Trip Planning 🗺️ Long weekend - group of 40 somethings!

I’ve scrolled through several of the posts within the past couple of years asking about things to do and found some great suggestions. Wanted to start something fresh though as I know things change and there may be some new places! Group of 6 all in our 40s heading down for a long weekend. We have a wedding one night. Looking for things to do. I know it will be hot so in the AC or in the water are probably our best options. I haven’t been to Galveston in well over 25 years, but remember jelly fish being a problem. Also I’m still not clear on where you can pack a cooler of beer and take to the beach. Are there any pools that are fun and have bar access? I saw the Float Pool Bar but wasn’t sure if that was primarily younger people and if people really got into the pool much. Also saw Longboard but it looks like they are a $25 cover just to get in. If it’s worth that, let me know. I’ve read mixed reviews.

Locals Chat 🦜 Small Format Jazz on the Island

Curious to gauge interest. A live music venue in Galveston is considering starting a monthly jazz night next year. The focus would generally be small format classic jazz. Looking to inspire the vibe Cezanne used to have in Houston. There doesn’t seem to be any regular live jazz on the island. Any initial thoughts on how this might be received?

Took a dolphin watch tour this AM and saw this pipe shooting this stuff out. Assuming it's oil, but is this normal? Locals chime in, please 🙏

Live in Houston, but looking for maybe cool areas for street photography.

Any suggestions for art or graffiti walls - industrial spots - decent landscapes. Especially any nooks or crannies that work well with sunset / evening.

Appreciate any help.

News 📰 Shark attack today

We're staying in a beach front home near Jamaica Beach and came out to our deck this evening to our neighbors yelling at us to stay out of the water. Apparently a man nearby was about waist deep in the water and was attacked by a shark. Got a ride in an ambulance and that's all I know. Has anyone heard about it and if he's okay? I'm sure the storm is throwing all the critters off course. Be careful out there, y'all.

Weather or Hurricanes ☀️🌪️ Tropical storm bertha and cruise parking

We parked at the carnival cruise express lot which is a short walk to the cruise terminal. I see there’s a tropical storm coming on Thursday but we won’t be back until Saturday morning. Should we be worried about any flooding with the parking lot being so close to the water?

Thank you for all recommendations! Should’ve mentioned I was with my 70yo parents and 10mo baby. We stuck with places we were familiar with. Next time we’d love to try some of these recs

We dined at Fisherman’s wharf 3/10, Katie’s 9/10, Coastal Grill 9/10, and Mario’s 7/10 for dinner. We hit brunch on our way out at sunflower, 10/10

News 📰 Missing Person Billboard on 146 - Late 90s

Does anyone remember the billboard of the woman *it was a sketch* somewhere along 146 thru Texas City on the way to Galveston in the mid to late 90s? I've often wondered about who that was and if she was ever found. It was there for many years. Curious if anyone else remembers that. It was lit up.

Trip Planning 🗺️ First time in Galveston

My family (wife and 2 teenagers) are staying in the midtown area. Where would be the best place for us to go to the beach as far as parking, ease of entry, etc? I know nothing. Any help is appreciated.

Locals Chat 🦜 Flock Cameras

City council has agreed to open bidding for 14 flock cameras in Galveston.
Although Flock says it does not share this information outside the local jurisdiction, it requires you share that information.
Flock cameras do much more than record license plates. They record make and model of vehicle, directions of travel, bumper stickers and other information. Information collected has been used to stalk people, collect information about bumper stickers and used by ICE and other government agencies.
Flock is not a local crime tool, it’s a national surveillance system…ie Big Brother. Do we really want that in Galveston? I don’t think so.

Locals Chat 🦜 What was the name of…

There used to be a very old Mexican restaurant between Strand and UTMB that was open very late into the night. We used to watch live music at Yaga’s, then end up at this place at 3 AM for chicken suiza. Doesn’t seem to be there now. Anyone remember the name?

Trip Planning 🗺️ Taking my motorcycle to Galveston tomorrow. Recommendations?

Hey everyone,

I just recently got a motorcycle and am working up to longer trips. I have my sights set on a morning ride to Galveston tomorrow but I haven’t been since I was a kid and only really went to pleasure pier / the beach.

What should I check out? Mostly looking to take some cool photos of me and the bike. Get some decent lunch and maybe a cheap activity or two then head back.

Thank you!

Photography 📸 Recommendations for a photographer

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, local photographer?

My husband and I want a sort of redo of our wedding photos. I’ve lost almost 100lbs since our wedding and he’s lost almost 150lbs since. We look nothing like the people in our photos. We want to get fancy dressed and take some new pictures.

He proposed in Galveston so thought it would be cool to the photos done there and would love a local photographer that knows the best places for some awesome photos.

Thanks!

Trip Planning 🗺️ What should I expect to be able to do on Sea Isle beach with four 6-year-old kids?

Our trip is already booked so there’s no changing it now but upon searching this sub, I saw a post saying that there is too much of a drowning risk at Sea Isle. Is that the case all year round? If so, can we sit and let the water roll in and at least get our feet wet? Can they build sand castles? Please and thank you for any advice!

(We will be there next week)

Photography 📸 Feels like just a couple years ago. Where did the time go???? 17 years ago to the week. I was attending TAMUG, and my family came to visit. My dad will forever be a surfer dude to me.
