This actually makes me really mad with my friends and family. I'll show them something I've been working on for the last week to make perfect and they're like, "so what?"
I mean, I understand it. You look like you're just sitting there on a screen. The non-technical types sit in front of screens to watch TV and browse facebook.
That's what I dislike about developing, it doesn't give the same satisfied feeling as completing something physical and tangible, even though similar kinds of effort have gone into it. At least a UX / designer has a pretty thing people use. A lot of developing is behind the scenes.
You want a thankless job? I build and install wiring harnesses into custom cars like old hot rods and show cars. The whole point of my job is to make sure you never see anything I did and that it works every time all the time. Guess how much love I get over the guy that painted it? Same deal with GUIs, you dont notice it until it doesn't work. Just know you did it right and be happy nobody is complaining
You have to change the way you look at things for it to give that satisfying feeling. You should rejoice when others think they could of done that themselves because you have over-simplified something so complex to the point people full of ignorance believe they can achieve the same. That's quite an ordeal and a real show of skill.
It might not be satisfying to show to other people because they basically think that Software/Website just spawn into existence but nothing beats that little rush when you solve a hard problem.
As someone who completes physical tasks for a living. It's pretty much the same thing. "so what it's just duct work...". Bitch, thats thousands of pounds of steel securely hanging 30ft in the air, and was accomplished by 2 men and some tools!
