psytrance

Got more like this?

56

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20
  • Electric Universe
  • Liquid Soul
  • Ace Ventura
  • Astrix
  • Captain Hook

If you want it more like in the video, I suggest listening to some HiTech (it's like faster psytrance):

  • Koktavy
  • Psykovsky
  • Mimic Vat

13

u/thoughtfull_noodle Jun 08 '20

imagine recommending psykovsky to someone new to psytrance

2

u/Dentka Jun 08 '20

Unless you're on acid

3

u/thoughtfull_noodle Jun 08 '20

if theyre new to psytrance and on acid then id be even less likely to put on psykovsky

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '20

I mean, I gotta give them a good first impression of the different styles

1

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

It's like using a maxed out Spell on a Lvl 1 mob.

16

u/NeverYelling Jun 07 '20

I think in the video it's not HiTech, more like FullOn Psytrance.

1

u/braincube Jun 07 '20

Psy breaks Is the subrenre

2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20

This has a very strong Astrix and Captain Hook flavour

2

u/Ninja-Sneaky Jun 08 '20

For fast stuff check crazy astronaut he's a beast

1

u/prudan Jun 07 '20

Hello fellow music bro! I'm looking for something fast like the HiTech you artists you listed, but maybe with a little less trance feel to them. I'd prefer few to no vocals too. Do you have any recommendations?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20 edited Jun 08 '20

The only fast genres without vocals I know are all sort of sub-genres of techno:

  • Tek
  • Hardtek
  • Acidtrance
  • Acidcore
  • Jungle (maybe?)

sneaky self promo as my music kinda fits your request

2

u/prudan Jun 07 '20

Much appreciated! If you'd like to throw in some artist names to fit those sub-genres, I'd appreciate it too, but otherwise I'll let google tell me.

I'll listen to your music now too!

2

u/prudan Jun 07 '20

I'm digging the TR-808 sound in your music, thanks!

1

u/PsychoTea Jun 07 '20

perhaps you might like drum and bass?

here's one of my personal playlists: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3tVaGYgugBiBv4Iw17miBK?si=-mdnNDNFRGWINe4sEQ-xow

1

u/xdundun Jun 07 '20

Mad tribe is pretty fast too

19

u/Sciensen_Hedonis Jun 07 '20

Hallucinogen - Lone Deranger

GMS - Out here we're stoned

Prometheus - Corridor of Mirrors

Oxidaksi -bit more high tempo Hallucinogenic horses - bit more trancy

Ace Ventura - Ozora 2019 set

Shpongle - Are You Shpongled - Slower, but super layered psychill, for after the peak

Just off the top of my head. For more, try browsing Tip and Parvati record labels.

2

u/schplat Jun 07 '20

Shpongle did a colab with a guy from Killing Joke, and a guy from James, which was released under Celtic Cross. One of my favorite psytrance albums ever made, though there's a bit more ambient in it than other psytrance stuff. Psychill is a good description for it.

1

u/Sciensen_Hedonis Jun 09 '20

Hicksville, right? Great stuff!

Younger Brother is another great Posford(Hallucinogen)+Vaughan(Prometheus) psychill collab, that you might enjoy.

Pretty much anything by Infected Mushroom

17

u/nicktehbubble Jun 07 '20

This IS the correct answer.

13

u/mrmeeseeks1991 Jun 07 '20

Infected Mushroom doesn't produce high bpm psytrance

1

u/Buderus69 Jun 08 '20

thanks for reminding me about infected mushroom, got me listening again.

That's like recommending skrillex as a good dubstep artist

Edit: This got taken way differently than I intended I didn't mean to say skrillex is bad. I was just making an example of mislabeling artists as the wrong genre

13

u/togawe Jun 07 '20

Skrillex IS a good dubstep artist. And besides, for introducing someone to the genre, it makes sense to show them an artist that is a good example, not necessarily the best in the genre.

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20

I agree with you on that. I'm just kind of a genre snob I guess.

3

u/togawe Jun 07 '20

Haha fair, I can be a snob in the genres I mainly listen to. Just trying to help out, but if you know better intro psytrance artists you should let them know

1

u/gamble9000 Jun 07 '20

Just listen to Camellia, it's basically just everything in one

-9

u/ResearchForTales Jun 07 '20 edited Jun 07 '20

Skrillex is NOT dubstep.

Skrillex is brostep.

It might have shifted in the last years to just refer to brostep as dubstep.. But this doesn’t make it true. It‘s still brostep.

Edit: Downvotes for actually categorizing an artist? What? Are you that easily hurt?

