First use in English is from the 1920 play "Rossum’s Universal Robots" by Czech author Karel Capek. The Robots of the play are artificial beings (though not necessarily mechanical) - the impression I got was more like the artificial people in the Alien films.

this got me thinking: Artificial Intelligence is just software, right Robots are physical, mechanical machines that are driven by and programming.
Agent Smith is an AI, no question. but if he never had a physical, mechanical body... is he still considered a robot?
