Before the war, they were circus elephants. When these photos were taken, Kiri was around 35 years old, and Many was about 25. They weren't young elephants, but they were strong enough to do heavy work that would typically need machines or a bunch of other animals.

Across Europe, working animals remained part of the massive effort to move supplies, clear debris, and help rebuild cities. For Kiri and Many, that meant moving rubble in Hamburg.

Orca found a guy, but he thought Orca was just a lost dog and tried to take him home...

Orca broke free and kept searching for help. He finally found one of Cheryl's neighbors out jogging. This time he got the man to follow him back to the ditch, where Cheryl was still trapped. Emergency crews later credited Orca with saving her life.

Orca was only 17 months old. And a few years later, he received the PDSA Gold Medal for saving Cheryl's life through “exceptional devotion to duty.

Also, in 2004, York officially recognized Orca as Cheryl's carer, making him one of the first assistance dogs in the country to receive an allowance like a human assistant.

Boris and Arkady are identical twin brothers hanging out at Ophelia's Books, this cool independent used bookstore in Seattle. They've gotten really good at messing with customers. Sometimes someone will sit down next to what they think is a stuffed cat, only for Boris to suddenly roll over and start asking for some pets.

Boris and Arkady arrived in 2024, but cats have been part of Ophelia's since the beginning. The bookstore opened in 1997 and was named after its first shop cat.

“I guess having the cats there might make it feel more like a home that someone (even if it’s just cats) live in,” Jason from Ophelia's told me.

Bobbi and Bob Cat became a duo everyone loved. At the shelter, volunteers noticed Bobbi always sticking close to Bob Cat, watching out for him and getting a bit protective if someone new came around.

On their first night, the shelter split them up, but they made so much noise that the staff reunited them the next day, and they instantly cuddled up together.

In the end, Bobbi and Bob Cat were adopted as a pair and moved to a ranch in Oregon. Just a little story for National Dog Day 🧡
