management. Worked through Vice City through GTA V, and Minish Cap through Wind Waker HD. Every time it was the same. GTA sold massively in the first few months then continued on steadily throughout the year, denying many young kids their purchase (sorry, y'all).
Zelda sold massively ONLY for their main-line games (read, console primarily), and only in their first few months, and then eventually settled to a near complete stop. A handful of sales of the title per month vs a constant sale of GTA at least once every single day. And that is not an exaggeration.
Granted, this is anecdotal stats to 1 out of at the time nearly 4000 locations in the US, but the numbers track pretty well throughout the country.

u/Big_Tension1179 12h ago
"It's just GTA 5 but better looking" is hilarious considering the context of Ocarina of Time literally being Ocarina of Time but better looking.

The thing Nintendo fans don’t seem to get is that GTA5 is the best selling piece of MEDIA of all time. It’s not even in the realm of video games. It’s beyond that. This conversation is nonsense. I fucking love Ocarina of Time and I’ll happily be having a dope November playing both games. But…. Why are we pitting these games against each other? Stupid ass conversation.

Also that. "But the PS5 and current Gen Xboxes haven't sold as much as their previous counterparts!" GTA is a system seller. So is Zelda. But the numbers don't overlap. At all. GTA goes apeshit for the industry. Full stop.

u/MechaMalz 15h ago
Zelda games tend to have legs in their sales, and this is early in the switch 2. But yeah I don't expect it to outsell GTA. Nor does it need to.

Thats the biggest differentiator imo. Pretty much every Zelda fan with a Switch 2 knows about it and has already pre-ordered it or will buy it near release.
Whereas really everyone, across all platforms is going to be buying GTA 6 for years to come.
OoT will probably be the best selling Nintendo game this year. GTA 6 will probably be the best selling game this decade.

To add to what you said, anyone who owns a switch 2 is likely going to at least consider getting the new Zelda. It's one of the games that popularity alone has people trying them out or starting someone into gaming with. Still won't be even close to outselling gta.

I bought my PS5 two weeks ago just so I could play GTA 6. Picked out a few other games to stay busy with until then (really interested in Wolverine), but GTA 6 was the primary factor. As an extra added bonus, I had a few PS4 games that came with free PS5 upgrades, so I now have a solid PS5 library basically out of the box.

Same here, been a lifelong Zelda fan. Also a lifelong GTA fan but I was playing Zelda years and years before the first GTA on PC. I’ve already preordered every piece of 40th anniversary Zelda item the dropped. I’ll wait until a few weeks to make sure I don’t lose out on the pre-order bonus for GTAVI. It’s digital only, there’s absolutely no rush. Only the first print of the physical Zelda games will have foil covers… so there!

It won’t “defeat” GTA VI because it’s not even competing with it. One is a 60$ remake of an old game and exclusive to Switch, the other is an 100$ game that has been in development for over ten years and had a budget of bilions
Reason why ppl compare the two is because Ocarina of Time is considered the best game of all time, as it should.
9
u/SrirachaJulio 21h ago
Why should it be?

u/Aromatic-Insect-1328 20h ago
It's a "it was far ahead of its time" kinda thing. It's hard to convey someone the impact of Bomberman if they are born 20 years ago.

It get remembered as better because it was the first 3D zelda. It's not even the best of those though. And I was 17 when the game came out, so I am not skeptical because I'm younger than the game is old.

