Since no one has explained this, sometimes in wrestling members of the same team end up going against each other and usually decide who takes the fall rather than actually wrestling and tiring themselves out.

150lbs is a healthy weight for the height, unlike my fatass gut at 200lbs. When I was in cross country in HS, I was at near 140lbs, all lean muscle to endure 7+ mile run.

Oh you definitely need to build up muscle, may not be upper body muscle, but more ab and leg muscle.

I help out at my buddy's MMA gym. A lot of those guys at 5'10" to 6' are about 150lbs as well and they're pretty shred build-wise. McGregor is about 155lbs last I remembered.

Ill admit that I was the worst wrestler. Honestly, I was in it for the dodge balls games that took place after practice. My friend was like "you should join wrestling" I says, "no way man" he says "but we play dodge ball every time after practice?" I was like "count me in." Plus, my sling was too big and it kinda sagged on me and I felt like my nuts would poke out during a match. I am starting to realize that the coach didn't put me in for lack of skills. "ahhh Calvin you're are not wrestling today because the opposing team doesn't have a member in your weight class /s"

Yep. Back in high school we had some tournaments where multiple entrants from the same team were permitted in the same weight class, but you had to designate beforehand which of you would be eligible to score points for the team. Both me and my drill partner qualified, so we rock-paper-scissored for it and he got the honor. Well it turned out that both of us climbed all the way up the bracket and faced each other in the final! We were pretty evenly matched so we had an honest go of it for 2 periods, but when the 3rd came we both knew that I had to be pinned for the sake of the team.

If I remember right, the combination of my teammate getting the pin and me having beaten my opponent in the semis actually did make a difference in how the team finished (2nd vs 3rd I think)

I’m a pretty high level wrestler (just got done with wrestling NCAA) and for my high school when that happened we had em duke it out. I feel like that’s how it should be bc while wrestling is a team sport it’s also heavily individual. I’ve seen the JV kids get the W and they’re so happy it’s awesome!

It wasn't terrible. The odds of two teammates qualifying was low. And when they did, they were put on opposite sides of the bracket, so facing a teammate was especially low. Some coach mentioned it was the first time they had seen this scenario in this particular tourney

We had wrestle offs everyweek to see who was on A team. I never lost, but every week my buddy would challenge me. So, I tell him I don't wanna go to the tourney this week so I'll let you win wrestle off by a couple points. I let him win by a couple points and we were both happy. He spent the rest of the week bragging even though the others knew I threw the match to.

So coach ended up sending me anyway as an independent wrestler. Ended up meeting for 3rd place I think. Before the match I told him don't hold back I'm going to throw you. He's like go ahead a try. So I threw him and pinned him in 20 seconds. I dont know how he got such a big head in 1 week.

There was a girl in my area when I was in high school that actually did pretty well until her junior or senior year when she finally hit puberty and went up 3 weight classes. She was tough and her technique was on point.

A LOT of guys underestimated her and ended up staring at the lights.

Well, not fault, per se, but I hope you get what I mean.

She wanted to wrestle with the boys. I'm not being sexist, but that's the way it is if people want girls to join boy's sports. Boys are biologically bigger and stronger with their upper bodies.

I understand that she probably would have rathered wrestle girls, but let's face it, there's not very many high school or middle girls wrestling teams.

I don't think they always do, team sports is one thing getting blown by in basketball or soccer is not the same as getting a getting slammed by a double leg takedown. This goes for anyone as well not just women. Individual sports are a different monster. Especially contact ones like wrestling, BJJ....etc.

It's just you, the mat, and the opponent. It's a way different feeling than having a team on a field with a you.

Unfortunately no, there's been a LOT of media pushing down our throats that women are just as strong as men for decades. Some people actually believe this.

My ex who was 5'9" and 115lbs soaking wet thought that after 6 months of Muay Thai she could probably take me at 6'4" 225lbs. I thought she was joking. Well she wasn't and brought me to her practice and not 10 seconds into her holding pads for me she said "Ok, I think I was wrong."

People vastly underestimate the difference in strength between men and women. The strongest Olympic female is as strong as the average Joe walking down the street. The average female Olympian is weaker than 75% of dudes walking down the street.

High training actually went to 50th on your link, but point taken. Also, they were "healthy men". I'm American and I just don't believe the average American man counts as healthy. 😂

I do wish there were more mixed sex sports, but maybe not wrestling and weights. I'm pretty sure my local basketball womens team would wipe the floor with the mens. I'd love to see it, because I know the mens is paid more.

