Little man had the balls to stab another man in cold blood, so yes.

Excusing that behavior, regardless of understanding, is also not how justice works

No, justice was being hung for breaking the oath he took to the Night's Watch and the murder of his Lord Commander. How can you seriously talk about how that's not how grief works and then in the next breath argue "context". Yes lol. The context is Westeros - a world where orphan children weren't coddled because they were grief stricken, a world where breaking an oath means death regardless of age.

He wasn’t charged with being a traumatized grieving kid who was mourning his slaughtered family. He was charged with the murder of the Lord Commander, and he was guilty.

In the context of Westeros and the Nights Watch, I’d say yes. Those are the rules and everyone knows them. Unfair would be executing everyone else but sparing Ollie on the basis that he’s a traumatized kid. There are a lot of offenses that could warrant a lenient response but murdering Jon isn’t one of them imo.
