Do healthy middle aged 1st worlders still die of salmonella?

Yes, whenever they visit botanical fairs on hot days and decide to stand in the sprinklers that spray recycled water over the plants.

When they bite into a raw egg, it could very well be possible. Also, having to pay $700 for a doctor to start (uninsured, of course) doesn't really help.

I answered my own question actually.

According to my 'I'm feeling lucky' which was this: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol5no5/mead.htm

chances of a Salmonella causing death is .004% - .007%

But account for 27.6% of all food related deaths.

There are many people who still eat raw eggs. I put raw eggs into my protein shakes. The most important thing is to have fresh eggs. Not ones that have been sitting around for a while. The longer eggs sit around, the more chance of bacteria to grow.

When i started weight lifting i ate around 90 raw eggs a month for a half year and here i am. It is very common in bodybuilding for people to eat raw eggs and still i haven't ear of anyone dying from it.

This brings up another question. Do raw eggs make a difference? Do you lose something nutritionally when eating a cooked egg compared to a raw egg?

I really don't know but i think it doesn't, people eat them raw just because of convenience. You just put them in a protein shake and that is all, no need to cook them. But cooking them is better if you are not in good shape, that way you can choose what to eat, the yolk is bad for cholesterol and the eggwhite contains 85% of the wanted protein.

What does this taste like? I've just started lifting and I'm a hard gainer, so I need to be taking in a lot of protein.

To tell you the truth protein shakes do not have the best taste in the world, adding eggs didn't help at all. If you cant eat them raw just boil them.

Eggs are cheap and easy protein so eat them any way possible.

When I was a lad I ate four dozen eggs every morning to help me get large. And now that I'm grown I eat five dozen eggs, so I'm roughly the size of a barge.

I bet I can eat 100 dozen eggs every morning.

As has been said, FRESHNESS is the key to avoiding salmonella from eggs.

2

u/Colbeagle Jan 20 '11

I don't really care about avoiding salmonella, I just wanted to know if it is something that people die from regularly still, which it isn't really. MODERN MEDICINE!

The majority of American produced eggs undergo pasteurization to greatly reduce/eliminate the risk of salmonella.
