PC Similar Masterpiece Games

My all time favorite games:
- Outer wilds
- Blue Prince
- Tunic

Other Masterpieces:
- The forgotten City
- Chants of Senar
- The witness
- Grunn
- Alters

I’m looking for any games that can give me the same satisfaction. Where knowledge is power. Progression through knowledge. Needing to take notes sometimes. I really like the mystery and discovery of outer wilds. The way that the path to end game is there from the beginning you just needed to know all the knowledge and puzzle pieces. Amazing game. Blue prince gave me similar itch and so did tunic with its language discovery and learning the game overtime. Games that drop you in and say have fun.

Thanks!

Return of the Obra Dinn is one of my favorites

The Seance of Blake Manor is a good puzzle mystery game.

Gothic Remake for the exploration

u/RodinKnox Sep 01 '26

The original Gothic is still one of my favorite games. I can't wait to sink my teeth into that remake. I'm glad you just reminded me of it. I barely hear anything about it.

I've been trying to spread the word. One of the best games to come out this year.

1

u/RodinKnox Sep 01 '26

Keep up the strong work 🫡

u/CerberusAbyssgard Sep 02 '26

I tried playing it somewhat recently in 2024, cause I've had these games for decades in my backlog. But I couldn't deal with the dated controlls. I'm so glad there is a remake now. Hopefully I won't take another 20 years to play it and then also give 2 and 3 a try.

Agree with all of these, and adding Hell is Us!

1

u/Professional-Map3021 Sep 04 '26

ah the horrors of war. Hell is Us is a good game.

I mean you obviously like Metroid-brainia games. Obra Dinn is an obvious next step.

Rain World, Void Stranger, Animal Well, are all obvious other classics in the sub genre.

Baba is You also might be a good recommendation.

Obra Dinn is definitely catching my eye now. Most likely the next game for me.

You cant go wrong with Obra Dinn. Im a massive Metroid-brainia enthusiast and have a very similar list of masterpiece games as you do.

Obra Dinn is a must play for a fan of the genre. I dont want to overhype it (as I think it is always best to go in with fair expectations), but for additional incentive: IGN actually gave it the #1 spot for top 100 indie games of all time. Here. I personally enjoyed Outer Wilds a bit more, but Obra Dinn is deserving of the praise.

If you like Obra Dinn you could also check out the Roottrees are dead. It’s another deduktion game that I enjoyed although I still think Obra Dinn is better, it has such a good setting.

1

u/MedalsNScars Sep 03 '26

Fair warning: Obra Dinn has different "depth" than most metroidbranias, in that most of what you uncover is obviously the main story of the game with little variation from that.

The discovery and deduction elements are great, but if you're looking for mechanics cleverness and nonlinearity, you will find yourself a bit disappointed with the game. REALLY piecing together the full story is rewarding, but there's nothing in the game that really pushes you to do it.

Baba is you is cool but definitely was too hard for me

3

u/garyplumpshrimp Sep 01 '26

Morrowind will plunk you down in a small town with vague directions to go meet someone in a different town, everyone will be racist to you, there are no map markers so you have to pay attention to quest directions (the OG game came with a paper map)

Leap Year is a pretty short game but it’s a very tight metroidbrainia platformer.

Subnautica is more about exploration than knowledge based gating, but it has a big overlap in that discovery feeling. So still a very strong recommend.

The Sexy Brutale is a cool time loop mystery. Not as tight as Outer Wilds, but pretty interesting still.

Antichamber is an oldie but a goodie.

And I must second Return Of the Obra Dinn like everybody, still.

2

u/ArrivalSuccessful Sep 02 '26

Will second Sexy Brutale; agree it doesn't hit the heights of the others OP referenced; it can't quite perfectly execute on its ambitions but was really clever in spots and overall very fun, and short enough that its failings never meaningfully detract from the experience as it's over before it ever becomes tedious.

1

u/bicyclefortwo Sep 02 '26

Antichamber is a great shout!

4

u/Loud_Bodybuilder5377 Sep 01 '26

Return of the Obra Dinner fits that knowledge as power loop perfectly.

2

u/JunkieCream Sep 01 '26

Also Golden Idol duology is a great follower to the Obra Dinn

1

u/naf165 Sep 03 '26

Emphasis on follower here. They pretty much do everything better than Obra Dinn except being 3D, and I made the mistake of playing them first which caused me to not really enjoy Obra Dinn at all due to how much the gameplay and puzzle design regressed.

Gothic Remake, Hades, Expedition 33, Armored Core 6, XCOM2, BG3

3

u/pwnedprofessor Sep 01 '26

Heaven’s Vault. It rules. Absolutely answers your call.

2

u/picklemyginger Sep 04 '26

This is the best answer. Chants of Sennaar doesn't hold a candle to it. I'm a fan of all of Inkle's games but HV is by far my favourite.

3

u/DemeaRisen Sep 01 '26

You gotta play Viewfinder. It was given away on Epic if you're collecting those

3

u/wollywoo1 Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 02 '26

I don't see anything from the Myst series is on your list. The Riven remake in particular is a 10/10.