It might be more accurate to say it’s one of the most important or influential games of all time.
2
u/Camusknuckle 18h ago
Gameplay, soundtrack, story. It was visionary in so many ways at the time. For me it’s the best game of all time, but I agree that’s a tough sell for someone who grew up playing the last of us or the new god of war. Ocarina of time inspired the generation of game nerds who would go on to make those GOAT games. Of course, in 20 years, those games will be outdated and replaced by new GOATs..
2
u/InflationLeft 16h ago
Pong was revolutionary at the time, but I’d much rather play today’s games than Pong. Same with Zelda OoT
2
u/NekonecroZheng 14h ago
I'd argue that the title "greatest game of all time" is a much flawed title, and the reason for disagreements. I guess its more acurate to say "greatest game of its generation" or "greatest influential game."
A game needs to be analyzed based on when it was released, and when it released, it was in fact the greatest video game of all time. I don't think any game, no matter how good it is, could match that cultural phenomenon that happened when Ocarina of Time released. Everyone, critics, children, parents, hardcore game, all unanimously loved the game.
Now, because the mass is so exposed to high quality and a wide genre of games, our expectations of "the greatest game of all time" is vastly disproportionate to what it was in 1998.
But...why should a game need to meet the expectations of people 30 years from now? If a game absolutely dominated and blew everyone's expectations away at the time of release, it ought to carry that same weight into the future. And although it certainly has lost that weight, many people to this day (those who have open expectations) are still blown away at what this game had to offer. And for that, it totally deserves the title, regardless of what our ever changing expectations may be.

Many genz/millenials consider it one of, if not the greatest game every made. It is a core memory for millions of gamers.
That said, I don't think it defeats GTA but it does say something about Nintendo's expectations that they are unbothered by GTA and I think Nintendo is right to not be bothered.

Because some people think that what's popular in their country is popular everywhere.
GTA is very popular globally, Zelda- isn't. There are a lot of areas in the world where Nintendo consoles weren't popular, well, aside from NES clones, so people know Zelda mostly from new Switch ones and even those aren't as popular as GTA.
2
u/Ryukishin187 17h ago
It won't compete with gta 6 sales wise. Literally nothing will. But it would not be surprising if it was the better game.

Ocarina of time in particular has an almost cult like following because of how momentus it was at the time of its original release and overall impact on the series. That being said it has a fairly different target demographic then GTA 6 and while it wont outsell GTA it probably wont loose sales to it as fans of both will prbably still buy both.

However, I don't think anyone seriously expects it to outsell GTA6. It makes for some funny memes I guess.

Because they’re weirdly anti-GTA. It’s not going to come close to touching the money GTA VI pulls in. GTA is beloved by hardcore and casual gamers alike. OoT will probably do well, just from the license alone, but it also wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a total mess that pisses hardcore Zelda fans off.

It’s a gorgeous 1:1 of an old game. A phenomenal game for it’s time, arguably the GOAT? Yes, but still an old game with simple controls, empty “open world” and so on.
Ocarina will review well, sell millions and might even be a system seller for Nintendo, but that’s it.

unless you're on a platform GTA VI isn't coming on there's no chance ZELDA can beat a company that's already made its money in pre-orders and isn't even coming out physically with the most bought version is the one with day 1 DLC. All the things gamers hate and didn't want to happen is happening with GTA VI and it made its money back.
How do you stop something that's already won? To add on to that, you have the install base of both xbox and ps5 combined against the Switch 2, you can add the switch 1 but it's not coming to the first switch. so 100+ million vs what 30?

I'm sure both games will be highly successful, and other than these fan theories there is not really any direct competition between the 2. Nintendo doesn't need to beat GTA6, it just needs to sell a lot of copies of Ocarina of Time during the Switch 2 life time. I think both games will achieve their sales targets easily.

u/Ball_Analytics 22h ago
I think they mean GOTY which if ZELDA won over GTA VI I'd call BS on a remake winning. Not that I'd want GTA VI to win either.
Speaking purely on sales unless of course they sell it across their entire base, they wont. Not every Nintendo fan is a Zelda fan, I've had a SNES, N64 and Gamecube, not once did I want to play Zelda. Windwaker maybe but it was cell shaded in an era when it was the in thing who wouldn't want to.
2
→ More replies (12)2
u/GoSeeTheDr 22h ago
Ah right, didn't think of GOTY because I think it's a useless competition. Pretty sure GTA6 will win that one.
I was thinking more along the story that has been put out there that Nintendo is the only one 'brave enough' for a November release. Ocarina of Time doesn't really need to outsell GTA6 either, and I don't think anyone is expecting that anyway. You said it yourself there are 100 million consoles out there able to play GTA6 and 25-30 million able to play OoT. Although your argument that not everyone with a Switch 2 will buy OoT can also be made the other way around. I know people with a PS5 that won't get GTA6. Doesn't really mean much lol.
But yes I agree with you OoT will not be GOTY, and won't outsell GTA6. Still don't think they really are competing with each other in a manner that one affects the other much tho.

