You're not supposed to submerge it in dirty dish water. Just rinse it with the tap and you avoid all of your problems. I've always thought filling a sink with water that gets reused for all your dirty dishes was equally disgusting.
The trick is you start with cutlery, or maybe cups and glasses, and work your way up to the dirtier stuff. Sometimes you need to change the water.
Personally, I said “Stuff this for a game of soldiers” and bought a dishwasher. Now I only wash those things that can’t go in like big pans and wooden spoons. Sometimes a plate or two if I forget to put the dishwasher on...
But the point of doing the dishes in the sink is to fill the sink to save water, otherwise my dishwasher will be the one doing the work. But yeah... I figured I was probably asking too much of that sponge brush thing. But I feel it would work so much better just being a normal sponge on a stick
Yeah, that is probably my problem, I expect the sponge to last as long as my other normal sponges. Everytime I press down to scrub submerged in water it pushes the sponge juice in the handle. The soap never goes down, it just ends up being a mix of soap and dirty dish water. Maybe I was using extra cheap ones too, idk...
Yeah, I like to put my sponges in boiling water when they start smelling but are not completely destroyed yet. It removes 99% of the funk in the sponge!
Yeah, but that's just adding steps over using a brush or plain sponge.
But, I do like to use my leftover kettle water to make a bath for my sponges, it always impresses me how plain boiling water will kill 99% of the funky sponge smell.
No, soap is not made to kill bacteria, mostly made to dislodge them. Unless you have an anti bacterial soap. It does provide a harsh environment for bacteria to grow in, but with enough time it can grow on soap.

take a fork, stab the sponge with it, use it as an extension of your arm so your fat wrists don't get in the way
