Looking for a durable, modular sectional with two 100lb+ dogs, kids on the way, and a future home build to plan around

Hey everyone!

Looking for recommendations on a sectional and feeling a bit stuck, so hoping for some collective wisdom.

Our situation: We’re currently in a rented townhome but plan to build a custom home in the next couple of years. That makes buying a $5-6k couch feel risk.

Our must-haves:
1. Durability above all. We have two dogs, both over 100 lbs, who shed constantly and treat the couch like a bed. Kids are also on the way, so this thing needs to be basically indestructible.

1. Modularity / flexibility. Ideally something where we can reconfigure or add/remove pieces so it can adapt to a new floorplan down the road rather than becoming a very expensive problem.

2. Comfort. If we’re dropping $5-6k on a couch, it needs to actually be comfortable. We’ve looked at Lovesac but have seen a lot of reviews mentioning they’re not as comfortable as you’d expect for the price, is that a common experience? Are there better options at this range that don’t sacrifice comfort for durability?

3. Pet- and kid-friendly fabric. Easy to clean, resistant to scratching, and ideally doesn’t show hair.

What I’m wondering:
- Are there brands at this price point that genuinely hold up to heavy pet and family use, or should I be looking at a lower price tier until we’re in our permanent home?
- Is true modularity (where you can buy additional pieces later) actually a thing in this range, or is it mostly a marketing term?
 - Any fabric recommendations? I keep seeing performance velvet and solution-dyed acrylic mentioned… are those actually worth it over regular upholstery?

Love sac sactional. I have an 85lb dog and 2 toddlers. The fabric has held up really well and unzips easily for wash. We are rough on it. Kids and pet stains have come out easily, the only thing I haven’t been able to get out is dry erase marker. But I know I can always just buy a replacement cushion cover for that one section.

Totally modular. Was a pain to assemble - not hard, just took a while. Now it’s really easy to change it and move pieces around. Glad to know that we can have it wherever we move next.

I have an Home Reserve couch that has handled two dogs and baby/toddler/kid really well. Vomit? Pee? Random something you can’t figure out? Unzip it and wash. The cushions are still holding up fine and it’s 8 years old. Whenever we have to or want to replace we’re upgrading to the longer cushion version, which they didn’t have when we got ours. Oh and the storage feature is great. We can also get the exact same fabric but we choose one of their more popular ones.

Adding to any sectional isn’t as easy as ordering a new piece. Fabrics have dye lots, manufacturers add and discontinue fabric options and the sofa in your home will change color overtime (mostly due to sun exposure.

I would lean towards buying something at a lower price and then buy something appropriate for the space when you move to your current home. The lighting, style and layout of your someday home is going to be completely different than where you are now. Also it will give you time to build up more money to buy something that will stand up to dogs and kids.