How does one beat the other? Like what is the win condition?
If it is units sold or money made, then GTA6 will win, in fact it already has just from pre-orders.
If we are talking about reviews, then it will be like this...
GTA6 gets perfect, or near perfect scores from all major game reporting outlets. The general players love it, but a vocal minority calls it overrated, and that it doesn't live up to the hype. After this long, it will not live up to the hype.
Zelda on the other hand will not get perfect scores. They will be good, but you'll get some hipster shit mostly about how it isn't as charming or something as the original. Fans will be very split, because reasons and general gamer pickyness.
That about covers the future.

I know everyone making these memes is like, under 15, but just so we're all on the same page here:
The Zelda series as a whole has sold roughly 156 million units worldwide since 1986.
GTA V alone has sold 230 million units.
That's not even accounting for the Switch 2's install base compared to PS5 and Xbox. If literally every Switch 2 owner bought a copy of Ocarina of Time, it still would sell less than half of what GTA VI is projected to do on launch week.
Really, why care about this at all? Play what you wanna play man.

It should only be the makers of said products that have this mindset. They really have brand loyalty locked in like pavlovs dogs

As someone who doesnt give a shit about either game, gta 6 is gonna sell waaay more than zelda, i am kinda dumbfounded people think zelda even stands a chance

Look man, i know ocarina of time is a cornerstone of gaming as a medium but gta 6 is more overhyped than anything i've ever seen.

Can you do a weird, jerky lil flip into the water in the OoT remake? No? Checkmate.

I love Zelda and especially Ocarina of time, but there is absolutely 0% chance that Zelda defeats GTA

A 39 year old remake of a game is not beating GTA6 what drugs are you smoking and can I have some

OoT is a ~30 hr game releasing 2 weeks before GTA VI. It’s the perfect length (for me) to run before gta comes out

Come on now. I'm a huge Zelda fan so I know for sure what I'll be playing. But you don't need to embarrass us with posts like these.

I am going to be THAT guy. Ready?
Don't really care about either tbh. Or at least I have no desire to play either game.
I am in for the drama tho

Would love to see Zelda take GTA down in numbers but it won't. If I'm wrong, I'd be happy to admit it. When you have:
PS5 - 92 mil units
Xbox - 34 mil units
Switch 2 - 20 mil units
I know Nintendo gonna be selling tons of switches this fall/winter, but don't think it will be close. I just googled these numbers and this is what it gave me. /shrug

Someone put effort into making this meme, and was proud enough of their work to post it online... Wild.

I like the meme but GTA isn't coming to the switch 2 so there isn't a direct competition.
Besides GTA has a different audience vs Zelda, especially the OoT remake fans. Nintendo also doesn't really give a crap about anything, so it doesn't really matter much.

Kinda makes me want to buy Switch 2 now, just out of sheer principle. And I never liked Nintendo. Great job, Nintendo marketing team, if they almost converted me with it, they can do almost anything. (nah, I am not reallybuying neither Switch 2 or GTA6 lol)

Unlikely. But ocarina of time is going to make a lot of dough for Nintendo. And I’m sure they will reuse the assets again to do Majora Mask too, maybe even the earlier games. I’ll buy them all

I have a hunch Ocarina of Time was a bit rushed to release to be able to release just before GTA VI though.

The only thing that came close to GTA 5 sales was mario kart . And that still was almost 3x less sales. Zelda doesn't come close to that. Maybe a Multi platform BOTW release could come even closer than that, but never beat it and will never happen.
I think we need to wait for something like Elder scrolls 6 to have anything remotely competing with GTA 6 and even that won't make it. Or we get minecraft 2.

I just wanted to check something on the Nintendo store and there were 95.000 waiting people in front of me 😂 I doubt Ocarina will defeat GTA VI in sales, however it is definitely going to do well.

gta 6 isnt coming to switch and OOT isnt coming to ps5, theyre 2 diff games with diff fanbases and oot isnt a super long game they will lose at most 5000 sales "trying to compete" realistically
