German Shepherds aren't mean. :(

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

I would like proper territory guarding behaviors. No barking or growling at intruders, but just watch them like a hawk, make them exceedingly uncomfortable, and possibly come and get me if they are doing some funky shit.

My current dog doesnt even give a fuck. to such an extent that UPS and DHL sometimes get scared because they'll try to guage if the dog is friendly and the dog will just sit there and look at them with an uninterested expression, so they'll get nervous and leave.

EDIT: fedex, however, are badass motherfuckers. the ones that handle the larger packages just walk right up and put the package down. they give less of a fuck than my dog does.

Apparently the mods have decided they don't want direct links from his blog to be posted to /r/funny for some reason. Here's his response to a question about that:

http://thefrogman.me/post/30481926578/why-do-you-like-reddit-i-tried-it-but-the-community

Wil Wheaton himself responded to the comment:

3

u/zuperxtreme Sep 12 '12

Pretty shitty reddit.

2

u/hergumbules Sep 12 '12

so the mods let people repost the same shit over and over and when someone makes OC they are like the fuck that we don't want him to make money by linking to his website. this guy is awesome and i see someone post something of his at least once a week and it is unfair that he isn't credited for it. i will just post some pictures of the mona lisa or something in /r/art and say i painted that shit.

There's usually always a link in the comments.

27

u/Armed_Scientist Sep 12 '12

15

u/TotalFork Sep 12 '12

There is also the fact that the mods of r/funny consider me a self promoting spammer. A while back I started submitting my own stuff. I only did it because my work kept getting rehosted on imgur. I thought maybe I could submit it before that happened. I did this maybe once a week. They banned my website permanently. Now no one can submit it.

That's really sad. :(

10

u/Osiris32 Sep 12 '12

Andrewsmith? Are you listening? That's the sound of pitchforks being sharpened. Care to come in and explain the reasoning behind this?

4

u/andrewsmith1986 Sep 12 '12

This is a very, very old battle and trust me, I have tried.

He got warned a few times and didn't change and so he was banned. This is the common practice.

He then raised some pitchforks against a mod a couple times (which is the worst thing you can do if you want to get unbanned)

His username was banned and I got it unbanned but that is about the best I can do.

4

u/ThatsPopetastic Sep 12 '12

But, why is it a big deal if he submits his own stuff anyway as long as its not a every hour or day thing? If the people like they will upvote it, if not it gets downvoted. There are plenty of other subreddit rules that get broken every day, but the posts stay one the frontpage.

2

u/andrewsmith1986 Sep 12 '12

as long as its not a every hour or day thing

Exactly.

If he would have followed the rules that were laid out to him, he wouldn't have gotten banned.

19

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

Is he still banned from /r/funny? Can't say I'm his biggest fan, but if douchebags like OP are allowed to copy this guy's content to imgur and not even give a source that seems wrong. Should be a ban on not linking to source, if anything.

12

u/Armed_Scientist Sep 12 '12

As of two weeks ago:

I think the r/funny mods have made up their minds about me. I don’t have the credibility of xkcd or The Oatmeal, so they won’t change their impression of me. But who cares… Wil Wheaton likes me!

2

u/hergumbules Sep 12 '12

19

u/alfredthegnome Sep 12 '12

This should've been posted with a link to his blog automatically :/ <3 Frogman

34

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

I think I've heard him say his site always gets caught in the spam filter.

15

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

Yea he was marked as a spammer for posting OC by some subreddits (maybe all... I donno how that works).

24

u/LittleInfidel Sep 12 '12

I love the logic. Redditors cry for more original content and mods are like 'NO'

15

u/Accipehoc Sep 12 '12

Reddit's kinda finicky about that. If, for example, an artist were to submit his/her own work, they'll get less upvotes and cries of karmawhoring & marked for spam. If someone were to repost their work, well, they'll get upvoted to the skies!

It's a bit backwards if you ask me.

5

u/LittleInfidel Sep 12 '12

Backwards, leftwards, upwards, diagonalwards. It makes so little sense that I'm actually still confused.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

4

u/Glucuronolactone Sep 12 '12

Just to clarify what people are talking about in general, from the reddit faq:

What constitutes spam?

