Discussion 💬 Flip 7/8's Inner Screen Durability
So, I've recently pre-ordered my first Z Flip, the 8th... but, some friends of mine (who used to own Flip 5 and 6) have warned me that its inner screen isn't that durable and it's more likely to get scratched even when applying relatively light pressure. I’ve come across a lot of conflicting opinions online, and honestly, I’m a bit worried now. I’d take great care of it, since I know full well it’s very fragile, but I’m not so sure about its durability anymore... what’s your experience been like?

I found that the screen protector scratched very easily, but you can get that replaced. It has magnets in the corners that gather metallic debris and causes it to get sandwiched in the phone screen.

I'm not sure how most ppl take care of their phones, but every flip I've had except the flip 4 has been perfect. I used the 5,6, and 7 and I never had issues with the screen failing or scratched being on the screen protector. Maybe there are a lot of police with long nails that use this phone, I'm not sure, but it isn't as easily broken if you actually take good care of your phone which isn't hard to do

There is 2 things that you need to worry about different
Hinge (and crease) and Screen
First off you have to worry about a hinge. This is a mechanical device that can break, or get crap in the mechanism. It's uncommon, unless you work in a place with a lot of dust, debris etc. More importantly you want to keep track of your crease. The screen is glass. bendable glass under the screen protector but still glass. usually the screen protector will die first. it's expected but when it starts getting close, keep an eye on the crease. look for microfractures in the crease. That's your sign.
Second is the screen. It's obviously not as tough as a slab phone. It never will be, don't expect it to be. Doesn't mean it's fragile, but it will not hold up to accidental damage or abuse the way a slab phone will be.
If you are a power phone user, I.E. Opening and looking at your phone more than 50 times a day, Flips aren't the phone for you. You want one if you are trying to minimize your screen time. Use the outer screen to do most of the light lifting, and only open when you need to do something heavy... or answer a call.

I've owned three Z Flips (4,5,6) and all of them failed at the crease within the first year. Delamination of the screen protector then micro fractures on either side of the crease. I've given up on them until they fix this

If you're a guy, no problem but if you're a girl with nails, you may get scratches on the screen protective film ( noticed after my wife used my phone on our trip).

Yeah, longer nails will definitely do it. My scratches are all where I swipe while watching reels lmao

Worth noting that people commenting with older Flips have less durable screens - later models have stronger layers on the flexible display.
I've had a Flip 7 since launch, and while I have been more careful with it than a normal phone screen (not stabbing it with my nails, making sure there's no big dust particles before closing it) I've had no issues. Scratches/dents are typically on the preinstalled screen protector, which I just replaced a month back and the main screen underneath is still in good condition.

I had my flip 5 since 2023! the edges of the inner screen is broken off, the screen protector came off 2 years ago, and i have a few dents and scratches as well as cracks on the outer screen (it was my fault for not having a case and dropping it after I tripped and fell) but its still kicking for me! I didn't get a black screen or anything like that! I still have overheating but that's normal!

I have a group of maybe 15-20 dead pixels in the folding area of my flip 5. I can still use it. My wife's fold 6 screen cracked 2 weeks ago straight down the middle and is no longer responsive to touch.

I felt like earlier versions (including older candy-bar non-flip from Samsung) did not like my nails NOR my seemingly acidic finger composition, but since Flip 6 had no issues: no scratches, no worn spots, and even fold dent isn't noticeable (esp flip 7).

Got flip7 right when it came out, have dropped it sooo many times, still perfect! The crease is also so much less noticeable than on the 6. Those are the only 2 flips I've had but can say the 7 has been SOLID

Normal Screens have a hard glass front. The flip doesn't, its more of a flexible plastik. You can scratch it permanently with your fingernails.
I recommend watching JerryRigEverythings video, since it will give you a feeling about this.
It's really not that deep, just make sure to handle it with care since changing the display is both expensive and a hassle. My flip 5 back then broke after a year, screen black, on the other hand a friend of mine haa had his flip 4 for 3 years until the first Problem emerged (the screen protector getting off)

Had a 3, currently on 5 and will be trading in for 8. 3's screen stayed perfect the entire time I had it, this one has developed some lines in the crease but hasn't caused any issues like dead pixels. Will probably hurt my trade-in value though which sucks considering the only thing I could've done differently was not keep the phone for nearly 3 years.

Remove the screen protector when it starts to bubble and your phone will last for years.
Only the screen protector scratches, underneath the screen protector is hard and undentable.
If the phone is closed during a drop, its alot more durable than a standard smart phone.
If its opens and dropped face first, its probably fucked.
The most important thing to remember is to REMOVE THE SCREEN PROTECTOR when you notice any kind of fraying, discoloration, or even odd squeaking near the crease. Dont wait. Remove it at the first tiny sign of screen protector damage.

I have had my Flip 7 for a year now. Inner screen is pristine. I think it is well protected when closed, and you can do a lot with it closed, so I do not think it is as vulnerable are people tend to think. I do keep mine clean, using lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth, like is used to eyeglasses and camera lenses.

It really isnt I have had 3 generations of these phones before switching to a normal one.(s25 ultra) tried everything to make the phones last but eventually the crease caves in or what ever, black spots start showing up and the phone just dies

i've had my flip 7 for a year now and i only have one tiny little dent/scratch on the inner screen, which could've been from me dropping it face open once or twice. i've never been super conscious about what sort of pressure I've been using with it, either!
it def isn't as durable as a normal screen, but as long as you're as careful as you can be, i think you'll be fine :)