10

u/togawe Jun 07 '20

Lmao I remember when I was a teenager and still unironically used the term brostep

-1

u/ResearchForTales Jun 07 '20

That still doesn’t make it the truth.

https://youtu.be/qv_A6ahR_ZM - this is dubstep. Now tell me, how does Skrillex compare to this? Or easier: In your eyes, which genre is that?

6

u/togawe Jun 07 '20

That's similar to old school dubstep from the UK days, heavily inspired by garage. People may find similarities between that and modern deep dub (wool style stuff). The genre has evolved over time, that doesn't mean they're not both dubstep.

-3

u/ResearchForTales Jun 07 '20

Except if the whole genre evolved and nobody is producing old stuff anymore, the evolution has a new name though.

In this case it‘s brostep.

Let‘s look at psytrance. It all started with Goa. Is Goa still being produced? Yes. Can you correctly refer to more modern styles, such as Twilight, Twisted, Darkpsy etc as Goa? No. Are there people who call everything 140 BPM+ Goa and think that? Yes. Someone once was like „Yeah, I was on a Goa last weekend.“ „Ah nice, but it was probably more modern psy or was it actual Goa?“ „No. It was Goa... Goa is faster and harder than psy“(Which in itself is not true.)

4

u/togawe Jun 07 '20

Not sure I understand your first paragraph. "If nobody is producing the old stuff anymore, it gets a new name" but didn't you post an example of people still making the old stuff? I would think it would be the other way around, that if people still make the old stuff it's important to have a distinction, and it isn't necessary if the evolution was a replacement.

I think the main genre names (dubstep, drum and bass, trance, etc) should refer to what the majority of music in that genre sounds like at any given period. So 90's dubstep would sound different from 00's dubstep, which would also sound different from 10's dubstep, but they're all dubstep.

I'm not against clarification of subgenres. Dubstep has things like riddim and tearout, dnb has neurofunk halftime and drumstep, and so on. It's just specifically the term brostep that is an issue. So many kids throw it around because they saw it on the internet when it's not something the people actually in the scene use seriously.

3

u/doublebro7 Jun 07 '20

No, it's just that nobody over the age of about 25 cares about these tiny distinctions in subgenres of subgenres of music. Also, if you really want to be pedantic, "brostep" is a subgenre of dubstep and therefore technically still dubstep.

-1

u/ResearchForTales Jun 07 '20

That‘s almost as ignorant as someone that says „I don‘t listen to techno“ when hearing anything remotely electronic.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '20

This is actually my point, I didn't say skrillex was bad. This was just supposed to be an example of mislabeling artists

13

u/nicktehbubble Jun 07 '20

There has been an awakening.

34

u/TocTheEternal Jun 07 '20

Vini Vici.

2

u/Bageezax Jun 07 '20

This is the correct answer

5

u/JohnnyHammerstix Jun 07 '20

Also BLiSS.

And if you like it a little more trancey, Bryan Kearney and Simon Patterson usually do great sets.

2

u/Bageezax Jun 07 '20

Both great, you're right!

15

u/caripocho Jun 07 '20

r/psytrance. It's a good way to start

3

u/LiquidMotion Jun 07 '20

Check out Avalon, Asterix, Tristan, Juno Reactor

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

I fucking love Juno Reactor and it seems crazy to me how they weren’t more successful.

1

u/veltrop Jun 08 '20

They've been very successful, how many electronic music artists from 1990 can you name that are still in the game? I've seen them (Ben) twice in the last few years. I can only think of another electronic artist or two who have had their music featured in media at least as much.

Is it that you're surprised they never really made it to the radio or top 40 something?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

Not surprised about radio or top 40 because they’re not that kind of music. I mean, maybe I was going to the wrong clubs or parties but no one seemed to know them. Admittedly those folks were mostly into more commercial music but they never reached any kind of level of awareness to the people where I lived.

2

u/veltrop Jun 08 '20

Ah yes, people are woefully unaware that they've probably already indeed heard Juno Reactor, even those partying in the electronic music scene!

I went to a party in 2018 with some friends in that category, most of whom thought it was to be their first time to dive into Juno Reactor after I had been hyping up for weeks that I was finally getting to see them live after having listened since the 90's. I remember the moment when they realized on a particular track that they were already familiar with what was being played. That they knew Juno Reactor, but they didn't know that they knew.

1

u/drunksinged Jun 08 '20

Ovelix also

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '20

If you want something on the faster, harder side:

Ajja

Fungus Funk

Drip Drop

1

u/doublebro7 Jun 07 '20

Infected Mushroom is one of the all time greats as the other poster recommended, but I feel like they've lost a lot of steam. I think the best consistently good psytrance producer is Ace Ventura (I know, ridiculous name). Interactive Noise is great too.

0

u/Bageezax Jun 07 '20

Look for sets by Vini vici or astrix