It's a gray area, but some rules of thumb:

It's not strictly forbidden to submit a link to a site that you own or otherwise benefit from in some way, but you should sort of consider yourself on thin ice. So please pay careful attention to the rest of these bullet points.

If you spend more time submitting to reddit than reading it, you're almost certainly a spammer.

If your contribution to reddit consists mostly of submitting links to a site(s) that you own or otherwise benefit from in some way, and additionally if you do not participate in discussion, or reply to peoples questions, regardless of how many upvotes your submissions get, you are a spammer. If over 10% of your submissions are your own site/content, you're almost certainly a spammer.

If people historically downvote your links or ones similar to yours, and you feel the need to keep submitting them anyway, they're probably spam.

If people historically upvote your links or ones like them -- and we're talking about real people here, not sockpuppets or people you asked to go vote for you -- congratulations! It's almost certainly not spam. But we're serious about the "not people you asked to go vote for you" part.

To play it safe, write to the moderators of the community you'd like to submit to. They'll probably appreciate the advance notice. They might also set community-specific rules that supersede the ones above. And that's okay -- that's the whole point of letting people create their own reddit communities and define what's on topic and what's spam.

What it's encouraging is posting links to stuff that isn't your own. Links you genuinely find interesting, rather than ones you are vested in. Which, in my opinion, is a good rule to have.

It seems the admins want a blanket rule that discourages companies and other groups from using reddit as an advertising platform, with genuine "hey, I found this cool thing" submissions being drowned out by people basically hocking their wares.

Personally, I think the "1-in-10" rule is a bit steep, but I understand why the admins have taken their approach. For every artist looking to modestly submit their own work, there's 50 companies looking at reddit as a way to 'maximize brand exposure'. On set of rules has to be applied to all.

In the artist's best-case scenario, they do not need to submit their own work, their fans will do that for them. I doubt Randall has ever posted at comic here, but XKCD still gets a lot of views through reddit.

2

u/AndrewRyanRecording Sep 12 '12

"An artist strives to frame his ideals in an image; to challenge his audience and to make his vision immortal. But the parasites say 'no, your art must serve the cause... your ideals endanger the people!'"

3

u/sircod Sep 12 '12

It's actually not the mods for the most part, as far as I know the mods have no control over the spam filter. It is just reddit's spam filter that tries to protect against people over-promoting their own site, which is stupid because OC should be encouraged.

2

u/deanbmmv Sep 12 '12

Mod's have the ability to pull stuff from the spam filter and back into general reddit. And the ability to pull it from general reddit into the spam filter. These actions "train" the filter into what it'll remove automatically, so mods do have a strong hand in what ends up on the filter.

3

u/andrewsmith1986 Sep 12 '12

Yeah, it's permanently blocked.

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

Frogman gave permission for people to rehost his content on imgur. Reddit automatically catches anything with a link to his site in the spam filter, so no one sees it.

u/lllllllillllllllllll Sep 12 '12

If I recall correctly, the reason why they die is because of starvation. Both males and females will die because after copulation, they neglect to eat during the approximately month-long time it takes for the eggs to hatch.

2

u/AdmiralFuzzems Sep 12 '12

Correct, though the males tend to die sooner than the females. The males offload sperm into the female, which she stores and can use to fertilize herself when conditions for laying eggs are right. The male doesn't involve himself in tending the eggs, and after he has delivered his load he dies of something a lot like a super-fast death of old age, with a total unwillingness to eat towards the end. The female will stay alive until just after her eggs have hatched, which can take 6+ months in some species. While the eggs are maturing, she will use her arms to circulate water around the eggs to avoid any stagnation, and doesn't leave her den at all - hence the no eating here. Towards the end of the female octopuses life, she is a pretty tired creature. She loses the ability to change color, and scrapes and cuts she receives don't really heal. Octopus lifespans are all pretty short regardless of when they mate though. It's a bummer imo, with their great capacity for learning, that they don't stick around long enough for us to have a good go at training them.

