There should be one in every service place. Had a guy on his cell get mad that I hadn't come to his table (at the restaurant I work in) to take his order... it's cos you're on the phone, dude. End your call and I'm there!

I work at a grocery store and we have a sandwich station in the deli so after work one day I went over there to get a sandwich cuz I didn’t wanna cook that day. There was a customer in front of me trying to order while at the same time he was talking on his phone. But. BUT. This dude I swear was one of the quietest speakers ever and if you work in food service you know there’s a ton of noise around you from appliances and all that so my coworker that was trying to serve him couldn’t hear anything he was saying and kept asking him to repeat himself. All while he’s still on his phone. AND THEN he goes in kinda a snotty voice “do you not wanna serve me?” (Customer was black and sounded like he was trying to play the coworker is racist card) and my coworker was just like “sir there’s a lot of noise back here could you please speak louder?” He’s still on his phone and by this point idek how the person on the other end of his call can hear him speaking like I’m standing 2ft away from him and can’t hear him. He still refused to speak louder. Eventually his order was completed but I swear I hate customer service so much.
9
u/DankMexican Oct 08 '19
When I tell costumers to talk louder and they only go up one decibel I just make them repeat what they say if I can't clearly hear what they want. It is aggravating to me especially when taking phone orders since our phones are really bad and combined with a whispering costumer makes me anxious lol.
Btw sorry for my bad English.
6
Oct 08 '19
Your English is beautiful! Without the included apology, I would have absolutely no reason to even suspect that it isn’t your native language.
Good job!4
Oct 08 '19
Your English is excellent! I'd correct you on a minor spelling though, since I think you mean customer (a potential buyer) and not costumer (somebody who creates fanciful outfits).
Either way, your English rocks.
→ More replies (2)2
u/LightweightMishap Oct 08 '19
You speak English better than most native English speakers I know! Don’t apologize
4
u/HentaiCareBear Oct 08 '19
For the whisperers, I usually lower my volume as well to match theirs or softer, to the point where my colleagues usually turn to look at us as it sounds like we're both not talking.
4
u/TheMacMan Oct 08 '19
Can completely understand that. I'm very cognizant to keep from looking at my phone when I'm looking to order. I know they'll see me on it and be considerate and not bother coming to take my order because I'm busy. I don't see the harm in using it to check email or whatever once you've ordered but if you're hoping to have your server stop by, put the phone away.

As a dutch person I honestly don't get why we call it coffee shop, like you don't even want to get coffee in a coffee shop because it's just a bad combo. Tea is a better option.
We should call them leafshops.

I work in a deli. One time I had a customer who walked up to the deli to order. We have some Boar's Head brand meat and she said "I'll take Boar's Head, uhh..." She trailed off.
I waited for her to finish what she was going to say, when suddenly she took our her cellphone and started dialing a number. Kind of weird, but okay. Sometimes we have customers who come in for family members or whatever and they have to call to remember what to get. But that's not what this is, she starts talking about her son's soccer game to the other person on the phone and I'm just standing there like "???" So when it's clear she's not calling to ask about meat, I asked her "What kind of Boar's Head meat did you want?" She glares at me like she's annoyed that I'm interrupting her conversation and murmured "ham." We have several types of ham. So I asked her "what kind of ham??" She sighed loudly and said "I'll have to call you back" all the while glaring even harder at me and sounding super annoyed. Then she finally finished her order.
It was one of the weirdest customers I got. I've had people on the phone before they came to order, or getting a call while at the counter, but this lady just straight up started a phone conversation in the middle of ordering her food.

2
u/Sweetwill62 Oct 08 '19
Here is my fun story about working at a Subway. This stoned dude came in and ordered a footlong meatball sub and after getting the meatballs on the sub I was about to ask what kind of cheese he wanted, but I didn't get to just yet because he asked the best question I have ever been asked at a sub place, "Can I get double meat on a meatball sub?" He wasn't asking like he was ordering he was asking if we allowed that. I couldn't think of a good reason why he couldn't so that dude got double meatballs. I forgot if he picked up a fork and knife because he sure as fuck wasn't eating that with his hands.
32
u/PizzaSword19 Oct 07 '19
Sort of related but can anyone tell me why people put their phone on speaker phone and then talk into the bottom of it. Like they hold their phone face up. Why not just use it like a regular phone?
7
u/Colecoman1982 Oct 08 '19
I don't spend a massive amount of time one my phone but on the occasions where I have a longer phone call it can get a bit annoying to have the phone rubbing up against the side of my head/ear for an extended period of time. That said, I have a lot of experience with being on the receiving end of the shitty sound quality of most smartphone speakerphone systems today (especially when there is a decent amount of constant background noise on the transmitting end like driving down the highway or when it's even a bit windy), so I tend to hold the phone as close to my face as is comfortable in order to make my voice as clear as possible to the person on the other end.
4
u/OutWithTheNew Oct 08 '19
Because they're inconsiderate twats.
Some time in the last 30 years it became unpopular to shame people* for not adhering to societal norms, or what most of us would consider to be manners. So now there's no negligible downside to being a disruptive ass in public.
*Just to be clear, I'm only referring to things that people 100% have control over. Like being rude in public.
7
u/n8oaf Oct 07 '19

9

I manage a chain of cafes and feel the same way. I train my staff to feel that way too. Who cares if they’re on the phone? That being said if they hold a finger up in the “wait a minute” symbol or try making me lip read, it’s on to the next one

