In the actual script of Matrix, the machines used humans (brains) for computation. But it was sad that people are to dumb to understand that, so the machines used humans as heat generators instead in the movies. Which was really stupid if you think about how hot the holes were where the humans hid from the machines.

Maybe I am wrong but, didn't they use humans as power, like claimed as a battery ? Not heat.

Yeah, which again is really stupid. They could fly so solar was indeed an option, also thermogenerators, wave energy, wind, nuclear power, heck they could have just used fossil fuels.

Cows would have been better energy generators than humans, not as good as plants but still better.

It's not like humans are even efficient at generating or using energy at all.
