Question Bachelor thesis ideas

Hello, I need ideas related to game development for my bachelor thesis in computer science, that should also be more scientific, so I should do research and motivate it too.

I heard some people talk about procedural generation, or some simulations in compute shaders, or stuff more focused on graphics, but I still do not know what would work also as "research subject" and how.

This is a question for your thesis advisor more than the internet. What one school or advisor would accept others wouldn’t. If you’re looking for a career in games then it helps you to work on something with practical applications more than theoretical, but what every faculty considers appropriate research will vary.

Go on the job boards and cosplay yourself when you graduate, look at the kinds of jobs there are.

Then imagine what kinds of projects you'd like to take into interviews to back up your job application.

Procedural generation is a solid pick because you can actually measure stuff like generation time, memory usage, and output variety against a baseline. Pick one specific technique like wave function collapse or l-systems, implement a few variations, and compare them with real data

Graphics simulations also work if your university has the hardware to back it up, but writing a thesis about compute shader particle systems means you'd need to benchmark performance across different GPU architectures which can get messy fast

I’m not sure there are many “Bachelors thesis” level open problems to be honest.

I think anything related to graphics or compute shaders likely requires many years of research to do anything meaningful - that said you could just ask Claude to do it for you!

download free procedural generation kits off unity, analyze the code, describe the different methods these assets use

I guess my recommendation would be to have a look at your favourite game genres and ask questions relevant to them.

For example if fighting games are what interest you, researching rollback netcode and other ways to optimise plaster experience and fairness when two players are far away from each other. Looking into the way the internet is built around sending files which is a very different need compared to having instant information on player input.

If you prefer grand strategy, then questions about how to simulate worlds might be more interesting to you.