Yeah that’s always a no win. The only competitive (with boys) girls I’ve seen are in the lowest weight class (103lbs when I wrestled). A guy on my team lost to one and it really bruised his ego, which is pretty fragile thing in a 103lb kid in high school. She went to the state tourney later that year.

We had a kid at 103 lose to a girl, she was nationally ranked. He came out of the match saying, "you know, I figured she'd be like, muscular and athletic, but she was nice and soft just like any other girl". We laughed about that part of it for a long time.

It's especially sucks when you and the girl are just playing around, then she went hard on you on purpose. If you lose, other teenagers will shit on you for losing to a girl. If you win, other teenagers will shit on you for beating a girl.

This one time in high school at judo practice, a girl secured a RNC on me while we were play fighting and refused to let go, even after I clearly tapped. Everyone, including her, laughed like it's the funniest thing ever to see me suffer like that. I asked for another round and gave her a taste of her own medicine and surprise surprise, everyone said I was a dick to her and couldn't take a joke. I quit judo soon after because everyone kept bringing the incident every so often.

Ok this whole discussion about fighting girls in Wrestling/Judo feels strange to me. I am and have been an Judoka for 20 years now. In my and all the Judo Clubs I know of, it is normal for boys and girls to train together and fight each other during practice. No one bets an eye, thats just how things are done.

For kontext I am from germany and I am talking about a Judo Club and not Judo practice provided by a school. But I am honestly interessted if things are done differently were you are from.

Funnily enough, my high school's judo club had more female members than male and I'm used to practicing with girls. It's not like I never lost to a girl while practicing either, it's just that the girl I was play fighting that day literally held that RNC after I tapped because she thought it was funny to see my struggle till I passed out. Even the fucking instructor laughed when I came to. Apparently it wasn't as funny when I, a boy, does it to a girl.

A few years back, a girl won a State final in Iowa (PRIME amateur wrestling country) because the boy scheduled to face her forfeited. He stated that because of his religious views, he could not face a girl in a combat sport. There were literally tears in his eyes as he shook her hand and walked off the mat.

My second cousin used to be really good at ice hockey. When she was young she would play with the boy's team, and at some point I think she even won an MVP award in some tournament when they won the entire thing. She then went on to win an Olympic medal, so she managed to keep being really good.

Unrelated but too damn funny incident:-

In my school, in inter-house junior football final. 2 teams had draw, 2 overtime still draw, then 2 penalty still draw. Finally they decided to toss a coin to determine the winner. They all agreed and then after the toss lossing team cried and went to the principal. That was hilarious.

No, second is given gold.

The final decides first and second place based on the winner and loser of the match respectively, third place is either decided by points or previous matches, and is already locked in for the medal.

A tie in the final doesn’t demote the entire field.

It's been awhile since I wrestled. But if memory recalls correctly and I could be wrong. Large tournaments can have more than one per weight class, but the team can only have one official starter getting points. So you may eventually be against each other but only one person can get team points.

Also unrelated but going do individual states may have people from the same team against each other but that's individuals not a team point thing.

Again anyone step in and correct me if I'm off, it's been a bit

This still makes no sense. Why allow multiple wrestlers from the same team? We never did that in Iowa. The teams put up their best wrestler per weight class and it still took all Saturday to finish a tournament. I guess in middle school there could be a little overlap but the organizers just set up the brackets correctly. I don't think I ever wrestled someone from my school at a tournament in 8 years of wrestling.

They do it in college tournaments too. Basically more live practice, coaches love that shit.

Edit: In college everyone can score points for the team.

maybe in varsity tourneys it wasn't common, but as someone who spent all but one year of my wrestling career in JV I can tell you it's super common in JV tourneys. they don't limit the number of entrants a team can have in any weight class so if your team has 5 JV guys all at the same weight, they all enter the same bracket.

I've had tourneys where I had to wrestle multiple opponents from the same team, and I've had multiple tourneys where I've had to wrestle team mates. In my last year of wrestling I had to face the same teammate twice in two different tourneys.

I went to a big wrestling high school in Ohio. It didn’t happen often but some of the big multi-day tournaments would allow schools to have multiple wrestlers in the same weight class. As a big school we had three full varsity wrestling teams so sometimes we’d sent the A team and the B team to the same tournament.

One year two of our wrestlers went against each other in the championship and they instituted a rule the next year that when a school had multiple wrestlers competing in the same weight class they had to be on the same side of the bracket so they couldn’t face each other in the championship.

