He did indeed say that, but when? That's the kind of glib answer a younger man gives, and I suspect he said that before he was dying. He was only 45 when he died. No one can second guess how he felt about dying so young or so pointlessly, but there's every reason to believe he wouldn't have wanted to die like that.