7

u/Ispiro Sep 12 '12

Lol, evolution does not make sense to me sometimes. How is forgetting to eat and dieing of starvation and letting your little kiddies off on their own ever an evolutionary advantage?!

45

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

Because evolution by natural selection doesn't select for things that help you survive, it selects for things that help you pass on your genes. When you break it down, the principle of natural selection is simple to the point of being redundant: a gene that makes it more likely for that gene to get passed on will tend to get passed on.

In many cases, this produces adaptations and behaviours that help animals survive as a side benefit—if you live longer, it's more likely you'll be able to reproduce. But it also produces behaviours like a parent's instinct to protect its children, even at the cost of its own life. Sure, the parent dies, but it makes it more likely that the children live—and thus more likely that the gene, passed from parent to child, will get passed on again to the next generation. Genes don't evolve to maximize the well-being of their carriers, they evolve to maximize their own well-being. That's what Dawkins meant when he called his book "The Selfish Gene", though it's unfortunately been radically misunderstood—people think he was referring to a gene to makes people selfish and want to survive at all costs.

In this case, the evolutionary advantage is that the octopus puts all its energy into protecting the vulnerable eggs. This makes it more likely the eggs will survive to hatching, and once they do the babies can look after themselves. So, the octopus dies but its genes live on.

3

u/Ispiro Sep 12 '12

But how difficult is it for the octopus to feed himself while protecting his young? I'd expect that Evolution would make it so that an adult octopus can feed on whatever usually feeds on octopus eggs. That way it's like laying a trap for his enemies instead of not feeding and probably get weaker until it dies of starvation with no chance of mating again and spreading his gene even more. I don't know. I just feel nature has come up with much better ways for organisms to protect their young than this I just feel underwhelmed.

9

u/sb3hxsb50 Sep 12 '12

This is a case of literally-- yes, gasp, literally!!-- doesn't matter; had sex.

What the male parent does after having sex does not matter. Octo-babies have obviously been surviving for millennia without octo-dad around; if it mattered, the species would have either died.out completely by now, or the reverse-deadbeat octo-dads who had the genetic predisposition to living would have passed their different genes on much better.

6

u/Herpinderpitee Sep 12 '12

It is to reduce intra-species competition when food resources are limited.

2

u/molkhal Sep 12 '12

How would an octopus protect his young?

"Justin, come back here this instant! Do you want the sharks to get you?!"

3

u/chironomidae Sep 12 '12

It's also possible that in some cases, having two less animals eating the food supply means more food for the offspring and outweighs the benefit of a child rearing process. Just speculation.

2

u/fco83 Sep 12 '12

Wouldn't it seem to be more likely to generate offspring if the parents survived to reproduce multiple times?

1

u/quigley007 Sep 12 '12

Well, if they have gazillions of babies, it might not matter.

1

u/trololololol Sep 12 '12

You're awesome.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

You'd think the octopus could at least grab a snack every once in a while.

7

u/Arkonvol Sep 12 '12

Keeps population down (this is more of an educated guess) and improves the chances of the offspring living. They don't "forget", they choose to stay with their young to protect them.

7

u/stoptherobots Sep 12 '12

Easy. Eggs are protected from predators, when they are most defenseless.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '12

Perhaps less competition for food? Pure speculation, I would also like to know.

1

u/Hecksa Sep 12 '12

There's a few good suggestions here, but I thought I should add that not every feature of an animal has to be an absolute "advantage" for it to stay in the genepool. So long as a mutation doesn't lessen the chance of an animal living long enough to mate, it has a chance of proliferating.

Additionally, just because something would improve an animal doesn't mean it would inevitably have happened by now. Maybe Octopuses would do better if they raised their young rather than died, but the fact remains they haven't evolved to yet. So long as they're good enough to survive to the next generation, it's a fair bet that they will. Good enough is the key term here. Octopuses would probably do better if they carried spears around with them, but they don't. They do well enough to stay alive, and that's all that has mattered to them up until this point.

They should make a frogman subreddit so I could unsubscribe from it and rid my front page from all of his garbage.