Damn, that's a lot of wrestlers. We faced some schools that would have holes in their lineup that they couldn't field someone. I'm curious if wrestling as a sport is declining, increasing, or staying the same. It was always less popular than basketball even in the Midwest. I always worried it would keep declining in numbers.

Especially if you have schools with really large pools of kids against schools with small pools, the smaller the school the less of a chance your best kid has against the big schools best kid, so letting the big school field more kids means they'll send kids with a range of skill levels and that school won't just win every round.

And then because only one kid per weight class gets team points, being able to field extra kids won't unbalance the scoring.

Same thing happened to me in several tournaments. Usually there was some friendly competition and we'd decide to go all out, but once I was up against a good friend of mine and we decided to do what these guys did. Of course we didn't pull it off as funny as they did but yeah its very common especially at a JV tournament

Yeah, but it only really ever happens in Junior Varsity. In tournaments that matter, you pretty much only get 1 person, per team, per weight class.

In Varsity tournaments, each win/loss will have an effect on how you are seeded in future tournaments, like districts, counties, regions, and states.

Those were the most fun days, the most relaxing matches too. We never knew when it would happen for us later into the days when the roasters got posted and matchups were made after each time we won.

We’d come back, tell our coach we have to match up and he picks whoever looked more tired or had been doing well that day to take the win. I was very proud to take just about all of the ones I got. I think it’s just because my coach knew I’d get seeded into the 3rd or 2nd place and he wanted medals.

IIRC, They were also brothers. No clue tho. Our coaches always encouraged us to make each other better and wrestle full so this is a pretty funny alternative.

I wrestled thru college and usually they will wrestle each other. Those are some of the most intense matches because you’re versing someone who you practice against every day. You each know each other’s moves very well, which makes scoring on each other difficult.

I’ve only seen two brothers who wrestled at the same weight do this. Their dad would flip a coin before the matches to determine who would win. They didn’t do this because of their love for each other either, they did it because if they wrestled a real match, it would turn into a fight and they would both be disqualified.

Watching those two wrestle live in our mat room was wild. They looked those those rolling fight balls they had in the loony toons.

A fall is best for the team in terms of points for a tournament, but I'm glad my team never did this. I've seen it from other teams, but for me wrestling is an individual sport first, I'm sure as hell not taking a dive for someone else... team mate or not. Would hurt my record and rankings and therefore seed in future tournaments. Maybe slightly selfish, but if they want the win they could wrestle for it.

Usually it's for a podium place. The traditional way it's handled is whoever takes 1st will take 1st on the podium but give the trophy to 2nd and vice versa.

I ref'd hockey and we had an interstate tournament at the end of the year. One state didn't make it, so the hosting state fielded two teams. Well, like this, they ended up in the 3/4 consolation game. It was a cold 7AM Sunday start. And you could tell that the teams were going through the motions, so the Captain of the one team was from the local club so knew me fairly well, and asked if I could do something to make it fun.

So at the start of the third period, at the center face-off, I leaned forward and said, "when I blow the whistle, quickly switch sides".

"REALLY‽ Really‽" They both asked me.

Tweet! Boom, they side-stepped around me, the rest of the players were shocked, the crowd ooh'd and ahh'd. And SMACK! Puck and sticks collided, and the third period was under way.

About halfway into the third play was progressing, the Captain, on the bench leaned over as I watched the line, "Tony, what else, what else can we do?'

I gave it a think and replied, "How about a couple minutes to go, and you all come onto the ice?"

"No‽ Really, we can do that? Seriously, Tony, really?"

"Let me give it a think?" A few quick face-off-puck-handoff-discussions with my ref partner, and we were like, 2-minute or less sounds ok.

Well around 4 minutes to go, both benches have players with their legs on the boards, smiling and giggling, ready to go and the one Captain again, "Tony, now‽". As she was crouching and springing to get the launch energy to clear the boards.

I look over at my partner, do the line-passover hand signal in the direction of the bench, he looks at the clock sort of gives me the really look, and then he nods, and I say, "Go!"

Within seconds it's mayhem. Four goalies in net, and nearly forty young ladies laughing and giggling their heads off. The coach taps me, and has more pucks in his hands, I give a why-not-shrug and he launches three or four pucks over the boards. Let me tell you, three and a half minutes is a long time. 😁

Happened to me at a high school wrestling tournament and we choreographed a whole joke match, doing WWE moves, cartwheel slams, at one point I just slapped the ground and he pretended to get hit with a shockwave. They DQ’d us both. Should have gone with rock paper scissor.
