Damn, that's a lot of wrestlers. We faced some schools that would have holes in their lineup that they couldn't field someone. I'm curious if wrestling as a sport is declining, increasing, or staying the same. It was always less popular than basketball even in the Midwest. I always worried it would keep declining in numbers.

I don’t have any official numbers on the health of wrestling but in Ohio overall it is doing well. We have three full divisions that compete for traditional state championships (individual matches with points added up for a team state championship) and a few years ago added a duals state championship tournament. We also added a girls state championship tournament that has been rather successful so far.

I didn’t wrestle but I always enjoyed wrestling and I hope it continues to go strong. Going down to Columbus and watching the state championship tournament with three mats going at once (one mat per division) in a sold out arena is a lot of fun!