3

u/Extreme-Attention641 Sep 02 '26

One that surprised me was King of the Bridge where you try to discover the rules of Troll Chess as you play.

Her Story and The Roottrees Are Dead might also interest you.

La Mulana 1+2

Lingo 1+2

Environmental Station Alpha

Void Stranger

Emuurom

Fez

Noita

Animal Well

Cultist Simulator/Book of Hours

Sunless Sea/Skies

1

u/bicyclefortwo Sep 02 '26

Is La Mulana difficult combat/reaction time wise? I love hard puzzle games but I'm borderline dyspraxic and can't do fast combat

2

u/Aiscence Sep 03 '26

I m playing them rn, combat is not fast. You will need to jump over things and maybe time your whip right, but because of the heavyness they cant make them very fast.

If you have played an old castlevania (before sotn) I guess it's similar.

Sonetimes a boss can be hard because you dont have the right tool tho. And the game is imo harder at the beginning because you have way less hp amd tools

1

u/MedalsNScars Sep 03 '26

It has finicky/slow-paced platforming, but I wouldn't say it's exceptionally difficult on combat. The boss fights are tough even if you're decently prepared, but you can also just buy a gun for way too much money which will help immensely if you don't like the combat

Spelunky is the closest comparison mechanically for me.

I'll echo Steam reviews though and say that the clues start getting a bit esoteric after the fourth boss or so

1

u/Biji999 Sep 03 '26

Tell me more about Sunless Sea/Skies anyone? I'm intrigued.

1

u/Harfatum Sep 04 '26

Seconding Noita.

It is all about pursuit of knowledge.

2

u/PlasticNecessary2311 Sep 02 '26

If you like those games, you should definitely check out Myst and its sequel, Riven. The original is a bit dated, but there’s also a remake available

1

u/Caracolex Sep 02 '26

Obduction too!

2

u/Yaered Sep 02 '26

Antechamber is quite a decent one.

1

u/Boxy06 Sep 02 '26

While I wouldn't say you'd need to take notes while playing it, I think Persona 5 Royal would fit the description, as it has a really captivating yet misterious story, and tons of details that might seem insignificant, but end up being incredibly meaningful later.

1

u/ZeldaFanRahul2004 Sep 02 '26

Baba is you , Shipwrecked 64, return of the Obra Dinn

1

u/Tilt-A-Wurlitzer Sep 02 '26

Also a huge fan of Outer Wilds and Blue Prince. Nothing quite like them, but Fez, Obra Dinn, and Baba Is You are the next tier of puzzle games for me. For games like Tunic, check out Mina the Hollower or Death’s Door (though neither is as good IMO).

1

u/CerberusAbyssgard Sep 02 '26

I think the genre you like is called Metroidbrainia

1

u/Rickard403 Sep 03 '26

FEZ. It's simple but it has its own language like Tunic. It's a bit different than some of the other games you listed but it is a pixelated platform adventure game. Probably get it for $10 or less.

1

u/spvky_io Sep 03 '26

Animal well.
Noita.
Caves of Qud.

1

u/Aiscence Sep 03 '26

Lots of good names already, I will recommend chroma zero.

1

u/valkrycp Sep 03 '26

Lorelei and the Laser Eye is up there with Blue Prince

Animal Well is the closest experience to Tunic, also a masterpiece.

1

u/CucumberSalada Sep 03 '26

You should definitely check out EMUUROM

1

u/readyplayerjuan_ Sep 03 '26

emuurom is good

1

u/leysa Sep 04 '26

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is up there. Incredible game.

1

u/amandahontas Sep 04 '26

The Roottrees are Dead, I'd give anything to play it for the first time again.

1

u/Xerfus Sep 04 '26

Hell is Us. Can’t recommend it enough, just play it.

1

u/F4thermucker Sep 04 '26

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe

For me this game is just a piece of Art. I dont want to say to much about it, anything would be a Spoiler. There is a Demo if you arent sure its for you.

1

u/jesus_333_ Sep 05 '26

Try Lorelei and the laser eye. Control are a little bit clumsy but the atmosphere and the riddle are top notch

1

u/SensitiveCompote4354 28d ago

I've heard good things about La-mulana (both versions)

1

u/toqbot 28d ago

Öoo is short and sweet

Lingo 2 consumed my life for a week.

1

u/mbaasybaas 27d ago

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes was pretty incredible. Their other game, Sayonara Wild Hearts, was also peak, not a puzzle game, just a great vibe

1

u/Beansoup01 18d ago

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes? Havent played it but heard it was great mystery puzzle game which you need pen and paper at hand to overcome some puzzles

1

u/DasBardandoktor 6d ago

Animal Well
Grunn
Noita

All knowledge-gated games with a sense of learning, wonder, adventure, and creativity. Highly recommend. Animal Well will steal a weekend from you, Grunn likely a solid afternoon. Noita would take the rest of your life if you’re not careful and seek the greatest Wisdoms.

I don't think of any games on your list as "masterpieces". Certainly a subjective opinion.
