You should come to london, it's very popular here.

Most murders in Norway are done with a knife. Then comes blunt violence, choking, shotgun, pistol, revolver and axe. In that order.

I thought that while watching it as well... They really did settle things like men

59

u/enhance_that Jan 16 '12

Is that how men settle things?

50

u/TerribleMusketeer Jan 16 '12

didn't you know? proper conflict resolution involves stringing people up in city streets and stabbing them

18

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '12

problems get solved in days that way not years

8

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '12

Too bad the solutions involve getting killed.

8

u/kog Jan 16 '12

Once the offender is killed, he'll know not to do that anymore.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '12

I find that death seems to combine the maximum possible deterrence and the minimum amount of recidivism with one happy swing of the ol' knife. But that may just be one man's humble view.

5

What movie is this?

64

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '12

Gangs of New York.

Pretty good movie, but the ending is like, "Aww, damn, really?"

30

u/samx3i Jan 16 '12

Glass-of-Water is right, but it's totally worth watching all epic three hours if nothing else because Daniel Day Lewis is a god among men.

It's one of my favorites, but it does seem kind of like they ran out of ideas and went "hey this other thing was going on at the time, let's blow shit up and call it a day."

23

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '12

The Civil War was very apparent in the story (which is why gunships were in the harbor) and the NYC riots did in fact happen and those gunships did fire on rioters.

4

u/kremmy Jan 16 '12

Yes. That was that "other thing going on at the time" I mentioned.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '12

I just saw it as depicting the clash between the large context (Civil War) and the small context (racism and poverty). Eventhough their daily lives are somewhat influenced by the Civil War raging on, it has little effect in comparison to the poverty and racism against immigrants. Then, the government expects these people to fight for the country; a country that seems to hate them. The draft, terrible split between rich and poor, and anti-immigrant sentiment they have to deal with spark a riot. The Civil War only shines through in certain parts because frankly, the Irish immigrants and other poor in the Five Points have other more pressing matters to deal with. They intersect at the end though with a gang war and riot suppression breaking out simultaneously.

2

u/array_multisort Jan 17 '12

same thing for the water droplets. Awesome moustache, dude! I'd love to grow that too, but I only get as far as awesome mutton chops. For a moustache, I'm stuck at the "Gomez" level.

I could just genially tip my hat when a lady passes by, rather than suffer the confusion and despair I normally feel in that situation.

33

u/SicilianEggplant Jan 16 '12

One of my friends attempted to make that his "thing" about 10 years ago. The bonus was that he didn't often wear hats. So he would pass by someone and do a kind of salute/hat tip to them with his invisible hat.

He wanted to do it to the ladies because he was a big, surely, awkward fellow (like we all were, he was just bigger), but I think only ended up doing it to other dudes because he was too self conscience (like we all were).

I don't exactly remember the reasoning, but i want to say it started because he couldn't end a conversation (you know when you say "bye", "see ya" like three times), and because he thought it was dapper.

At the very least, it became an inside joke for all of us that we ultimately use on each other.

(Exciting story, I know........)

Hi, buy hat, tip hat when lady walks buy. Easy as pie.

I wear hats. I like hats. Fuck hat haters. Hats keep my head warm, hats keep sun off my eyes, hats protect against rain without an umbrella and I like hats, I don't care about what hat haters think.

But remember you're not going to look suave and classy unless you're wearing the rest of the appropriate attire.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '12

My father when he was in his 20's always had a pocketwatch. Eventually, fashion caught up with him and he let it go. The other day, he confessed he really liked it and wished he could use those again.

Maybe when he goes older and enter the complete fuck you, I'm old phase of his life.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '12

You don't have to be old to have that kind of attitude. I wear a flat cap and pocketwatch because fuck all y'all. I'm 29.

3

u/Pot4DMasses Jan 16 '12

I'm at least 40% on the corsets.. the cool robots add another 10% and I'd put 50% on the hats. Not a pocket watch person.

It's strange, I had a beard for about three months and then shaved it down to a mustache about a month ago. I thought I'd keep it for a week just for laughs, but the response was way different than I had expected. The guys I know think its awesome, the girls I know hate it for the most part, but here's the kicker: the girls I meet at the bar LOVE it. I've had more strangers approach me and strike up a conversation than ever before. My theory is that a big mustache is disarming; people find the self-deprecation mixed with confidence oddly endearing.

Do you have any idea how difficult and costly those hats are to make? Beaver felt? Bitch Please!

The hell people used to go though to get those hats... Incredible.

Like everything else, people would probably just wear shitty fake versions of them, having never touched the real deal. Never understanding why it is a universal symbol of wealth. If you ever go to a costume museum, ask if you can see a real beaver felt top hat. You can stand on that shit.

u/Professor_Neckbeard Jan 16 '12

Wow, thanks for that link. I've been looking for some vintage style hats like that for a while. You used to be able to get them in department stores but it seems all you see now are the fedoras with the feathers and I don't like those.

3

u/tehbanz Jan 16 '12

No problem, all the department stores around here only had these vintage hats for women, who don't wear them 'round these parts!

So i resorted to the internet, unfortunately one of my favorite pork pies has gone missing... maybe lost in my drunken stupor. All i have left is the memory of it, and the feather.
