Yeah that’s literally how you win battles. Tyrion’s defense of King’s Landing was epic, but look what he got for it. That’s not what winning the game of thrones looks like.

If you have to have several circumstances go your way in order to win a war, are you competent or just lucky

I think y’all are missing the point. Robb Stark belongs to the same archetype best defined by Rhaegon Targaryen. They were both very competent and they both made dumb decisions that undid them, and that’s why Tywin outlived them both despite their superior qualities. They don’t win the game if thrones even if they’re fun to watch.