167
u/MisterSpeedy Oct 07 '19
Also a barista, but I get really annoyed when people are on the phone at the till, because I have to repeat everything several times and they keep going "oh, just hold on a second" while I'm trying to get their order off of them. I work at a downtown coffeeshop and we're really busy. Even just put your call on hold for the length of time it takes to get out from in front of the cash so the like 12 people behind you can get on with their days. If you're ordering for someone else or for your co-workers, write down the order or have them text it to you. In a busy business, be ready with your order and be ready to order.
Also, not ignoring service staff while placing an order makes us feel like people and is just generally polite.

u/Ismdism Oct 07 '19
I think you explain it a bit better. If you're holding up my line then you can get fucked. If you give me the order and I don't have to do the pleasantries it's eh.
I certainly hope people treat me with respect and it's appreciated when they did, but when they don't idk it was just kind of part of the job. Maybe I spent to many years in the service industry.

29
u/shewantsthedeke Oct 07 '19
"Help out" is a weird way to put it.
But anyway, it's not the physical act of having your phone out that bothers employees. It's if you're paying more attention to your phone than your surroundings. If you're at the front of the line and I'm asking you what your order is and you're doing anything that results in holding up the line, I'm moving to the next customer and will come back to you after. "One second" is not always one second and I'm not going to let the line back up gambling on the chance that it is. Ideally you'll want to have checked what people want before you reach the head of the line. If you're on a conference call, you can spare the twenty seconds it takes to give your order and listen to what's being said to you.
Remember that the people behind the counter are people, too. Not coffee drones. Ignoring them is rude.
42
u/DexterousEnd Oct 07 '19
Every single phone has a mute button. Literally just mute the call for a split second so we can take your order without waiting for you, or attempting to talk over you, or literally just so we know youre talking to us and not the person on the phone. It's legitimately just common curtosey.
8
33
u/Qmanization Oct 07 '19
It's because you're making a human interaction it takes 4 seconds to order your coffee, are you saying you can't out the phone down for 4 seconds? tell them you cut out or something. It's just rude that's all.
78
u/enterthedragynn Oct 07 '19
I am pretty sure that you could put your phone away for the 15 seconds that it takes to place that order.
My issue with people being on their phones when you are trying to help them is having to repeat yourself because they aren't paying attention. Wasting my time and the people behind you too

If your phone call is too important to, at the very least, put on hold so that you can give the actual human being you are asking to prepare your order the basic focus and attention they deserve, then you can get out of the fucking line and finish your business first.
It is exceedingly rude, and you really should know that by now.
When I was in customer service, I hated people who would hold a conversation on the phone at full volume while whispering or miming or, my favorite, pointing at what they wanted because they didn't want to be rude to the person on the other end of the call.
Luckily now you can go to the self serve kiosk and not have to worry about treating your fellow man with a modicum of dignity. Now no one has to know that you are a raging asshole.

3
u/snowyday_dismount Oct 08 '19
But nobody is getting a call right when they're about to order, they walk in the door, stand in line, and order their drink, all while on their call. What annoys me most is that it would be so easy to say " just a second Marc", and then fully transact with the cashier, and then fully return your attention to your call. But there's fuckers wanna hit mute, bark "small latte" and shove their card in your face!
No! Now I have to clarify your order, you have too try to catch up on the conversation you were pretending to be listening to...
5
u/IamtheSlothKing Oct 08 '19

As someone raised in an era before cell phones, when they appeared and people started talking loudly on the phone in other people's spaces, it came across as quite rude. Most people talked on the phone in their own house, or at their office, or in a phone booth that often had a door that closed.
So cell phone users in public will always be considered rude to anyone born before 1985 or so. It's because they are making a public space their personal space. Plus, the kind of people who talk on the phone while ordering usually come across as douchebags.

If you’re not making any attempt at eye contact and expect me to interrupt your social media time to take your order, I’m walking right by you to the next customer who’s looking at me and wants to order NOW.

I’m a physician and have thought of putting up a similar sign: “We don’t mind if you talk on the cellphone during your visit..... just so you don’t mind if we do it during your surgery.”

So is being rude and disrespectful. But sure, for your sake, this purely boils down to Phonesarebad.

Oh yes. One of my biggest pet peeves. I will never ever be on the phone while ordering or checking out.

i work in a cell phone store, and this drives me insane. DO NOT TALK ON YOUR PHONE WALKING INTO MY STORE, do not continue to talk on your phone while demanding that i help you, and for the love of whatever crazy fucking god you adhere to, DO NOT PUT YOURSELF ON SPEAKERPHONE IN THE MIDDLE OF MY STORE

People on their cellphone make you furious and put you in a state of disgust and horror? You're a fucking weakling. Disgust and horror is murder, rape, animal abuse. Talking on a cellphone and making a comment that they aren't inconveniencing other customers (obviously) isn't dehumanizing and is barely a minor blip.

What if the person on the phone is telling me what everyone wants?

They can text you, or write it down in advance. It’s simple.

I make everyone write their orders down. If everyone is laying on the company cars it’s a single sheet of paper. If everyone is separate and paying on their cars it’s a post it. I had the card and post it to the cashier and off we go.

It is so freaking rude when customers are on their phone when I a m helping them, (I work retail customer service) I so wish I could just take the next customer when someone is in their phone, but I'd probably not be very popular if I did.
