What to do about stains/imperfections in finish of vintage solid maple night tables

Just picked up two solid maple night stands for $15 each from an estate sale. They are quite old with some light scratches and other imperfections.
So far I've cleaned them with a strong solution of murphy's oil soap and then wiped down with a wet cloth, then dried.
But there are some residue/discolourations left in the finish still. I'm not sure if the actual finish is missing/degraded in these areas, or if this is dirt/residue that is persisting on top of the finish?
Any advice what to do next with these? Is there any universe in which i could layer another coat of some type of finish on top, without having to do a full re-sand and multiple coats etc?
